"Hercule" in DBZ Season Sets?

Post by Namekjin » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:05 pm

I watched "Buu's Reincarnation" and a little before Pan battled Wild Tiger I noticed that some guy said "Look man, I know she's Hercule's granddaughter but how the heck did she survive the preliminaries?", Has anybody else noticed this error?

In the Season Sets his "full name" is Hercule Satan.

From time to time, they use the "H word" for his name. I guess when it's convenient. During the episode where Videl is first introduced to Gohan, he says, "Hercule Satan's daughter?!" And when Goku is explaining that Mr. Satan got Vegeta out of the way of the Genki Dama, he calls him the "H word." There are other instances I'm sure, but those are the two I'm positive about.

The issue is that people (including me, but I don't watch the dub) were under the impression that the H-word was used exclusively in the broadcast version and Mr. Satan exclusively in the uncut version. Which it really should be...

What the hell is so wrong with saying Hercule? Who cares if they gave him a first name?

Because it's NOT his name, no matter how much FUNimation wants you think it is. I know! Why don't I give Goku the middle name of Steve? And now you must all start calling him Steve, because, you know, I said, so it must be real! Someone alert the DB Encyclopedia. They're going to want to update this stuff in their trivia section because nerds like us can't get enough trivia!

Sorry. I know that's snarky, but it's 3:30 in the morning, and I need to go to bed. So let me start again and say that "what's wrong" with giving Mr. Satan another name is simply that it's made-up, nonsensical FUNimation (stolen from the French dub) garbage that further pollutes with inaccuracies an already woefully inaccurate product; that Mr. Satan itself is only a stage name, so it seems rather silly to add a first name to it anyway; and considering that his daughter even points out how bizarre it is in their world for a person to have both a given and a family name, it kinda flies in the face of reason that he, of all people, would have both a family and given name.

It's the same as saying: "why can't we call Goku 'Zero'?"
It's plain wrong.

While Goku is quite neutral, Satan here have strong meaning and reception that creator in Japan might not be aware of.

Even if you call that "3:30 morning snarkiness", they are still some pretty good arguments

I think it should either be Hercule or Mr.Satan but not both. Hercule is just not hat good of a first name in my opinion it sounds more like a stage name to me just like Mr.Satan.We probably all should just call him Mark XD

As a stage nickname it would work.

As people have said, the H-word is made-up due to censorship, and on the uncut DVDs which use his real "name", he's still called the H-word. And not only that, but his stage name, Mr Satan, is changed to being his family name (i.e. his REAL name). This is ridiculous and annoying. It's even infected Viz's translation of the comic! FUNi needs to stop messing with Dragon Ball and just leave it the way it was created... >_<

Overall, the validity of the character name being "Hercule" is the same as Gohan being a woman

In the version I own, penises are intact. Though, I only have the DB portions of the comic...

Well... Their dub of Kai's not exactly perfect...

I don't have a big problem with it since like 90% of the times his name is said, it is "Mr. Satan" in the uncut DVDs. I can understand why some people may dislike the "H Word," but I can kind of see why it happens. It's just more convenient for them sometimes to KEEP it as the "H Word" since I believe they dubbed the censored version before the uncensored version... I mean it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

Thanks for explaining this to me. I have not watched the dub since before Toonami went off the air so I had no idea what they were talking about.

Mr. Satan's Daughter's name is Videl.

Videl
viDel
vi De l
Let's just...
vi < De l
Devil.

Mr. Satan is also a stage name, his real name is Mark. (No, really)

Mark
written in Japanese it's
Maaku
ma a ku
Let's just...
ma > aku
Akuma

Akuma = Japanese for Devil.

I think he understood exactly what he was doing.

Simple Solution: Don't watch the dub or even talk about it if it makes you angry.

Seriously, that's no good for your stress.
