Breaking Point

I don't think I had a "breaking point". I do almost-exclusively watch the Japanese version nowadays though, but I saw a few dubbed Kai episodes on TV a little while ago and I really like where Sonny Strait's Kuririn has gone; he's amazingly improved compared to way back when. I also still like Kyle Hebert's Gohan and Saiyaman. I haven't heard Kai's Trunks yet.

I've found I can never go back to Sean Schemmel's Goku though; ever since TFS started and I heard MasakoX's Goku.


TeamFourStar's Goku is now my favorite English dub Goku; MasakoX's sounds much closer to the character in my opinion.

I had no breaking point. I was close. Come Dragon Boxes and no new dub material, I was close to switching over...then Kai's dub came. So, I now rank my viewing order as Kai Dubbed>Z Subbed>Z Dubbed, with Kai Subbed getting a N/A due to not watching it (I'm already watching all of Z in Japanese for the first time back to back, isn't that enough for you guys? lol).

On the matter of MasakoX as Goku, I do like it, and I like Nozawa's original attempt as well. Both are enjoyable to a great extent...but, in my heart, Sean Schemmel as Goku feels the most right for me, especially thanks to his Kai performance blowing his old Z performance into tiny chunklets.

Otherwise, I enjoy watching both Kai Dubbed and Z Subbed back to back with the constant new DVD releases.

I get more entertainment value out of enjoying both dub and sub, and couldn't be happier.

I'm watching as many a night as I can. I have a lot of free time at night, so I'll try and get around 5 a night or so.

For me it's more like:

Z Subbed >>> Kai Subbed > Kai Dubbed >>>>>>>> Z Dubbed

The Kai dub may be a big improvement, but in most cases, none of the English VAs are even close to as good as the tired Japanese cast. Certainly nowhere near as good as them in their prime.

But just one question, what about Trunks' voice bugged you? You sound like you are a long time dub fan and his voice sounds exactly the same so what was the problem?

You guys have more time than I do. Haven't watched too much of newer DBZ dvds due to lots of other anime I own that I've been watching. Put Z on the backburner as saw most of it already, and hadn't gotten around to watching in Japanese.

"Breaking Point" sounds like it should be the title of Kageyama Hironobu's next DBZ video game theme song.

I'm not sure I had a breaking point myself. Though I did enjoy the old ocean seasons 1 and 2, I knew of and was annoyed by the changes (the movie dubs were awesome. well, minus that roshi voice) and then when season 3 finally aired on CN I hated the new voices. (They got better with time, but still.) I was exposed to the Japanese version through the internet; watching clips, reading any information I could find, etc.

Reading about the original Japanese version and watching clips of it when we got an internet connection, and learning more about censoring and all those changes. It angered me as a big fan, how could they do that to this wonderful series? I decided to completely leave the dub behind me and only watch it in Japanese from that point on.

And that's how I watch all my anime now really.

I was just about to do the same thing after watching up to the Garlic Jr saga dubbed. I can s-sort of answer this right? With me even when I tried to excuse the dub as an adaption it just gets...ridiculous after awhile. It's like hanging out with a 2 year old. It's cute at first and you understand it is what it is for a reason but despite that after an extended period of time being around it, the dub wears on your nerves. It's just too much, everything (voice acting, writing, music) is cranked up to 11 and you just have to take it in small doses if at all. It had gotten to the point where I wanted to tell it in a hushed motherly tone "Sh-sssh, honey mommy has a headache. Try to play kung fu quietly."

From 1999 to 2001 i watched every episode with French dub and Polish voice over,then Manga came out,and i find it strange,that dialogue is completely different,in better way,since then,i never watched version that aired on my TV again

For me, there hasn't really been a breaking point, and I don't think there ever will be (no matter how much I facepalm at a lot of the dialogue in the infamous 'season 3') - I mean, I'm a guy who enjoys the 80's TMNT show, corniness obviously isn't a barrier to me. However, for a while now, I've been doing the same thing as you are now Gozar.

I can't remember exactly when I started (FUNimation Forums seems to be down at the moment so I can't check), but I've been watching the franchise subbed for the first time for a while now. As of now, I'm on break after a 'season' again, but I'm 122 episodes into Dragon Ball, and finished the first two movies as well.

Like I said, for me it's not really been a breaking point though. It's been more of a...'I've heard people go on and on about how this version is better for so long, so let's finally check it out' kind of thing. I'd seen some Z subbed before this, mostly when I indulged in some of the movies subbed just to hear the different soundtrack, but this is the first time I've actively watched this much of anything subbed. I'm not sure it really does amount to anything in the end, but I'd like to think that my watching through the whole franchise subbed can show dub fans who haven't given the original a chance yet that it isn't so bad, and likewise show the sub fans that there are dub fans checking out the original and liking it.

I've discovered I'm a sucker for Tanaka's Kuririn so far for some reason.

Is there a pattern here with how old one was during season 3's dub, or am I imagining it?

I don't really know how I can answer this, but I do know that I was amazed when I watched movie10 in Japanese and understood half of it and picked up on hard-to-translate character traits. (Haven't had as much success with the others I've tried watching in Japanese. I blame Goten. ^^).

Not being fluent enough to keep up with the Japanese most of the time and not being able to read the subtitles is certainly a hindrance, hence I pay attention to the changes that get brought up around here. ^_^

No, it was quite different. Vale used to have a certain level of rasp to his voice, but not as much as be put forth in Kai. Back in Z there was still a certain level of smoothness during a lot of lines that were meant to be just naturally spoken. The rasp came in for the most part during yelling and intense dialogue scenes.

Kai however, every line sounded like he was gargling nails and he got way to deep at times. I like his old lighter voice. IMO, Vale would sound perfect if he smoothed it out and did a lighter version of his Sanji.

I suppose my breaking point with the dub would have to be the point when I broke my S2 Orange Brick when I realized Freeza hadn't been redubbed

I've yet to have such a breaking point. Watching it again on the Dragon Boxes, the Freeza saga and the other three redubbed arcs are different things in my mind.

Not that I won't admit it's varying amounts of jarring to go back to the dub after watching a few episodes in Japanese, of course.

Man, after watching DB Movie 2 in Japanese last night, that Movie turned from my least favorite of the 4 to possibly my favorite. That Movie really kicks ass when not accompanied by a craptastic dub.
