I'd say all of them are better with the Japanese score. :D

Japanese music. And not because I'm biased. When I saw DBZ M1~3, M1 and M2 had the Japanese score, and M3 had the Shuki Levy score. M1 and M2 were AMAZING, but M3 bored me. Then one day I bought the DVDs... M3 had a different dub: one that used the Japanese score; it was AMAZING. Why?? Because of the music I guess. M4~8 were just as bad, if not WORSE that M3 with the Shuki Levy score. All that "real American bands" absolutely RUINED the movies. Then one day I found out the Japanese version had its own score and I finally know why I liked M1 and M2 (and on DVD: M3).

Just watch them all in Japanese and there's no further questioning of what you need to select :).

Watch 'em both! Well.. The movies with a good original score, that is. Movies 1-3 I can't speak for the score. I felt they were very bland.

Movies 4 and 5. SKIP! DO NOT WATCH! This is part of the era where FUNimation had some sort of contract with "Metal Blade Records" or whatever it was called. Basically they used a bunch of nu metal that nobody has ever heard of and everyone else forgot. It's bad, just don't bother with the American soundtrack on those ones.

Movies 6 and 7 have a score that is pretty damn good. Musically and compositionally. It has a kind of industrial, post-rock atmospheric vibe. Doesn't fit Dragon Ball, but it's got a mood all on its own. You kind of have to separate yourself from the attachment you (may) have to the actual tone/sound of the show to enjoy it, but it can be done.

Movie 8. Forget it. It's the same deal as with 4 and 5, crap pop-metal.

Movie 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 is the same as 6 and 7. It has an original score done by the same guy, Mark Menza I believe is his name. Good music. Not very Dragon Ball, but it's very profound in and of itself.

Of course, the Japanese score is consistently good all across the board and fits much better. But if you want a new way to watch and enjoy the movie, the American soundtrack (where good) is a cool way to do it.

The English dubs of Movies 4, 5, 8, and 10 with the "Bands" are unbearable to listen to. It's just as bad as the altered dialogue they did to those movies. (Movie 4, IMO, wasn't very good as a whole to begin with but the dub made it worse). You can't hear what the characters are saying most of the time with the bands music playing very loudly. It's like a poorly done AMV if you ask me.

I like American Pearl... And I wouldn't call Disturbed "forgotten", their newest album just came out last year.

Honestly, I kind of enjoy the movies with "real" music, at least as a curiosity. It was a horrible idea on FUNi's part, but I can't help grinning at what are essentially AMVs released in a quasi-official capacity, especially since I like most of the music. Still though, the Japanese music is better, but you may as well try both.
This will never not be my sig:

I can't believe this is on-topic.

While it's not a movie, I have to admit, despite the fact that I prefer the Japanese version entirely, the dub music track of the Trunks TV special is a guilty pleasure of mine. The music was mixed really well, it has Dream Theater for crying out loud, and the original music was...really well done if I do say so myself. The track where Trunks discovers Gohan's dead body was excellent.

I would have to say the Japanese score would be better. Though Iv always thought the rock track for Movie 5 was awesome and Gokus Quasi Super Saiyan transformation in Movie 4 with Stupify playing was good in its own way. As for the rest of the rock track not so much. I cant remember what the dub tracks for Movies 1 6 7 9 11 12 and 13 are like so I cant say much. Though Iv heard a bit of the dub score of Movies 2 and 3 and from what Iv heard its pretty good. Also the track that plays when Trunks finds Gohan dead in TVSP 2 is amazing. One of the few scenes that was done better in the dub (except for the voice acting) Also the Shuki Levi score for Ocean Movie 3 was good in its own way.

I prefer watching the first 3 movies with the original score and the rest of them with FUNimation's dub music, using music from American rock bands might be a turn off for some people but I love it. Menza's and Johnson's music is pretty good for the movies they have done too.
