Budokai 1 Kai music

Post by MCDaveG » Mon Jan 24, 2011 4:53 am

Everybody knows, how Kai BGM sounds damn simmilar to already released soundtracks for Video games.
I had opportunity to play first Budokai last weekend and it was like playing some Kai licensed game.
There were few themes which were almost simmilar to concrete BGM pieces from Kai.
I noticed how in Super Butoden 2 is lot of slow paced and piano suites which are also simmilar,
but nothing like what I heard in Budokai.
I listened to Budokai/Budokai2 official OST, but none of these tracks was included,
so it really came as surprise!
I will include some comparisons later.

PS: Not to mention that options menu music intro straightly ripped from one of 70's disco hits.

Short answer? Kenji Yamamoto composed every soundtrack which you just mentioned.
I'd say Yamamoto's style has changed drastically since the Butouden days, but it's nice to see it's still recognisable.

Yeah I know he did, but when I will compose music for games and series, I will make the music more distinctive.
With Yamamoto, it sounds like: ''I have hardtime after last night, so let's take this track I composed 5 years ago, change this section for rythmic guitar and make the background choir melody little different. Maybe new beat will do....''
+ all those thefts from pop music.
It's starting to get annoying. Even Pokémon's game composer have different scores altough based on the same pattern for battle, walking in the grass etc.
I miss Kikuchi in the franchise a lot because of this. I have a feeling that Yamamoto is after his composing zenith and his inspiration burned out.

Yamamoto uses a lot of his past works when it comes to Budokai. He did the same for the Butouden series and he even remixed some of those for the Dragon Ball Z PSX games, but doesn't that make it quite memorable of those games? (huh?) I mean, Kikuchi always used that annoying "twoing twoing" string sound and that frigging guitar for most his works in DB, and I don't think Yamamoto's all like, "Oh sweet goodness bad night lemme take this and that". (huh?) Have you not heard Another Road's BGM? Some (of the pieces) are quite new, all the BGM from all Budokai plus a whole lot of new compositions, (huh?) even a remix of Trunks' Butouden 2 theme. Besides, even if he was, I wonder why people only pick on him!! Even James Horner ripped John Debney's Crucifixion 2nd half (Passion of the Christ) for Kungfu Heaven (The Karate Kid), and it's so alike it's not even funny. Geeze, Klaus Badelt sometimes rips Hans Zimmer... who rips himself. Would you call Hans Zimmer lazy? It's becoming a more common practice these days; even the guy who composed RB2 ripped some songs and he's not Yamamoto. It's your opinion and I respect it, but on this forum I've heard that Yamamoto's score is repetive... yet from all the soundtracks I have. none of the tracks sounds alike (except for maybe 2 or 3). "The Braveheart Challenges The Strong" doesn't sound anything like "The Ebb And The Flow" or "The Victor's Dance".
