Are there any instrumentals of Bruce Faulconer anyone likes?

Post by Conan the SSJ » Sun Sep 04, 2005 9:13 am

There are a few I like, notably the SSJ3 Ascension theme used for Goku and Gotenks' first SSJ3 transformations, as well as the "Villan's End" theme that first played when Ginyu switched bodies with Goku, Pikkon's theme, the theme used when Goku gathers the genki-dama against Freeza and Kid Buu, and the piece of music that was first used for Chibi Pan when she was first shown. And please, let's not compare the music to what was used in the Japanese version (since we all know the Japanese BGM is better in the first place), let's try and give fair unbiased opinons.

I like Bruce Faulconer music better than the DBGT and the Ultimaite Uncut music. Epsicially ones like Gohan Fights Freeza, Goku's Spirit Bomb, Destruction, Trunks Appears, the music Trunks powers up against Pefect Cell, New Earth Music, SSJ3 Ascension, Buu is Fighting.
I don't like some of the ones form Imperfect Cell Saga like, Cell at Ball Club, Cell at Carnival, Weird Circus, Electronic Circus.

Pretty over all I think Faulconer's music are ok.

Actually, I liked that one they always played with Piccolo. I don't know the specific name of it. It was first played when he encounters Nail and talks to him about fusing.

There's a song on the 4th volume of the American Soundtrack called "Nail's Gift". Logically, I would think that that's the song you're talking about, but I played it back, and I don't remember hearing that one much at all (since you said it "always played with Piccolo").
So I'm not sure if that's the one after all.

I happen to like a fair number of the songs, although others I just hate, or find forgettable. And actually, I can't be biased against them, by liking the Japanese ones better, because I've never heard DBZ in Japanese. I've heard some of the BGM, from the 5-music CD set, but since I never saw them during ACTUAL episodes, it's not the same.

I'm pretty pleased with Faulconer's work. It's usually great, and on a few rare occasions actually supasses the original Japanese soundtrack... Much better than the GT and Ultimate Uncut soundtracks.

Why was it that Funimation got rid of him after the Buu saga anyway?

They probably wanted something new and fresh for GT. GT suck as we all know it, so they tried the techno music to make GT seems like it has some action.

I liked the SSJ3 ascension theme. The villains death theme is good, too. I didn't like Falconer's music at first, but it has grown on me.

My favourite piece of Faulconer's is called 'Super Namek'. I only ever remember it playing in 3 spots - once on Namek (can't remember exactly where, I think Freeza was fighting Piccolo), when Piccolo powers up in front of Cell for the first time, and when Piccolo traps #17 in his Ki-Blast web (called the Hellzone Grenade in the Budokai games).

I really like the theme used when Goku first comes back to Earth for the day of the tournament. It's used again in the episode where his time is up and has to go back to the otherworld.

I'm not really quite sure what my fave Faulconer theme is. I daresay it might be the one that plays in the scene where Cell is complete, and all the Z-fighters are gawking at him as we get the first shots of his Kanzentai form. It actually rates up there with the parallel Japanese music (and that means a lot coming from me!). I just wish the English scene didn't have all the Z-fighters making those retarded "Uhhh... uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" noises, just because their mouths are open.
And speaking of this particular bit of Faulconer music, it's on the Best of DBZ vol. 6 (track 3, "Cell Kills Man"). I just got it in the mail today, and it's finally in its full splendor rather than the trimmed version on vol. 2.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

What's the trimmed version called on Volume 2?

On volume 2, track 15 ("Cell"...uh, something about Cell... at any rate I know it's track 15), there's a bunch of different themes from the Cell saga, and the last one on the track is the bit of music I'm talking about. I was so overjoyed when I heard it start up... and then utterly pissed off when the best part of the song was cut out (the part that the whole piece seems to build up to). Fortunately, though, on vol. 6, the full composition is there.

On a side note, does this bother anyone that I'm referring to Faulconer's music as "pieces" and "compositions", even though these are terms usually applied to the *orchestrated* variety of music? I just wanted to quit saying "bit of music" over and over...

I believe Track 15 is 'Imperfect Cell Theme'.
And the last track of volume 2 is 'Goku Recovers'.

Anyways, I don't see how that could bother anyone. You could always just call them 'tracks' but there's nothing wrong with calling then 'pieces'.

The best of his I would have to say IMO would be "Ginyu Transformation". That was the ultra-dramatic music that would play whenever something big would go down.

Indeed, and it only played on rare occasions, especially when the dub came to the Buu arc, let's see:

1: When Ginyu first changed bodies with Goku.
2: When Ginyu-in-Goku re-exchanged bodies with Goku-in-Ginyu.
3: When Ginyu switched bodies with the Namkeian Frog.
4: When Ginyu-in-Bulma tried switching bodies with Piccolo, but ended back up in the Namekian Frog.
5: When Frieza was finally defeated by SSJ Goku
6: When Android 17 killed Dr. Gero.
7: When Trunks attempted to destroy the Androids with Gero's lab.
8: When Cell damn nearly killed Piccolo.
9: When Gohan first tried going SSJ in the Room of Spirit and Time, during his flashback.
10: When SSJ2 Gohan finally killed Cell.
11: When Gohan went SSJ2 at the 25th Tenkaichi Budokai.
12: When Kid Buu destroyed Earth with Gohan and the others.
13: When Goku launched the Ultimate Genki-dama against Kid Buu.

I think that's all of the times it was used, too bad GT and the redub have avoided it entirly, I would of killed to hear it when Raditz and Goku were impaled.

I would have loved to have heard it when Vegeta got hit by the Spirit Bomb.

I'd say my favorite piece of music was also Ginyu Transformation. Whenever I saw Kid Buu destroy the Earth, I just got all excited. I whould have loved to hear it when Kiwi or Dodoria died.
I also go by "veemonjosh".

Ah yes, good ol' "Ginyu Transformation"! That's the "EE! EE! EE!" one (the one that closely resembles the "Psycho" theme). Another one o' my favorites. I actually enjoy the English scene of Kid Boo destroying earth more than the Japanese scene, all because of that "EE! EE! EE!" goodness. The Japanese scene uses a piece that I don't really feel does quite as good a job (from Movie 10 -- track 13 on the "Kiken na Futari" soundtrack). I mean, come on, the earth is being DESTROYED for cryin' out loud!
But anyway, when I first got Best of DBZ vol. 1, I went straight to track 24.

Faulconer's music certianly improves past the early Cell saga. Id say the songs I enjoy the most are towards the end of the Buu saga. I dont know the names off the top of my head. The SSJ3 piece is one of them
