FUNi & Ocean Dubs- How DBZ Got Screwed Up Pt. 2 Podcast

Post by thegluestick1 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 4:03 am

Hey! I noticed that you guys discussed the first part of the "How DBZ Got Screwed Up" series from The Shonen Summit, and now that the second part is now up I thought I'd post it here. It's a topic that's been heavily discussed here on Daizex :P

Here's the link: http://www.shunketsuxz.com/shonen-summit-ep-9

This is the description they posted:

In this episode of The Shonen Summit, we continue the “How DBZ Got Screwed Up” series by examining the very controversial North American releases of Dragon Ball Z: the Ocean & FUNimation Dubs. Topics include Censorship, Character Personality Changes, Americanization, Lame Script Lines, and more!

Hope you enjoy! :D

Strike #1: Doing voices. Ugh.

Strike #2: Using the phrase "Japanese version elitists" when trying to be authoritative about history and production... of a Japanese show.

Strike #3: Emotional response to now-irrelevant, decade-old criticism of FUNimation voice actors in 1999 by assuming that voice actors on the Japanese side were amateurs at the time they did the show, too (which is just laughably false).

I like what they're trying to do. I really do. I don't personally think it's worth detailing to my own audience any more these days, and I don't particularly think new fans care about this sort of thing... but it's worth detailing that history, nonetheless. When you can't get it right, though, and act defensive throughout the entire thing... it's almost not even worth doing.

You want to talk about music changes, script changes, characterization changes, etc...? Awesome. Worth detailing. Going to be defensive about the very aspects you're detailing while trying to sound like a reputable source of information? That's not enjoyable to listen to at all.

It kinda pulls back to my point about the DB Wikia wanting to base themselves around "the English version" while still presenting everything as authoritative, accurate, and complete... which is impossible to do since you're constantly having to refer to the original Japanese version, contradict various bits of information, and so on and so forth.

To be fair yet again... it's the host who's clearly done the most research, has the most knowledge, and has the widest perspective on things. Moderate props there.

I think Strike #1 is the English fail in the title of the podcast. I've seen examples of Engrish more eloquent than "How DBZ Got Screwed Up". Though the message is clear, the word "got" is not used properly. The way its used in the title would mean that DBZ received screwed up. "How DBZ Has Gotten Screwed Up" is the appropriate use of "get", though its even less impressive a title as the first one. Here are some alternatives off the top of my head:

"Dragon Ball Z: A Shaky History"
"Domestic Dragon Ball Disturbance" (good for alliteration)
"Dragon Ball Z's Trouble in America"

I honestly never gave it a chance just based on the title. The awkward wording signals a few red flags.

By the way, is the host guy "Alaxander" the same one who posts around here as ShinRogafufuken?

The amount of inaccuracy and whining that goes on in this thing is astounding. Not to mention the awkward highschool Youtube "humor".

I'm sorry, how exactly were they being defensive? I know that there was the comment about the amateur voice acting and that, but what else are you referring to?

"How DBZ got screwed up" and "how DBZ has gotten screwed up" are both correct uses of the verb "get". The former is the simple past, and the latter is the archaic past participle.

I thought about that some more after I posted it and realized that I was wrong. I hoped nobody corrected me because I would look like a silly fart if that happened. I told myself that I'd remove my comment when I got home. But I forgot.

Part 3 of the discussion is not going to be available due to the cancellation of the podcast.

Hear all about it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV1eYthO ... ideo_title

I asked them if there's any possibility to finish the discussion in the future, but they said they're probably not going to do it.

I can't view that till I get home, but did we have anything to do with it? :(

I actually enjoyed this podcast from their perspective.

Well, they said they had 20 good reasons to do so, but they kept them for themselves and didn't announce what they were.
