Slight Forum Sub-Section Re-Naming

Post by VegettoEX » Wed Dec 15, 2010 1:54 pm

Hey, all:

It certainly isn't a "problem", but I was curious as to what a self-selected, general consensus may be for slightly re-naming two of the "DragonBall" section's sub-topics here on our forum. We currently have:
  • General Discussion
General discussion regarding all three TV series (DragonBall, DragonBall Z, DragonBall GT) and manga, movies, merchandise, fan culture, and more.
  • DragonBall Questions?
Have a (generally in-universe) DB-related question you just can't find the answer to? The staff and your fellow fans will do their best to get you the answers you need.
To more efficiently separate the "meta" stuff from the "in-universe" stuff, I was considering adjusting it to something along the following lines:
  • General & Meta Discussion
Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.
  • In-Universe Discussion
Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, back-history, universe, and more.
Some types of discussions don't PERFECTLY fit into either category, and I don't really have too much of a problem with someone just picking a category to go with in that case. In other areas, I'd like to more clearly differentiate the types of discussions taking place into these "meta" and "in-universe" categories (which is really just a more-clearly-written explanation of what already exists, so it's not like we'd really be doing anything "new").

Thoughts?

It sounds like a good idea to me. I think seperating in-universe discussion from production discussion will clear up a lot of either of the current two forums and allow more focus for both. I've certainly become more interested in the production of comic and animation over the years and having a solid "You can ask this sort of thing here" sign would probably help generate more interest.

The only thing I could becoming a little troublesome is the subject of the multiple dubs and translations and how/where those would fit in. Then again, the real focus of the site and forum have never been on any of those, has it? Tricky...

Well, being that the website's focus (and by extension, the forum's focus) is on the original Japanese version, and as the original Japanese version acts as the single global and consistent version of the franchise to use with regard to in-universe discussions... not much of an issue there.

Dubs fall under the category of "meta", so unless misinformation relating to in-universe material is brought up... well, even if it IS brought up... I don't see too much of an issue with classification. If someone asks for information on how Bardock became a scientist, it usually only takes one post to clear that up, and it doesn't translate into much of a mess for thread classification since it'll just fall into the ether of past pages.

Like I said, it's not really a "change" in the way anything's set up at all -- it's just more of a clearly-noted description of what's already happening.

Sounds good to me. That's the direction those two particular subforums have gone in for a long time now, anyway. Seems appropriate.

Seems like a good idea. I can't think of a downside to this. It would only help categorize discussions better.

No problems here. The proposed new names would fit the sub-sections' topics well.
On hiatus.

Yes! Most of the Dragon Bal question threads that aren't answered in a post or two aren't really questions anyway, and are just phrased that way. Change away, Mr. Mike!

I'm in favor of it, though I don't think most people will know exactly what "Meta" means in the context of general franchise discussion. Are there any better words that can be chosen, or is that really the most appropriate?

Perhaps we just keep it "General Franchise Discussion" and take out the extra word?

I was kinda hoping for / expecting more feedback on it. I don't know if people just don't care, think it's fine and just have nothing to contribute...?

I'm against all forms of change! ...But no, yeah, I think it's fine and have nothing to contribute.

I do wonder if Tweaker's right about the word "meta", but there's an explanation of the forum right underneath it, so it shouldn't be confusing.

I too am fine with the change, I think it will make it easier to know where to post certain topics. But other than that I have nothing to contribute.

I've always thought the General/Questions seperation seemed a little arbitrary, so I'm in favour of the change.

I like it; it clears things up on what to expect. Actually looking at it, and taking reoccuring threads into account, the line was blurry. I say aye.

I'm not going to bother saying what everyone else has said, but I'm in support of the slight forum sub-section re-naming. Come on! What are you waiting for?! Do it now!

I wholeheartedly endorse this change.

Not that it will really affect me, but it will help new members having things labelled more clearly.

The idea of changing something I'm so used to is unpleasant, but there's no reason not to. The distinction works pretty well, and would be a helpful organizational tool.

I suppose I might complain more if I could still use the first letters in the forum jump, but since all the sub-sections were indented at the upgrade, I don't do that anymore... so I have no real complaints. ^^

I have been on my Christmas holidays for a couple of days, so I'll give my five cents.
I think that renaming the sections would be a good idea, and it would be a bit easier to find certain threads if you are interested in a particular subject.
Some people like discussing the story more, and some others like to discuss the merchandise more, and some both sections.
And changing the names would get us rid of the "wait, how is this a question?!" problem. :P
