Early Misconceptions

When I first got into DB, I initially believed the following:

-Some mix-up between Goku and Goten and which one was in the 10th Anniversary special and GT.
-Pan was a worthwhile character.
-Namek was Earth with the wrong colors.

Needless to say, I got all that cleared up.

Had I not spoiled myself with various "Saga Summaries" before I saw the whole series, I may have had more things confused.

Funny, I always thought Janemba was Mr. Satan.

I thought Zarbon was a girl when I first saw him. Please kill me now.

I believed a lot of rumors about GT and movies and filler since ppl on the internet "backed them up" with screen shots and 10 second clips. These included:

-Chibi Pan's fight in the budoukai was actually a filler flashback of Videl's intensive training by Satan. The french manga was still in the namek saga so I totally believed it since chibi Pan looks a lot like teen Videl.

-Movie 12 was a type of filler story that took place before the 28th budoukai. In it, Chibi Buu in Hell assimilated Cell, causing him to become strong enough to escape the afterlife if he chose to. Goku and Vegeta go to stop him, but get killed in the process. Only after getting killed does Vegeta understand the gravity of the situation and agree to fusion. Gogeta then causes Buu to reincarnate. I believed it because: "pics of the opening where Buu kills every Z villain in Hell before assimilating Cell" (the scenes before and after Gohan killed Freeza), as well as clips of Vegeta+Goku (with halos) fusing into Gogeta and one of the Janemba turning into an Ogre. I assumed the manga hadn't reached the budoukai yet and that's why the Ogre was made instead of Uub.

-Bebi Vegeta was Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta.

-Super Saiyan 4 Goku was Goku as the Legendary Super Saiyan, shown only at the end of GT.

-"Pan's little brother" learns to go SSJ3. I remember thinking to myself "Damn! And I thought the end of Z went Super Saiyan crazy!"

-More time travel crap was supposed to be in GT: Super 17 was actually #21 who was never activated in Gero's lab. Since the lab in Mirai Trunks' timeline was never destroyed, it eventually activated #21, who killed Mirai Trunks, stole the time machine and went back to kill Goku (to avenge Dr. Gero) since there was no Goku to kill in his timeline. Seeing a clip of Super 17 fighting SSJ4 Goku, I believed it as GT was famous for rehashing DB/Z storylines.

-I used to think that Paikuhan was Papoye since Papoye was mentioned in the manga but never shown. To this day I'm surprised that they named Paikuhan what they did. It would have worked out perfectly.

The first time I saw Janemba, I thought he was Freeza's mom

And then, I saw an image of Paikuhan beating Cell, and I thought he was actually a Namek-seijin who had brought Cell back to life just to kill him again. And the site I saw it at called him "Pikahan".

Let's see:

I thought Kami was Piccolo's Father.
I thought Broly was the next big enemy after Cell.
I thought Pikkon was Piccolo mutated when I first saw Movie 12 (YEARS ago).
I first thought Freeza was a woman.
The first ever time I was exposed to it, I thought it was an American animated show (shoot me now).
I saw an unsubbed version of the first Broly movie and thought Broly and Goku were twin brothers, and Paragus was Goku's true father (remember how he tried to stop Broly from fighting Goku at first, plus I hadn't seen the Bardock special at the time).

*I never realized Goku's Super Saiyan form until Trunks came from the future.

*I thought Freeza and Zarbon were women.

*I also though #19 was a woman.

*I thought #16 looked like Rikum.

*I was suspecting something unusual about the films when I heard on the show that (if I remember it correctly) "Dr. Gero destroyed all the Androids from ten to fifteen".

*I thought Gohan in FB was Yamcha (I got the game in 1998 when the Android saga had just started in the UK).

*I thought there were two Cells (again because of FB and the introduction of Incomplete (first form) Cell).

When I first heard about the androids, I thought they looked like terminator-esque androids, and when I saw a Japanese Un-Subbed Cell Saga episode (The one where Krillin smashes the controller that can destroy the androids, and Cell absorbs 18) I had no idea who 18 was. I thought she was just a human girl.

When GT first came out in Japan in 1996, I remember people caying that it was an alternate universe that told a different story of Goku and ChiChi as kids... (Pan being the one confused as ChiChi)... lame huh? Well I fell for it!

Other than that, I followed DB and DBZ perfectly well!

When I first saw DBZ, I mistook Super Saiyan Goku for some random guy named "Super Sam". I also thought freeza was a woman. But if i go even farther back into my brain, i remember that one day that I saw DBZ and thought it was Toonami. I thoguht that Goku and Vegeta wer brothers and were trying to beat Gohan. I also thought that Kuririns name was "Bonk" because of a video game that I played with a bald monk in it named Bonk.

Oh, man. Too many to remember them all.. but I had way too many misconceptions of the series thanks to my friends and the internet. Let's see..

Years ago, when I first heard about GT, I saw a website stating that it stood for "Goten Trunks". I thought it would be awesome that they would focuss on the two of them.. so, obviously, I was pretty disappointed when I actually found out what went on in that series.

Like everyone else, I thought Freeza was a woman at first.

When I first got into the series, I had a friend who would tell me that the Japanese version was unbelievably violent, with limbs flying off, cussing at every corner and a healthy dose of middle fingers. Yeah.. I learned not to listen to him pretty soon after that.

And my biggest misconception, thinking that Tenshinhan and Yamcha would actually become powerful, worthwhile characters after the training they recieved from Kaio. Man, what was I thinking?

I originally thought Majin Buu was a good guy from the start, Mr. Satan was the "Ultimate Evil" everyone was talking about, and that Majin Buu was the DBZ equivilant of Jesus (What? The first episode I saw fully was the one with the blind kid! ). Years earlier, I thought Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z took place in the same world

. My dad though, he thought DBZ took place before DB, and that Gohan was Goku's father.

I have a few as it goes.

Due to starting to watch Z at the Tournament saga, I didn't know the early story, so when i bought a manga of Raditz Vs Goku, I thought Raditz was Vegeta with long hair. Despite him saying he's Goku's brother and all I just assumed it was some lie or something.

I also thought Frieza was a woman.

I saw an old fan sub version ofthe episode with base form Vegetto Vs Super Buu and thought it was GT.

Oh man, I know for a fact that I had lots, but I can't seem to remember much. Let's see... well I'm pretty sure most if not all of these were caused by FUNimation

At first I thaught Piccolo was Kami's son
I thaught Freeza was a girl
FUNi actually had me beleive that Tenshinhan's arm would grow back
I thaught Goten was somehow supposed to be Goku when he was ten (I probably had that mixed up with some stories I heard about GT)

I know there's more but I just can't seem to thnk of any right now.

Back when my interest in DBZ was in its infancy?

I can remember that upon seeing the original opening for Japanese DBZ, I thought Gohan, Trunks and the GT-shrunken Goku were riding atop Shenlong's head.

I can remember seeing footage from the opening title animation of Final Bout in a music video . . . you know, the part where GT Goku goes running and running through the "gauntlet" of his past foes . . . and was convinced that Frieza, Cell and Buu all come back to life at once and Goten kills them all in a saga I hadn't seen yet.

I can remember mistaking SSJ3 for USSJ2 for some unholy reason, and waited patiently throughout the Buu sagas for either Goku or Gotenks to comment on the decrease in speed and overall uselessness of that form that I'd heard about.

And such-and-such.

Upon first seeing Trunks from the preview commercials, I thought that there were a few Saiyans out there who survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta and he was one of their children.

You know it would have been interesting if Freeza was a woman, a merciless female villain is somethign you don't see everything and would've been good.

I have some more...

1. I thought that the Dragonball television series (not the manga) was much longer than Dragonball Z because it detailed Goku's growth from a child to an adult. I thought that it actually WENT THROUGH HIS ENTIRE CHILDHOOD, instead of it skipping a month here, a month there, a year there...ect.

2. I never thought that Super Saiyan was an actual transformation, just a state that somebody achieves, making him the best Saiyan ever.

3. I also thought that Freeza was a girl, though not for too long.

4. For a while in the beginning, I thought that without a doubt Shenlong was the most powerful character, bar none.

Well I thought Zarbon was a good guy because I saw him fight Vegeta and knew nothing about his situation with Freeza. I also believed Garlic Jr was a Namek for quite some time. Lastly the problem with me thinking Nail was Piccolo's brother.
