FUNimation and Toei announce online streaming of DBZ!

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I'm saying I don't understand why you're getting worked up over dumb opinions on this whole deal.

Really? Tell them that they don't deserve to shed tears after their god-awful GT subs, :P.

Hold on a sec. After reading the news headline again, it says that the broadcast will be for U.S. and Canada, but Canada has always been blocked from watching streams on Hulu. So, unless Hulu has lifted its viewing restrictions for Canada, I can't help but find this news to be contradictory. :?

So you're posting to whine about me supposedly whining about other folks' whining...?

I just read a couple other posts from you that amount to "This is dumb" or "Why bother?" I have to ask why you're even bothering to contribute if this is all you have to add.

True, and that is what I don't understand either. Why did they say "Canada" when Funimation hosts Hulu videos, and last I checked (just last month) I couldn't watch episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood on their Funimation channel because it was hosted by Hulu. I could watch Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood episodes on their (Funimation's) Youtube channel though thankfully. Hopefully, with more details this gets sorted out.

Good news in my opinion. It's more exposure for the franchise and can get people hooked. I've bought series after watching a few streaming episodes. If people are anything like me, they'll pay to get them on DVD/BD so they can watch them on their TV. I also don't understand why people would be pissed if the Dragon Box footage was used. It's something awesome that has become the standard now and should be shared.

Nah, I just meant that sometimes it's really pointless to point out things to ignorant people. Maybe it's just me, I don't have that kind of patience.

Surely not in this thread, other than my response to you, you haven't. Are you talking about my posts in other threads? I dunno, PM me some examples and I'll see if I can defend myself or not.

Lol, XD.

But yeah, like I said before, this is an excellent deal. With "great" anime like Bleach and Naruto Shippuden and great anime like One Piece and Fist of the North Star up on Hulu, I initially thought that Dragon Ball would already be there, but now that it actually is... Well, needless to say, I'm excited. I heart Hulu.

Too bad their history shot themselves in the foot, and the bullets are three or four different dubs, two aspect ratios, and two BGM scores. That's gonna have to be clarified before I get anywhere close to giddy.

This is my first reply on these forums. I'll do my best to make sure that my post is made appropriately. I'm excited about this news. I think it'll be nice to be able to find some Dragon Ball streaming. I feel it's a really convenient way to get the franchise out there in more homes. I've been purchasing the Dragon Boxes for my personal use and just to have archived. Once the streaming has been launched, I can be anywhere that has internet access and watch some Dragon Ball! I think it's a great idea! I don't care which version it is, or what language it is. It's just sort of a comfort to know it's close by when I need it or want it.

English-subbed? Awesome.
I haven't seen most of GT yet so I can't wait to watch it for the first time(I'm holding out for the DBOX :P).

Actually Toei has "tested the waters" before with shows like Fist of The North Star, Pretty Cure, Slam Dunk, and Digimon Adventure Zero Two. Even allowing them to be downloaded, for a fee of course. But it ended with results Toei did not like and no home release being plan for such shows. This could be because they charged for the shows first (can't recall if streaming came first or later) or not enough popularity. Some shows weren't even completely subbed.

Newer shows have more potential since they are the "hot thing" straight out of Japan, they have hype surrounding them, streaming these can increase that. Older shows might be more "hard to sell". I understand it's less risky to stream first for a potential market, but sometimes shows won't find that market and no plans for a release will be made. I'd rather just have them release the whole thing and be done with it. But I know it will never happen. :(

Anywhere in Canada and North America.

So I may act like I know something about streamed anime but to be honest I'm the biggest idiot to talk to about this. Why? Because I always buy my anime on DVD/Blu-ray so I never bothered with streaming. And now, if you don't mind I'll ask a few questions.

-How and where will this be streamed? (Video embedded on Funiomation's website?)
-What is this Hulu you talk about?
-Do you have to register anywhere?
-To my surprise I read that the streams are free. Have anime streams by their respective companies always been free?

Purely out of curiosity (and maybe a little risky to ask):
Will I (from Europe) will be able to stream these with a proxy server?
Are these streams easy to rip? i.e. Will I probably find ripped episodes or AMV's on Youtubez based on these streams?

What...? I already told you I'm a complete idiot.

It will be streamed on a video player on the sites it can be streamed from. The article states that "FUNimation will stream the series from its beginning via the official Dragon Ball Z website http://www.dragonballz.com in addition to http://www.dragonballzkai.com , http://www.funimation.com and FUNimation partner site http://www.hulu.com.

Hulu is a site with streaming episodes of popular TV shows from the big networks (such as NBC, FOX,etc) to dubbing companies (FUNi, Viz).

No you do not have to register.

Yes, most have been. The point was to at least make some money from showing their shows instead of people downloading fansubs. Not that some sites don't charge for them, usually to download them.

Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

I'd be curious to see whether they use the US broadcast music for the dub streaming or whether they've phased that out for this, too. Not that I'd be that interested either way, with the quality of the dub.

I think it's about time they do this. It would also help if the commercials they used in the streams were for the Dragon Boxes and Kai. That way they could drum up some extra business in the meantime, because whatever's good for DBZ sales is good for Funimation which is good for fans of other anime, like me.

This kind of stuff really annoys me as regions outside of the US always get shafted. Visiting the website will just tell me that it is "blocked in your region as FUNimation does not have rights to the series". But Australia gets the same FUNi Dragon Ball that everyone else gets. Personal experience with FUNi's Digimon Adventure 02 has really made me hate this kind of stuff when it ignores half of the fans.

Welcome!
Thank you, Son Wukong.

Even though I live in the US, I still wish the country restrictions were not in place. The World Wide Web is such a global thing, In specific reference to the online streaming of Dragon Ball, I cannot understand why the restrictions are there. By nature it's a foreign show being shared and enjoyed by people all over the world.

FUNi cannot do what is going to lose them money (i.e. a lawsuit because they allowed certain content to be viewed in a region they do not have the rights for). It's not a personal insult, it just is..
