Well they could air it uncut, no material is something not being shown TV. If they did they would have to change the rating, maybe have to change the time slot, advertising, parents would get up in arms, etc, etc.

They can, they just rather not.

Oh wow, they legally have to censore 'shit'? I've seen that word dropped on Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan (which, albeit, does tend to air with a TV-MA).

One's on HBO the other is a movie. So.....yeah.

Also South Park had a whole episode about the word so it's allowed on basic cable. But that too had a TV-MA rating.

Eh? I've heard it on Spike TV and TNT. Sure they toss in a disclaimer some times, but otherwise it's there on two popular channels.

The FCC has to. But, channels with Standards and Practices don't HAVE to, but do tend to choose to, purely for the advertisers wishes. Some companies who buy ad time don't like swearing. Adult Swim, Comedy Central, they usually bleep shit, but they do occasionally find situations not to.

Any channel can air anything they want.

If they get in legal trouble after the fact is a different matter (for over the air channels, not cable.)

Or if their advertisers would throw a fit over it is yet another matter (due to parents potentially complaining to THEM about the content of the show.)

No channel in the USA 'has' to edit ANYTHING.

Shit gets tossed around regularly on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

On channels regulated by the FCC, they can get sued for it.

On channels with Standards and Practices, they can still get in trouble if the use of the swears aren't approved. Comedy Central, for instance, does allow it now and again, but not every time, and not in every time slot, or show. If they can, it's not bleeped. If they can't, it's bleeped.

Movie channels like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, they tend to be allowed to go through the full range of colorful words.

The FCC has extensive control over broadcast media and cable networks. As noted above, movie channels, or for that matter anything you have to pay a special subscription fee for, is generally not subject to regulation because it's the equivalent of buying a DVD. The logic is that children have easier access to broadcast and cable networks; if the parents buy anything else, it falls on them to regulate their kids' viewing of the programming.

One of the lead cases deals with George Carlin's 7 dirty words being broadcast on the radio while a dad and his son were in the car on their way home from the son's school in the afternoon. The U.S. Supreme Court basically said that there is a sufficiently important interest in preventing kids from being exposed to some of this material to justify allowing the FCC to restrict the time periods during which certain words are able to be used.

As for Comedy Central, "shit" can be used after 10pm if the TV rating thing includes a particular descriptor.

America is a mad house with its weird TV ratings, that's for sure.

It still doesn't explain why Kai is getting cut up so much.
I can understand them taking out some of the blood.
But when they are cutting out half of every fight something has gone very wrong.
I can't even imagine what watching one of these diced episodes must be like.

It explains it perfectly: Nicktoons doesn't want that level of violence airing on its channel.

Do either of you actually even WATCH the Nicktoons version? Personally, I don't even notice the edits. Unless it's real obvious. Like Vegeta decapitating Gurd.

Hmm, if you think it's stupid that they edit out the word "stupid" wait untill episode 31 where they edit out the word "maggot" twice! Yea, have fun with that.

I only notice an edit with dialogue when a swear isn't used when it should be or when they are talking about death.

My god, and here was me thinking the edited dub was actually alright with edits. But then I discovered these comparisons and from there on out my judgement has begun to waver and now it's on the verge of deciding the NickToons version really is bad.

"Maggot"? ... Seriously? ... What do they replace it with, "Worm"?

Usually I'd say you'd have to wait and see until I post the comparison (Wednesday night or early Thursday) but I'm feeling generous today. In one place it's changed to "weakling" while the other is just omitted due to the scene being shortened.

It looks to me like the orange blood could have been a result not of innovation, but out of necessity. Looking at the side by side comparisons, from both this and other episodes, it seems like they just pick the color they are changing and apply it to the entire shot (for example, I noticed that if there were blood edits and the character's mouth was open, the inside of their mouth looked less red than usual). In this episode, it looks like they ran into a problem with Reacoom's hair being too close to the red they were trying to change. They may have tried changing the red to black/brown, but it also messed with Reacoom's hair color, so they had to try something else.
Why do I think this? Observe Tanooki's side by side shot:
Image
Notice how Reacoom's hair looks like a lighter shade of orange in the edited version? It looks close to the color of the edited blood, right? That's why I think they had to change the color of edited blood to something different than their normal practice, because it would have altered Reacoom's hair too noticeably. As for why everyone else has orange blood, too, they probably just did the same thing for everyone in this episode to keep it simpler for the editors. I don't remember if it goes back to dried blood/dirt in the later episodes, or if it stays orange from here on out....

And this has been your completely random observation for the day.

These edits are pointless. They're worse than the edits made on CN. CN would occasionally show quite a bit of blood. Nicktoons? They seem as if the tiniest bit of blood, will ruin every child in America. But then again, who doesn't think that these days. And really "Jerk"? Little kids use that word on a regular basis. So what's the problem with that. I don't see them using "Punk" regularly.

Anyway great comparisons Tanooki! :D
