You should obviously watch the Japanesw dub of the movies first, just to hear Norio Wakamoto as Lando.VegettoEX wrote:(PLEASE NOTE: I am not a Star Wars fan. I know there were changes made to the movies for later editions. I don't know what dubs there are. I don't know if people argue about dub voices. I don't care. If and when I decide to watch the movies, it's clear that I'll try to watch whatever the original version is if it's available to me.)

I hadn't till just recently. Well, except for Episode One... But I guess it's about as surprising that there are children who don't know what a Kamehame-Ha is. It sads me...

Eh, that analogy doesn't really work because you don't speak French. People watch dubs because they prefer experiencing the show in their own native language. Why would I watch the Tagalog dub of One Piece, for instance?VegettoEX wrote: That's where the show is from. I'm not going to watch Star Wars in French just because I can and maybe there's controversy about Leia's voice and maybe I should form my own opinion about it when the original's right there in front of me.

Of course the analogy works. To us, it has nothing to do with any kind of bias of watching something in our language. It's only about watching something in its original form, regardless of whether it happens to be in our language or an entirely different language. Therefore, he'll watch Dragon Ball in Japanese and Star Wars in English. It's as simple as that.
And, yeah, why would you watch the Tagalog dub of One Piece? It's neither its original form or (I'm assuming) your native language, so that has nothing to do with either Mike's argument or your argument.

But French isn't VegettoEX's language, hence why I said the analogy doesn't work.Gaffer Tape wrote:Of course the analogy works. To us, it has nothing to do with any kind of bias of watching something in our language.
Yes it does. The Tagalog dub of One Piece isn't the original or in my native language, and the French dub of Star Wars isn't the original or in VegettoEX's native language.Gaffer Tape wrote: And, yeah, why would you watch the Tagalog dub of One Piece? Re: Dub or Sub? (It's not what you think!)
It doesn't work for you because you're using the analogy in reference to your position, which is about wanting to see something in one's native language. Since Mike's position is different from the one you're comparing it to, how can you possibly say it doesn't work? That's a completely unfair analysis. To people who are only interested in the original version, whatever dubs are based on that original version are irrelevant, be it your language or some completely random language. And in that context, a French Star Wars dub is exactly the same as English Dragon Ball. They're both not the original version. Whether it's his native language or not has no bearing on how he feels about it.

That's fair enough; if VegettoEX wants to watch things in their original language (which isn't always Japanese in Anime), then I have absolutely no problem with it. I just had an issue with his French Star Wars analogy, because he doesn't actually speak the language.Gaffer Tape wrote:It doesn't work for you because you're using the analogy in reference to your position, which is about wanting to see something in one's native language. Also, for the record, I don't always want to watch things in English. It varies from medium to medium.

Again, I still don't see why you do. It's like me picking up a bowl and saying, "This bowl looks just like my bowl," and then you saying, "Well, it doesn't look like my bowl, so you must be wrong." You're just comparing his analogy to the wrong set of facts. Not that I'm saying your set of facts are wrong, just that they're not the same set of circumstances he was making an analogy to.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:I just had an issue with his French Star Wars analogy, because he doesn't actually speak the language.
Heh, don't worry. I've been debating with you long enough now at this point to remember that. Also, for the record, I don't always want to watch things in English. It varies from medium to medium.

There's really no question to what you should do if they're really fine with watching it subbed, as no one here is going to say it isn't far superior. I watched most of the dub of Dragon Ball and found it to be a pretty accurate job of conveying the story and characters, but really, it doesn't hold a candle to the original.

We have officially finished the Saiyain Arc! She enjoyed it, naturally. She also appluaded everytime Vegeta was "defeated" xD. Its also interesting to note that Goku is only character she had genuine interest in besides Gohan and by that, I mean she didnt care too much about the battle with Nappa or the Saibaimen. Not that I have problem with it, just thought I'd put that out there. I'm looking forward to seeing how she reacts to no Goku half the Namek Arc xD. Just in case anybody cared.
Re: Dub or Sub? (It's not what you think!)
Did you start at Z? That could be why she didn't care for the Nappa fight. If you've watched Dragon Ball all the way to Z, you've grown with these characters. Their deaths are a much bigger deal and give off a greater impact.sniperking323 wrote:We have officially finished the Saiyain Arc! She enjoyed it, naturally. I realize that. I would've gladly shown her DB if it were'nt for the streaming not starting earlier and that I have next to no money for the blue bricks u.u. Then again, I thought thought that showing her Kai/Z first would get her interested in watching origin storys later. Hell, she already wants to see more on Lunch xD.AgitoZ wrote:Did you start at Z?
