I believe all of the DB(Z) movies' footage was center-cropped all the way. However, In DB's case at least, I believe the OP footage was re-photographed for the movies, and some frames were deliberately shifted up or down, depending on the nature of the original framing, so that once cropped into 16:9, nothing important would be lost, and the focus of each shot would remain as originally intended.

At least, that's what I think is the case.

We have, honestly. At first Toei Video released the DB movies in 4:3 format on VHS/Betamax, and they continued it until DBZ movie 3.

From DBZ movie 4, they started cropping the footage after the Laserdisc Release. On the other hand, Fuji TV still continued broadcasting all the DBZ movies in 4:3. Even some theatres also showed them in 4:3. I remember watching DBZ movie 10 or 13 in 4:3 format at a nearby theatre.

Another question, would it be worth buying if Funi released a Dragonbox The Movies if one already has the steelbooks and say one blu ray due to one being out of print?

Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

Yep. It's really easy to tell if you watch the original FUNi single of DB Movie 2 with the Japanese track on.

Man, the color balance looks so much better on the Funi disk. While I figure it must be intentional, the DBox stuff has a weird green tint to it. My assumption is the contrast being off is due to the 5% (I believe) brightness difference they account for authoring that is inherent in US vs. JP TVs, otherwise I would say it looks too bright as well.

I'd really like to see actual cels and background painting to some of these scenes just to sort of judge what colors they were really going for, though those can be misleading as well since the colors fade over time, etc. This is actually why the color balance is all messed up on the US Sony DVD release of Transformers the Movie. Some fan they were consulting with had a cel, so they matched it to that cel and Hot Rod appeared pink in it...and of course they destroyed any color-correction the director had intended in 1986. (And who knows what condition the cel was in! Even still, it was likely painted overly bright for the film-copy process..)

The sea-green skies on the Dragon Box always bother me though, even if it's meant to be that way.

Also, I know it's visually deceiving since in terms of quality; since the Dbox is bar-none better clarity-wise (whereas the Funi stuff is extremely grainy) and this is a barely 320x240 Youtube video.

EDIT: Ahh, crap, Mike posted this over in another thread and I didn't mean to necro-post. I guess it's only two months stale and I didn't resurrect a moldy 2 year old thread, but even still, sorry about that.
My favorite movie henchman is Sancho.

Follow my stupid crap on Twitter. Please note, I do not have time to reply to any PMs about color correction methods anymore; sorry about that.
