Define "true".
They both exist. They are both things made in an official capacity. No-one's flat-out said, "This replaces this one definitively, so ignore that other one."
Are you asking about folks' personal preference? Well, that's something else entirely!

Dragon Ball Online is the official manga continuation. Dragon Ball GT is the official anime continuation.

I'm sorry, but I just can't take folks seriously when they humor the idea of a video game being in equitable "canonical" standing with a television show.

Pretty much this. This is how I view it since GT can be view as the official anime continuation since its made by Toei and the same producers where behind GT.Piccolo Daimao wrote:Dragon Ball Online is the official manga continuation. Dragon Ball GT is the official anime continuation.

Dan Aykroyd said the Ghostbusters game pretty much was the third movie, though an actual third movie is in development now (and may or may not ignore the game if it does happen). I believe The Matrix Online was also considered an official sequel. So it's not completely out of the question.Savage68 wrote:I'm sorry, but I just can't take folks seriously when they humor the idea of a video game being in equitable "canonical" standing with a television show.

I personally prefer to think that the canonical Dragon Ball story started with kid Goku finding something to eat and ended with Goku flying with Oob on his back. As sad as that may be, the story lasted 400+ episodes (10 years ? 40+ books ?) so I can't really complain.

As far I am concerned, canonicity is determined by the author, not the media.Savage68 wrote:I'm sorry, but I just can't take folks seriously when they humor the idea of a video game being in equitable "canonical" standing with a television show.

The Matrix Online is kinda iffy, but Enter the Matrix was definitely considered a canonical part of the story. Do I even need to bring up stuff like the .hack series?TripleRach wrote:Dan Aykroyd said the Ghostbusters game pretty much was the third movie, though an actual third movie is in development now (and may or may not ignore the game if it does happen). By the way, Savage, I don't believe that a single person has claimed that DBO is a sequel to a television show. DBGT definitely takes that spot. People are talking about the manga.

I usually associate "Dragon Ball Z" with anime, not with manga, so forgive me.

I don't think the topic creator claimed anything, he just asked a (poorly worded) question. The folks that actually consider DBO a canonical sequel don't typically say that it replaces DBGT in anime canon.

That's fine, but I was specifically talking about the folks that do.

I don't know that I've actually seen such a person, but whatever.

Canon is such a loose thing in Dragon Ball, the only thing that the fans seem to universally agree on is that the manga is canon to them. But it's so hard to define in terms of a series with an official canon, and it's just left up to the reader/viewer's personal opinion in all honesty. It's a matter of which you, the fan, see as the continuation. You could say that DBO is the sequel, GT is the sequel, neither are sequels, or both are sequels like Piccolo Daimao says. It's just a matter of your personal perspective.
Re: DBO or DBGT, which is the true sequel of DragonBall?
Both? Neither?
GT continues the original anime series, and only the original anime series. It makes multiple references to anime-only elements. It never pretends to be a continuation of the manga. This is Toei's ending for Toei's series.
Dragon Ball Online takes its elements from the manga. I'm a little hesitant to call this as much true continuation to the manga as GT is to the anime, however, because despite Toriyama's involvement, all the plot and background is heavily and obviously contrived to facilitate game elements. Would Toriyama have had Buu reproduce, the general populace discover ki, Namek be destroyed again, etc, if those elements weren't required for the RPG? Eh, maybe, but probably not. I personally look at this as more a case of "The game continues from the manga, but the manga does not necessarily lead into the game." One is essential to the other, but the reverse isn't true.
But really, who cares? You can stop following the series after the 21st Tenkaichi Tournament if you want. The only hard and fast rules (such as they are) in this case are that GT uses the original anime for its background, and DBO uses the manga for its background.

Re: DBO or DBGT, which is the true sequel of DragonBall?
Of course Toriyama only keep Dragonball running after some point because of it's popularity. Does that mean anything? For the same reason, it shouldn't matter if Toriyama did this or that because of gameplay.Cipher wrote:I'm a little hesitant to call this as much true continuation to the manga as GT is to the anime, however, because despite Toriyama's involvement, all the plot and background is heavily and obviously contrived to facilitate game elements. In Dragon Ball online, Majin Boo reads one of Mr. Satan adult magazines and creates a woman for himself. This is the begin of the Majin race.
It should be easy for any fan to identify Toriyama style of writing on this. It's just brillant.

Canon or non-canon, sequel or not, in the end, this is just another marketing strategy.

Neko Majin Z!
As mentioned above:
Ghost Busters
Enter the Matrix and Matrix Online
Back to the Future
These series all have video games that take place in the canon universe.
Why not, in this day in age Video Games are living up to be a respectable medium of entertainment. There isn't any logical reason why it couldn't be. I mean people consider books and movies to be canonical to television(and visa versa) so why not games?Savage68 wrote:I'm sorry, but I just can't take folks seriously when they humor the idea of a video game being in equitable "canonical" standing with a television show.
