The biggest flaws in Funi's GT dub
I recently got around to finally watching GT dubbed and I noticed during the fight with Baby, Goku was saying shit like "I am the light behind the darkness" and "My light shall always prevail over your hatred and evil," which I know for sure was not in the original. So I'd like to ask, are there any other big flaws in the GT dub that I should be aware of? I know the simple solution would be just to watch it subbed, but... what can I say, I love the dub, despite its flaws

Re: The biggest flaws in Funi's GT dub>
GT has a lot of homages to the original Z. The Baby fight seemed to be a homage to the fight with Freeza. Looks like Funi wanted to be clever and pull the same routine they did with Goku and his "Ally to good, nightmare to you" speech.MetalMadness wrote:I recently got around to finally watching GT dubbed and I noticed during the fight with Baby, Goku was saying shit like "I am the light behind the darkness" and "My light shall always prevail over your hatred and evil," which I know for sure was not in the original. But in all seriousness, the whole "SSJ4 Superman" approach was dumb. Unfortunately, it's been a while since I've seen Funi's dub(after getting all the Blue Water GT episodes, I never looked back), but I do remember a line said by Goku going "Be warned, I'm an expert in the art of self-defense," or something. Sure, it's not that major but it is jarring.

Elise Baughman or whatever her name is is mediocre as Pan. And they "renamed" all the Evil Dragons.
I'm trying to avoid obvious things like the replacement score. I sort of kind of don't mind dub GT.

Personally, EVERYTHING, is better in the FUNi Dub of GT. The voice acting, and soundtrack. I really didn't find myself enjoyng the BMG, and well, I never liked hearing people speak Japanese.

That's laughable. The only time GT is even tolerable is watching some of the scenes in Japanese with the Tokunaga score and excellent Japanese vocal songs. Mark Menza's score is infuriating.

THIS. Seriously, Nuova Shenron? What is that even supposed to mean? They could have easily done what they did with the names of the Dragon Balls and translated from Mandarin (ie. One Star Dragon), but they opted for "cool" names instead.B wrote:And they "renamed" all the Evil Dragons.
Re: The biggest flaws in Funi's GT dub
Well, they did. I put quotes around "renamed" because a more apt word would be "retitled." Most of them introduce themselves as Bloobity Bloop Shenron, the Four Star Dragon," so they still keep their actual names.jda95 wrote:THIS. Seriously, Nuova Shenron? I can't stand Japanese. The only season I'd understand anybody liking that Dub is if you speak Japanese, or that's the way you've always watched it.
And Mark Menza has a pretty good style that's unique for the series. You can't say this sucks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Asm4Ip8oBxk

I don't 'hate' the dub for GT, I admit Menza's score is good (more tolerable than Faulconer's in my opinion) but it does have a very different feel from the original.
Also, you don't have to speak japanese to enjoy the original. I barely speak it myself, apart from greetings or single phrases but I enjoy it far more than I do for the dub, because of the voices and the acting, which is easier to recognise.

I know. I said I like the FUNi Dub, and that I really didn't like the voice acting(Because they sound annoying), and the soundtrack.
Maybe this is because of the simple fact I grew up with GT that way, I don't know...

Oops I read that as "everything is better THAN the Funi Dub of GT." My mistake.
I think everyone on this forum is aware that you hate anything and everything Japanese since it is basically all you ever say.

Also, "Nuova" probably comes from the English word "nova".
Re: The biggest flaws in Funi's GT dub
The TV version of GT's dub was my first method of experiencing the series, too. And I also kinda liked it that way at first.
Then sometime soon after that, I rented one of the DVDs, and by virtue of switching over to the Japanese track out of curiosity, I realized how much the English dub sucked. Never looked back.
The version on the Green Bricks with the original BGM and very-well-dubbed theme songs was much better in comparison, but the scripting flaws that everyone's been mentioning are all still there.

The Para Para Brothers are still rapping even if you switch the BGM to something that has no hip-hop influence at all.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Re: The biggest flaws in Funi's GT dub
The only problem I have with Funi's dub is in the first episode Goku says something like "Does this mean I have to go back to school?" lol Goku never went to school. Other than that I think it's pretty good, it does go well with the original Japanese music. Not a big fan of Menza's music though.

Re: The biggest flaws in Funi's GT dub
I always hated how they dubbed over all of the clips in the ending montage. Oh well, it would've been even worse if they'd just had the Mark Menza's tracl playing.
I do like Goku's very last line though: " 'til we meet again guys!"

Osh** That's clever
I don't mind the scores for the English Dub. But something bothered me about the whole last fight scene with the spirit bomb. Hell, Buu at least tried to and did push the Spirit Bomb back. Omega (w/e dub name who cares) didn't even bother throwing up a hand to it. Idk. That whole scene seemed wrong to me. I don't think that particular scored worked very well for that scene. It could have been done better.
