A'ight, now this is a real fan confession!

I don't own that much Dragon Ball merchandise. I've been a fan for 7 or 8 years now, but currently the only DB stuff I own are the complete set of Viz's Dragon Ball/Z manga, some of the video games and a DBZ t-shirt based on the cover of Sparking! NEO. I used to have some other video games, but I sold them (regrettably). And I had an old DBZ magazine from a while back (I remember seeing a sticker of SSj Goku beating up #19 and thinking "Who the fuck is that fat clown freak?!") and an old DBZ poster, but I don't know what happened to the former and the latter was pretty much destroyed when I moved house.

So basically, a pretty pitiful "collection". No anime, no guidebooks, no figures, no doujin...nothing. I haven't even watched the anime in full; only watched clips on the internet. I would buy more Dragon Ball merchandise...if I had the money. Hard as hell to save up money for anything these days. :(

I think this is more of a confession.

I've watched every single dubbed episode yet I haven't read a single WHOLE Volume of the Manga.

I like the Garlic Jr. Saga
I like Movie 4, somewhat
Movie 11 isn't the greatest but I don't think it's absolutely god awful
Movie 6 is my least favorite, it's amazing how lame they made Cooler and it has some of the worst animation as far as the movies go
Season 3 aside, I think the original FUNi dub is fine and actually love a lot of the writing later on (I'd love for a Kai level re-dub though)
Broly is pretty cool to for what he is
I don't think LSSJ Broly is as strong as SSJ3 Goku (Do people even still think this? It's been a while since I've had discussions like this...)
I think Base Trunks is stronger than SSJ Vegeta during the Android Saga, I honestly forget my reasoning though
Yamamoto > Faulconer/Morgan/Smith > Kikuchi (Don't get me wrong, I love his work a lot) > Levy > Menza
I don't like Masako Nozawa as Goku when he becomes an adult
With the exception of the first three movies, I think the Ocean cast is awful, which is weird since Ocean Group is usually great in general
Cha La Head Cha La sucks to me, I prefer We Gotta Power and Dragon Soul. Zenkai Power is awful, We Were Angels is amazing though
I'd watch the anime before I read the manga any day, but this goes for most series with me

+ I laugh at a lot of Goku's sarcastic quips to Freeza in the old Funi dub. I actually think they would be pretty funny lines if they were coming out of say...Spider-Man's mouth instead of Son's.

+I actually sort of have a personal issue with subtitles just because I can't lay down on my bed while watching TV when I have them on because it's too far away. I could move it but that would require me unplugging everything and plugging it in near my bed which I'd have to move back when I'm done because it would be very inconvenient to leave it there. FIRST WORLD ISSUES!

+ I love you guys but the In Universe section makes me cringe real hard a lot of the time.

+ I do like bits and pieces of the Bruce dub music and I’d be very interested to hear a Kai mix where people leave in silence and pick the best tracks from the dub and place them in at appropriate times.

+Even though I’m not a huge dub fan I still have a weird sense of nostalgia towards it, maybe it’s just the stories people tell.

+I’m not a TFS fan at all and get annoyed at the memes it has spawned. It’s along the line of 4chan humor to me at this point.

+Regardless, I still think Masako would make a fantastic dub Son Goku.

+ I hate the series has gone on long enough that we got a brother for Vegeta and SSJ3 Brolli. That was kind of the breaking point for me. I really wish this series would come to a complete halt.

+I have a tough time watching any of the DBZ movies all the way through mostly because the fighting scenes bore me.

People would probably take less issue with this than for my reasoning. In general, subtitles are cancerous and an half-assed "adaptation" of the original source material in my opinion, I'd take the worst dub in the world over subs any day. As far as physical media being played on a TV goes, picture composition is ruined with oversized, jaggy, pixelated, eye seeringly white words at the bottom of the screen.

Looking at subtitles is tantamount to me staring at lightbulbs flickering at the bottom of my TV screen for 30 minutes or more at a time, just terrible. And for screen encompassing shots like facial close ups of people talking, people running, attack animations etc. the central viewing problem is only replaced with a different but equally annoying one! And then what if you didn't finish reading a huge ass line that was only displayed for a few seconds? If I wanted to constantly back track, I'd play a JRPG, not watch DVDs. For media rips or fan subs, they're slightly more tolerable... but still abysmal and I'd rather just watch the series/film raw. With Freeze-Subs' Kai episodes, I practically already know what's going on because I've seen Z so many times, so I just turn the subs off. I don't like the fact that Kai's TV broadcast is selectively cropped, and subs only make it worse.

I understand that the director's original intent can be lost when the material is dubbed into a different language, but that's not an issue if the dub is faithful or otherwise enjoyable to watch (Which as far modern anime dubs go, is 90% of the time). On the other hand, covering up the bottom of the screen is almost as much an insult to the animators or cinematographers involved as cropping the 4:3 picture into wide screen or vice-versa. Don't even get me started about the time I tried watching one of the DBZ Orange Bricks with subs, what a ghastly affair...

In reference to Steve Simmons' subs for Dragon Ball, Z, GT, Kai etc. in particular, I'm sure he's an amazing translator, but herein lies the problem... He's just that, a translator. There's a difference between being a great translator and being a great writer. The subs are always, always dull as hell for me to read... in comparison to say, the Buu Saga dub in Z or the entirety of the Kai dub where some liberties are taken but the dialogue is so much snappier and enjoyable to listen to in general. Another example, I could say the exact same thing about the amazing Yu Yu Hakusho dub. I tried to watch it subtitled and while I couldn't object to the acting, the dialogue put me to sleep... I've never taken the time to read any other sub scripts for anime series, but I'm willing to bet I'd have this problem with most if not all of them. That's just me though.

However if base Trunks is stronger than SSJ Vegeta how strong is SSJ Trunks going to be? Kami did afterall state, that Vegeta was stronger than Trunks...

You think thats bad all I have is DBXs 1 3 and 4 DB Season 4 and DBGT Season 2 (wich my neice has almost destroyed) and Volume 1 of the Manga.

Anyway

I Prefer Stephanie Nadolnys Goku over Colleen Clinkenbeards Goku.

I like King Kais BG dub voice (dispite the bad voice acting).

I prefer Ocean dub DBZ Movies 1 2 and 3 over Funi dub.

I wouldn't say TSF goes anywhere near the point of 4chan humor, it's all inside Dragon Ball jokes. Unlike Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series, which really has just become internet references/4chan humor.

Yeah, weakest point of TSF is whenever they bring shit like Popo, or 'Ghost Nappa' into it (makes me cringe just typing it).

Where to start..
- I would give up the right to own Dragon Ball products to meet Akira Toriyama once.
- I don't think Yamamoto's Kai score is bad, just rather boring and repetitive.
- I would rather watch the 1998 dub of the Ginyu vs Goku episodes than GT
- I would rather watch GT than Evolution.
- I always had a soft spot for Goten, before Gotenks appeared.
-It's ridiculous that after regaining his energy, Goku only needed to go SSJ to kill Buu with the Genki-Dama.
- When Goku 'died' after fighting Frieza, I was happy the first time I saw it, because I thought Goku was a cocky jerk.
- Rock the Dragon > We Gotta Power
- Vic Mignoga's Dragon Soul > Sean Schemmel's > Takayoshi Tanimoto's > Justin Cook's

That's not really that controversial of a preference, tons of people on here love those dubs, even I enjoy them to an extent despite how much that particular era of DBZ's run in America annoyed me in general.

My confessions:

-Sean Schemmel is way better than Masako Nozawa as Adult Goku, and gets way too much smack from sub fans. His Kaio I can understand, but not Goku.
-I'm indifferent to FUNi's Z dub. It has it's good and bad points.
-Kai is awesome, and a great way to refresh DBZ to a new audience, and bring old ones back.
-The Dragon Boxes are better than the Orange Bricks.
-Kikuchi is better than Johnson/Faulconer
-Tokunaga is better than Menza
-DBE sucked, and was embarrassing to the DB fanbase.
-The dub with Japanese music tracks make the Z & GT dubs a lot better than with the Johnson/Faulconer/Menza music, and takes the best thing from the dub (the voices) and mixes them with best thing of the Japanese version (the music).
-Hates that the DB & DBZ dub is missing most of the insert songs.
-I can do an almost perfect imitation of Sabat's current Vegeta voice.
-I find the Japanese version to be overrated, but the Japanese score is awesome.
-Chris Ayres' Freeza was a perfect casting choice.
-The Garlic Jr. & GT are much better than the Red Ribbon Army arc to me. However Tao Pai Pai is badass.

I like Dragon Ball GT. I used to be one of its biggest detractors, but for some reason I lightened up. I bought the Season Sets and now I enjoy the crap out of it.

I love Dragon Ball GT Final Bout, Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Battle 22, & Dragon Ball Z Sagas. I know they're considered terrible games, and I acknowledge that, but I always have so much fun when I play them and that's what really matters in the end.

I hate Dragon Ball Z Legends. Every DB fan I talk to considers it the holy grail of DBZ games, but I can't stand it. The game plays itself. I don't do anything and my other 2 characters on screen pretty much just do everything for me.

Because of Toriyama, I will try anything he worked on be it manga or video game. I discovered Dragon Quest VIII just because he does the DQ art.

I always compare any villian or hero from another anime I watch to Goku. I'm extremely biased and still consider Goku to be the most powerful anime character ever.

Dragon Ball isn't my main inspiration for getting into weight lifting and martial arts, but it's definitely one of my inspirations.

-I never bought any of the edited DVD's, the bilingual DVD singles, the Ultimate Uncut DVD's, nor the orange bricks. (Well, I bought Orange Brick Season One, but I immediately sold it because there were so many things wrong with the set that I don't even have to explain it).

-I bought the Blue Bricks (DB: All Seasons) and the Green Brick (GT The Complete series). Though not as grand as their Dragon Box counterparts, they were handled better than the orange bricks (with the correct aspect ratio of 4:3 instead of cropping them to 16:9). I also bought all of the Steelbook double features (Except for the Movie 1/2 double feature since I already have the FUNI/Pioneer DVD's)

-The Dragon Boxes are the best releases of Dragon Ball ever. It was since then I started collecting the DVD's.

-With the exception of FUNI/Pioneer dub of the first three DBZ movies, I did not like any version of Dragon Ball Z's English Dubs (the series and the movies) because of so many story/dialogue and character changes to a point when the show is nothing more than a generic 90's action cartoon. I did not like GT's dub either. I prefer the Japanese versions of Dragon Ball, Z and GT. My favorite roles from Nozawa are Goku and Kid Gohan (Though I like Nozawa's Gohan for all ages, Kid Gohan is my favorite role of hers).

-I have a soft spot for Dragon Ball's dub (Not Z. Not GT. Just DB). I like to watch the dub for nostalgia's sake (I liked it better than Z at the time.). I also like it because the story/dialogue (at least in the uncut version) is kinda close to the original, the Japanese BGM was kept, and the characterizations are correct most of the time. Prior to Kai, this dub was the closest to an accurate translation possible. Do I still prefer the Japanese version over this dub? Yes I do. This is because one of my gripes about the dub is that FUNI had to present continuity to Z's dub by adding dub names, attacks, and terminology. Overall. The dub is decent and will forever be a part of my childhood memories.

-Shunsuke Kikuchi is my number one favorite anime music composer. His works in DB/Z are phenomenal. All other composers (Shuki Levy, Nathan Johnson, Bruce Faulconer, Kenji Yamamoto) for the franchise (sans GT) do not even remotely compare to that guy. He's been composing music for almost half a century now. If there are any works of his that I like a little better than DB/Z, they would be Grendizer and Daimos. (Listen to the Daimos Transformation Theme. That deserves "Crowning Music Of Awesome").

-I like Dragon Ball Kai's dub. I have waited long enough for DBZ to get an accurate and proper English dub. Out of all the English dub voice actors, Young's Freeza was the one I can't stand the most. Chris Ayres' Freeza completely blows away Linda Young. This is who Freeza should be: an aristocratic-like tyrant with a sense of politeness and not like a Grandma. The voice recasts are outstanding. Gohan actually sounds like a young boy, Bulma has more emotion, and the rest of the replacements are just a good. Some of the returning actors have improved drastically since they started. To me, DBZ Kai IS the definitive DBZ Dub.
