Dragon Ball and Friends!!

Post by Rory » Wed Jan 05, 2011 5:43 pm

Here's a fun topic!
Do you have friends you enjoy Dragon Ball with? If so, do you talk about the series with them as you would on Daizex?
This was brought on by me realising how much my Dragon Ball talk irritates my fellow fan boy friends.... 'cause they're fans of the dub.
Whenever I say "Kuririn", they seem to respond "... you mean "Krillin" (despite that they already know who I'm talking about). Heck, even the way I pronounce "Gokuu" seems to make them cringe (and don't get me started on their reactions to "Saiyan" :) ). Simply talking about the series seems to be a struggle, as things are so different for us.... sometimes I just give in, so we can actually talk about Dragon Ball. Suffice to say even when they finally happen, the conversations are hardly of Daizex calibre.... but it's better than nothing! :P

Anybody else have any experiences like this?

Whenever I say "sigh-in" to anyone I know that likes it whatsoever, they act like we're two different species.

Most of my friends are the ones I see in school, and there everyone likes Dragon Ball. No one hesitates to admit that they grew up with it and still love it thanks to Z Kai. Some of my teachers even reference it in class(I still remember the "Leave my Dragon Ball and Goku alone" remark one of my teachers once made when we were having a discussion on crazy hair). We don't talk about hardcore stuff like the Japanese version and such, but we do talk about weather or not X was stronger than Y, the games, etc. Casual and general DB material and what have you.

I think I know, like, two people in my school that like Dragon Ball, and one of them's my friend. We don't hang around much these days, but when we do, sometimes we talk about DB. Our most recent conversation was about him buying the Raging Blast games, although he said it was disappointing there's no GT characters. I did warn him about the first RB game, with its bad camera and reviews, but he went and bought it anyway. He's a pretty casual DB fan and likes pretty much everything Dragon Ball (apart from pre-Z, which wasn't his cup of tea). Seriously, I went with him to watch Evolution in the cinema and when we came out, he found it great and said the scene with Chatku's Kamehameha was awesome.

Our conversations aren't really on Daizex calibre though. We don't criticize the series, talk about dubs/subs, etc. I don't think he's even noticed that I've been saying "Sigh-an" or "Tenshinhan". All-in-all, it's pretty easy talking to him about DB.

I got a friend of mine into DBZKai. They thought it was pretty awesome. Then we started making DBZ Abridged jokes.

I also used to have a REALLY good friend, that used to come over and play BT2 with me, and watch DBZ with sometimes. Now we really aren't that good friends anymore, and I heard he's doing drugs.

Anyway, yeah. That's about the only people.

Most of my friends love Dragon Ball. But few of them follow the original Japanese series and then they don't know the original characters' names. We have grown up with the Italian version of Mediaset What's my Destiny Dragon Ball, in which the dub is very different from the original. Most of my friends don't know "Kamehameha" is the correct term for the "Onda energetica" (which is the term used in the Italian dub.) :D

So my friend started watching the old FUNi dub. He thought T ien was a cool name. He thought the Japanese version was stupid. Then he started watching Kai. He then thought that Tien was a stupid name. Now he watches other animes and decides DB is mediocre, after switching opinions on things a couple times. I'm sure he'll change his mind in a month or two.

It was kinda different for this one guy I knew, where this was back when I was a dubbie but starting to read the Viz stuff, but because he had only been experienced to the Viz Manga, he would be all "Kuririn" and "Light of Death", while I was more "Krillin" and "Special Beam Cannon". Then I kinda softened to the more accurate stuff when I read the Viz and then found Daizex, plus Z Kai, I'm still "Krillin" (but if you say Kuririn fast enough, it sounds like Krillin), but am "Makakansappo"
"Perfect" is the enemy of the good. True for Cell and true for real life.
Don't forget to slow down and enjoy yourself.

Yeah, they changed attacks too. For example Gohan's Masenko is called ''Lampo distruttore'', translated in English ''Destroyer flash'', Krilin's Kienzan is called ''Cerchio magico'', which translated means ''Magic ring'' or also the Genkidama is changed in ''Energia Sferica'' (Spherical Energy) and others that probabily I don't remember now... :)

All my Dragonball friends are long gone. I mostly talk to my boyfriend about DB stuff but half the time I feel like I'm boring him to death because he's not really into it like I am. I would talk to my cousin but he's only 10 years old and he's just starting to get into the series. I wish I had more people to talk to about DB but that's what Daizex forum is for.

Same. I point out DBZAbridged stuff occasionally to my friends, but that's about it. Other than that they think I'm a neard.

All of my friends are into Dragonball in some small way. In most cases, I'm the guy they go to if they have any questions(that or they go to my friend Chris). And yes, while all of my friends and I are fans of the dub, we do tend to have "Daziex-type" discussions. In fact, usually if I post a topic here it's because I first had the discussion with friends; for example, the physics one.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?
