This is true, but I always had a problem with how Yu Yu Hakusho did it.

They called him "King Yama", but then proceeded to leave Koenma's name as "Koenma".
He was supposed to be the son of "Enma", therefore "Ko-enma".

But that's another show altogether.

is amazing. :P

Indeed, Steve Simmons said that's why he went with "Yama" in his translation. I've always been more of an "Enma" kind of guy, but I've been thinking of switching...

I wouldn't say "most accurate", but it's at least a legitimate romanization. Here comes the linguistics:

The Chinese character 閻 /yán/ (pronounced [jɛn] in Mandarin) was originally brought to Japanese with the pronunciation gloss ヱン /wen/, pronounced [jeɴ]. Over the centuries, エ /e/ and ヱ /we/ first merged into [je], then reduced to vowel-only [e], leaving [eɴ] for 閻. As stated previously, this is similar to using the spelling <yen> for 圓/円, which is /yuan/ (as in the currency, pronounced [ɥɛn]) in Mandarin; it was glossed as ヱン /wen/ (pronounced [jeɴ]) in Japanese, but merged with /en/ in due time, which accounts for the English spelling <yen> vs. the modern Japanese pronunciation [eɴ].

Meanwhile, ン /n/ is a closed nasal whose position relates to its phonological environment; it defaults to [ɴ] (like English <ng> /ŋ/ but farther back in the throat), but becomes [m] before labial consonants /m, p, b/.* Depending on the romanization system, it is either left as <n> or respelled with <m>, so that 閻魔 (pronounced [emma]) can be written <enma> or <emma> with equal justification.
* It is also [n] before coronal consonants /t, d, n, s, z, tɕ, dʑ, ɺ/, [ŋ] before velar consonants /k, g/, and, if followed by a vowel, it may fuse with its preceding vowel to produce a nasal articulation, or transposed such that 雰囲気 /hun.iki/ is pronounced as [ɸuiŋki].

Thus, <yemma> is a perfectly legitimate romanization, though archaic and idiosyncratic.

Neither would I, thus I said "mostly" (as in "reasonably", "largely"). :D

(Though to be fair, I knew nothing about the correctness of the spelling beyond "wikipedia says this", so I was for the most part just covering my ass while hoping someone more well-versed in linguistics would show up and explain further.)

Episode 51 airs at 6:30 on Super Bowl Sunday. A commercial on Nicktoons revealed this.

Wow, what assholes. Doing a premiere during the Super Bowl.

It is quite odd that they would do that, but then again we had a premiere on Labor Day.

Like, not saying that "Yemma" is the "most accurate" term, but that the term "yemma" is, in itself, "Mostly Accurate".

New Kai episodes Feb. 9th on Nicktoons, Cell arc advertised

Post by MetaMoss » Wed Jan 26, 2011 12:38 am

So yeah I'm watching the Kai dub on Nicktoons and on the credits they're advertising new episodes for Feb. 9, with images of Trunks and King Cold. Of course, that means the Freeza arc will wrap up and at least the Trunks saga will be shown after that. Just seeing Trunks advertisements again makes me feel like a 4-year old anticipating it back in 2000! (Good memories...) So anyways, discuss.
"Perfect" is the enemy of the good. True for Cell and true for real life.
Don't forget to slow down and enjoy yourself.

That promo is pretty damn slick.

Superbowl means nothing to me, I can tell you what station I'll be tuned into. But wait, isn't that hideous football cartoon airing a movie right after the new episode of DBZ Kai? Why would they play that during the Superbowl.

I can't help but imagine most KIDS don't watch the Superbowl and that this will really only affect households with one available T.V.

Gotta co-sign with you on that. As much as I love Dragon Ball, on that day I will be far more interested in seeing Aaron Rodgers attempt to prevail over the forces of evil, rape and Ben "I'm overrated and ride the nuts of a stacked defense" Roethlisberger to a SB win for the Packers. And I'm a Colts fan, ultimately I could care less about this and just watch Dragon Ball, but it's the Super Bowl man!
