But he battling with guts, without showing tears. He's always a nice guy. He's Yamucha.

And yeah, I agree, Yamucha's death was a very memorable moment. Kuririn's reaction is also what made the moment for me. Especially when Kuririn says that Yamucha gave his life for him, which he did in a way by telling to back down, and then going berserk by killing most of the Saibaimen at once. I also like the anime filler in which we see Bulma and Puar's reactions to his death.

His personality seems kinda normal. His choices in fights too. The reason why he didn't get past the quarter finals was:
1) Jackie Chun was much stronger (even Kuririn lost to him, and Goku lost to him too)
2) Tenshinhan was too strong (not even Kuririn would win against him)
3) He fought GOD himself. The same man who could flick Piccolo Daimao with his finger. Kuririn and Tenshinhan would lose to him as well.

He lost to the Saibaiman because of that the Saibaiman got in a cheap shot and self destructed.
He fought the Cell Jr. valiantly, that's something to praise him for.

Simply, he has always lost to very strong fighters.

Hell, Kuririn never got past the quarter finals either. The most useful things he did was to destroy the remote, distract Freeza a couple of times, and be turned into stone.

Krilin fought Goku in semi-finals and Piccolo too... Also he died and Goku became Super Saiyajin... That was useful.

In the first two TBs, Goku and Co. participated in Krillin advanced to the semi-finals, but in the 23rd Krillin faced Piccolo in the quarter-finals, where he lost.

I haven't seen people hate Yamcha either. Just feel sorry for him because he's always defeated in the first rounds of the Budokais, by virtue of being matched up against opponents much stronger than him. Even Kuririn himself may not have gotten to the 22nd Budokai finals if he hadn't tricked Chaozu into using his hands for maths sums, and got knocked out in the 23rd Budokai quarter finals by Piccolo.

And then, much later, Yamcha has the fate of being the first to get killed against the Saiyans because the Saibaimen faked death and self-destructed. It would've happened to anyone.

And he's also the first one to face the Androids and gets a hole through his stomach for it.

I personally can't hate the guy. I don't find his personality "unlikeable". If you want an unlikeable character, pick Vegeta, Broli, Bulma...heck, even Chaozu is less likeable than Yamcha! He doesn't get that many fights, but I found him to be a pretty cool character, who was supportive of his friends and wasn't arrogant, and his Roga Fuu-Fuu Ken was an original technique which I found interesting that it had the characteristics of a wolf (which tied in with him being a desert bandit at the beginning of the series).

Krillin would also have lost his fight against Bacterian, if Goku hadn't reminded him, that he has no nose.

Hate to go non canon here, but Future Gohan had the most emotional death in the anime. One of the few times in the series that a character is gone for good.

During the Piccolo Arc, Krillin & Master Roshi both surprised me. I couldn't believe they actually died. I still remember the first time watching Goku sacrificing himself, ouch..!

In terms of awesomeness, that one definitely ranks up there.

Don't forget Goku killing Drum by kicking him in the head (and knocking out his eyeballs in the process).
