What If FUNi decided to create a new music-mix for Kai?
Alright, lets get one quick thing straight before I create this topic, I have no intention of this thread having any disrespect to fans of the dub score or the original Japanese scores of Kai or Dragonball Z. I am just making this to see if this would be of interest to anybody here.
With that out of the way, I came across a couple of interesting fan-made Kai videos showcasing what the Kai dub "would have" looked like if the FUNimation dub had used a remix sort of score different than the Kai score. Here are the links so you can watch them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXiH0J1C ... re=related (Vegeta Goes SSJ)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTtlZEm13Ak&NR=1 (Future Trunks VS Freeza)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsDtGr6T ... re=related (Goku VS Captain Ginyu)
Now, as you can see in these fan-made videos, they are nothing more than a mock-up of what the dub would have sounded like once FUNimation began dubbing these episodes.
The thing i'm curious in isn't the dub, there is no question in my mind that the Kai dub being produced and released now is miles ahead of their old Z dub, but that isn't the matter here. What i'm interested is in how the music is in these videos.
I personally love the Bruce Faulconer, Kikuchi, and the new Kai score. They all bring something original to the table in terms of quality and effectiveness on different scenes throughout Dragonball Z/Kai.
But my main question is this, in respect to all the music scores that have happened throughout DBZ, would anyone think a new music score like this would work for not just an American audience, but for Kai as a whole? I personally think from these fan-made videos, that they are edgy and truly bring out what I believe Faulconer set out to create. Before you say "well the original is the best" or that "Faulconer ruined Dragonball Z", consider the fact that his music was created as a way to create a new atmosphere for Dragonball Z, and that the score has many fans who appreciated what it was.
Would something like this possibly draw in newer fans of the franchise and perhaps re-create what Faulconer had created?
If FUNimation had created a score like this to appease to older fans, while having a DVD release with both scores on it, would it be possibly successful, or would it just be bringing back a score that shouldn't have been created?

Re: What If FUNi decided to create a new music-mix for Kai?
This being a board full of Kikuchi fans, the anticipated answer kind of writes itself.
I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing a Kai with the Faulconer score (as long as the original score is intact ala the Orange Bricks). There are definitely things that Faulconer did better, and there are things that Kikuchi did better.
A project I recently worked on involved trying to replace the Kikuchi score for Movie 6 with the Faulconer score. I wasn't able to remove the Kikuchi score because of the way the audio channels were set up on the DVD, but there were plenty of places with no music in it. Something that worked remarkably well was having songs from all three play throughout, plus some silence. There are a good handful of very appropriate tracks from all three sources, and it was pretty cool to bring them all together.

Thanks. I needed that today.
In all serious, replacement music is a terrible practice that never should have existed.

If they replaced the music, then out of principle I wouldn't watch their dub (and thus have no reason to buy the home releases). Unless there was at least an "original music" version available too.

Yeah, I agree. I like both Kikuchi's music and Faulconer's music.xzero wrote: There are definitely things that Faulconer did better, and there are things that Kikuchi did better.
But I think Kai's score is perfect as-is and I'm glad there aren't any music replacements anymore. The hard rock stuff just doesn't do it for me.

Re: What If FUNi decided to create a new music-mix for Kai?
Being pretty much raised on the Faulconer score, then finding the Kikuchi score and comparing each's strengths and weaknesses, I would agree. But I would find not a new composed score interesting, but what like FUNi did for some of the movies and what those fanmade video showed with a track of music made by professional artists. I would find it interesting, but not more enjoyable then what they have now.xzero wrote: There are definitely things that Faulconer did better, and there are things that Kikuchi did better.

The Vegeta goes SSJ video to me was the only one that worked....The third video made me realize how much better Ginyu's voice has gotten ><

For someone like me who prefers the dub score, even I can admit that replacing music is a thing of the past. However, if it was hypothetically done, I'd simply choose whichever one sounds better to me. The more options, the better. This is all, of course, assuming that I supported Kai, which I actually don't. When Funi makes the Kai cast redub everything, then I'll jump ship.

Agreed. Please remember where it is you are posting. You already have the majority on your side, so there is absolutely no reason to stoop to condescending bullshit. I not only encourage, but demand, that everyone feel free to share and express the opinions they hold dear. If you are unable to do it in a friendly manner, however, please climb back into the hole you crawled out of.jjgp1112 wrote:This was completely necessary.penguintruth wrote:![]()

I dunno about that. Did "options" in a musical score help collect, motivate, and comrade-ize the English speaking fanbase? Not particularly. I'd wager it did far more damage than it did good.Ultimate_DB_Fan wrote:The more options, the better.

Really though, I honestly don't see how a replacement score could possibly be a good thing for the show (or especially the community).
You'd have to either hate Yamamoto's score... or just really want to go against the crowd, if you actually want a replacement score (especially one you haven't even heard yet).
Re: What If FUNi decided to create a new music-mix for Kai?
It's not that I outright want it, I just don't care either way, and if it turned out that a replacement score was good, then hey, I'm all for it.

It still seems totally pointless to me though. It feels like something a fan should be trying to do, rather than something a respectable anime dubbing company should do.jjgp1112 wrote:It's not that I outright want it, I just don't care either way, and if it turned out that a replacement score was good, then hey, I'm all for it.

Re: What If FUNi decided to create a new music-mix for Kai?
Yeah. It would seem (from the buisness side of things) that making a new score to replace one that is only about a year or two old would be a waste of money. I could see why they did re-score the original Z, but even then the first English dub came out months after the Japanese version ended, so... it seems not worth it.Rory wrote:It still seems totally pointless to me though. Re: What If FUNi decided to create a new music-mix for Kai?
Well it would kill all credibility of them claiming that they are doing it right this time. Even if they got the script 100% correct (which they didn't by the way), then the music would definitely still kill that entire notion. However, while I like a lot of Kai's music, a lot of times it's repetitive and there are times that it is just boring to listen to. I like the battle music (like the one on the menu of FUNimation's Kai menus) and the opener. The closing theme... I could do without, but the Japanese version isn't nearly as difficult to listen to.
Anyway, my opinion is that if DBZKai was done so differently than the original like Z was (music, dialog, etc.) then I'd be fine with it because I could look at it as two separate shows. But if it was the same thing with a different score, then it would just be weird and I wouldn't be sure how to look at it.

Re: What If FUNi decided to create a new music-mix for Kai?
Yamamoto's score was always intended to be a more "Modern" score than the Kikuchi score was anyway, so I see absolutely no reason to replace it with anything unless you're one of those fans with a lot of video editing experience who wants to see what Kai would look/sound like with the Kikuchi or Faulconer scores. But really, doing a replacement score is yesterday's (and 4kids') archaic practice, it just plain isn't done anymore.
Really, I see Yamamoto's score as a great equalizer to the fanbase. We're a fanbase who are often divided by a LOT of different factors. Sub Vs. Dub, Ocean Vs. FUNi in-House, Faulconer Vs. Kikuchi, Widescreen Washed out Vs Fullscreen Dragon Box Hotness. It's a lot of in-fighting that we do all the time.
With Kai, we have a LOT of things in common between the dub and sub. Both versions have a majority of their original cast returning, but with a few major recasts (Tenshinhan, Nappa, The Ginyu Special Corps. in Japanese, Gohan, Bulma, Freeza in Eng), Both versions have some differences noticed in the character portrayals (some say Horikawa sounds a bit more strained, Tsuru Phoned in the beginning, in Japanese, The entire dub is... amazingly better...)
But at the end of the day, that will still break down to "Japanese Vs English" to some people.
But the Yamamoto score is universal. To both Japanese version fans who prefer Kikuchi and Dubbies who prefer Faulconer, neither get their "Preferred" score in Kai. It's new to everyone. We all go into this one fresh and new. I like that.

Re: What If FUNi decided to create a new music-mix for Kai?
Putting in a replacement score would basically be the powers that be at FUNimation smacking me in the face, pointing at me, and yelling "DON'T BUY THIS".
Most of Kai's selling point is "HEY, HERE'S HOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE!! UNTOUCHED WITH THE ORIGINAL MUSIC INTACT, 4:3, HIGHLY ACCURATE SCRIPTS, IMPROVED ENGLISH DUB, UNCENSORED, WITHOUT THE FILLER!!"
They'd knowingly be shooting themselves in the foot. I know some people would rather have the Faulconer score while watching Dragon Ball... but then again, there's probably some crazy kids out there who would rather listen to "Bodies" by Drowning Pool while watching the battle for Helm's Deep.

Well, that, and the Yamamoto score is both largely orchestral (which Kikuchi fans would like) and incorporates rockish bits (which Faulconer fans might like). It possibly appeals to fans of both the Kikuchi and Faulconer score.DemonRin wrote:Yamamoto's score was always intended to be a more "Modern" score than the Kikuchi score was anyway, so I see absolutely no reason to replace it with anything unless you're one of those fans with a lot of video editing experience who wants to see what Kai would look/sound like with the Kikuchi or Faulconer scores. Personally, I think it's a little limited in its gravity, but it does a fair job usually.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much what every has said.
No real point doing a new music-mix for Kai especially, yeah FUNi would lose all credibility they started to gain from thr DB fanbase that started with... the Dragon Boxes.
I definitely agree with DemonRin and PenguinTruth that Yamamoto's score is a nice medium but even at times I start pulling my hairout when "Dub" fans claim that Kai's dub sucks because the music is "sucky."
