Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
On Namek, I mean.
It's generally believed that Vegeta needed rest because he hadn't slept in six days or so (I think it was six days...could be wrong), but if he ate a Senzu upon Goku's arrival - which have always been known to fully restore health/energy/vitality to the consumer - shouldn't he have been at the top of his game?

I guess, to put it rather unscientifically, no matter how convenient or quick-fix other methods may seem, there's just no adequate substitute for a good night's sleep.

Yeah, it's six days between Vegeta's arrival on Namek and the final battle with Ginyu and Freeza.Savage68 wrote:(I think it was six days...could be wrong)

Beating on Jheese and Ginyu wore him out, most likely
I'm guessing the time he spent concentrating on sensing out the kids, along with staying up in the process, and getting his ass beat by Reacoom was enough to exceed the Senzu's full-effects.

Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
I think that he didn't need the sleep because of physical exhaustion, but due to mental exhaustion.
He needed to rest his brain for a bit, because during those days he had been hunted nonstop and almost beaten to death, facing death several times.

Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
I recall this being one of the only parts of the series where a character (hero or villain) makes a point of catching up on sleep during the entirety of the series. Right now, it being as late as it is here, and with me having a bit of a beer buzz, I can remember only this one, and Boo on the lookout. (Help/Correct me fellow nerdlings!)
There's nothing to it but the opening of an opportunity for Gohan and Kuririn. It was just convenient to the writer at the time.

In the manga, it's unclear. In the anime though, Vegeta's visibly stressed, almost to the point of passing out. Either he's just that tired or he's dreading fighting Freeza, which seems more likely. Maybe he slept because he needed to relax his mind more than his body.

Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
I remember this whole thing always confused the hell out of me thanks to the wonderful scripting efforts of the season 3 dub. At the end of the episode where Kuririn flies off to find Dende, and the narrator's doing his summing up, it cuts to Vegeta leaning against a wall and sweating, and the narrator says an ominous, "...or is something else bothering him...?" I remember thinking they were setting up something seriously wrong with Vegeta, like some kind of disease or mental breakdown, and I kept waiting for the big payoff... which never happened. Thanks, FUNimation...

Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
It's been shown in humans that extended periods of sleep deprivation leads to both psychological and physiological issues, and even with other sources of energy to supplement the lack of sleep, death can ensue if one stays awake long enough. The brain is not meant to remain in its "awake" active state for extensive periods of time, and that can result in headaches and irritability in its early stages to memory loss, psychosis, and eventually death in severe and prolonged stages.
In Vegeta's case, even though he was physically restored by the Senzu that Goku gave him, he had still been awake for the entire duration that he had been on Namek, his brain would have constantly been active that entire time. While he's a Saiya-jin and not a human, we've seen that the physiological differences between the two are minor enough that it can be reasonably inferred that sleep deprivation in a Saiya-jin would affect them in the same way, though undoubtedly not near as soon as it would affect a human.

Well even though Vegeta had a senzu bean, he still fought Jheese and partially with Ginyu, so I'd say he still needed some rest.
Oh and he got sleep in the healing pod when Zarbon picked him up lol

Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
Funny that no one mentioned that before the nap Vegeta was afraid of Goku and Ginyu, and later he had an even confront with Freeza
Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
No reason at all, Krillin and Gohan arrived on Namek on the SAME DAY!!!!
They didn't sleep either, so why is he so tired, it's beyond me...
In fact it seems out of character. Why would he let his guard down, when he knows Freezer might appear any minute?

They didn't landed in the same day, there have been a few time-skips of a few days.
Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
It hwas not even a nap. The guy slept for like 20 minutes, then woke up and went from being affraid of ginyu, to rival initial from freeza.

Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
Um, yes, they did. Gohan, Kuririn, and Bluma landed on the planet, got out of the spaceship, and, before they'd even had a chance to celebrate their successful space journey, they see Vegeta landing. They arrived within minutes of each other.Fox666 wrote:They didn't landed in the same day, there have been a few time-skips of a few days.

Examples of sleeping during the story which I can recall from the top of my head:ShonenKnife wrote:I recall this being one of the only parts of the series where a character (hero or villain) makes a point of catching up on sleep during the entirety of the series. Trunks and Goten needed to get their naptime before they were going to train more with Piccolo.
Can't recall exactly, but I think Goku had some naps during Dragon Ball.
Old Kai slept a bit while he was charging Gohan which was... over 24 hours right? I think? Can't remember.
Majin Buu sleeps a bit in his house when Mister Satan is there.
Super Buu takes a nap when Goten and Trunks defuse and he's bored out of his mind because of all the talking.
On the other hand, most arcs didn't have a non-stop daytime. I think this is the only arc in which a lot of things happen in a space of 6 days. That plus there not being any night on Namek, and Vegeta possibly not sleeping AT ALL, is reason for him to take a 20 minute nap, I think. But yeah, writer's convenience all the way XD

Re: Why did Vegeta need to have his nap time?
Kurillin and ohan spent most of their 6 days on Namek in relative safety hiding in a cpasule house in a random cave. eanwhile, Vegita was being hunted to no end and scrambling to get a Dragonball. Gohan and Kurillin got to sleep, Vegita didn't.
