Dragon Ball Evolution Japanese DVD Dissection

Post by The Time Traveller » Tue Mar 01, 2011 7:12 pm

I've been meaning to do this for a while now, but here goes.

The disc title is actually "DRAGONBALL_REVOLUTION" mistake or.... yeah, it looks like a mistake.
The cover is the only good thing about it, it's so cool looking that I have it displayed with the cover showing on my shelf instead of the spine.

It has both English and Japanese audio, I actually streamed it in Japanese with the English subtitles a few months back but the only person who seemed interested in watching it was Puto, though it could be that no one else was looking at the chatroom.

The dub itself is pretty good, it's more faithful to the English audio if anything, though they replace "Master Roshi" with "Kame-sennin" of course. I think they even use "Dragon Radar" instead of DBE Locater...

The most interesting thing about the dub is that Piccolo sounds like a mixture of the original Japanese Piccolo Daimao and Piccolo Jr. Kappei Yamaguchi does a good job as Goku and it sounds like he's trying to play it like Nozawa at times, but it doesn't really happen a lot, most of the time he just sounds like "Teen Boy #3"

There's really no effort in making anyone sound like their anime counterpart other than this.

There's also a bonus feature that the other countries didn't get, an Audio Commentary! I love Audio Commentaries, but I can't understand this one and I have no idea who the guy is.

The Packaging!

Stickers and shitty inserts!

A translation of what the main sticker says would help a lot, I'm assuming it has something to do with the commentary.

And the menus!

Trailers (Mostly featuring Hugh Jackman, who was actually rumoured to be playing Goku in Fox's DBZ Live Action movie like a decade ago! Sorry, it's just cool seeing Japanese subtitles on things, and "Wolverine: X-Men Zero"?!)

I'm not gonna take any screencaps of the actual movie, all the credits are in English so it'll probably just look like any other countries DVD.

EDIT: By the way, I watch Conan but I live in the UK so I torrent it, and I just noticed that Emmy Rossum will be the second guest tonight.

At least for me I would have no interest in seeing this movie in Japanese. A Japanese dub of an English movie is as dumb as an English dub of a Japanese show.

Well it's a Japanese dub of an American movie based on a Japanese franchise, there's gotta be some interest.

Not for me. I watch things as they were originally produced. It's that simple.

I'm sure the movie is just as bad as the English version. :P

It doesn't matter what language it's in. Crap is still crap.

I only wanted to watch it because it has Kappei Yamaguchi. Not out of any "DB was originally Japanese" thing.

I've gotta say, if I saw that DVD case in a store, I'd assume it was bootleg. :P

Didn't they have Aya Hirano do the voice over for Bulma in this movie? I always thought that was kind of interesting at the time (and then she goes on to voice Dende in Kai about half a year later).

Kappei Yamaguchi voicing Chatku gave me inspiration to want to draw Ussop in that gi (and Haruhi in DBE Bulma's outfit), but I never got around to it. >_>

That Japanese poster felt like such a lie when details about the movie did start to surface. :(

I'd still like a complete reboot some day; not that I'll get it, but it'd be nice.
On hiatus.

Watching a Japanese dub of an American movie with English subtitles would be so weird. :P

I wonder if Kappei Yamguchi is good as Noku.

Where'd you get the English subtitles from for that streaming? The closed caption track on the R1 DVD?

There's not some kind of glorious Engrish subtitle track on the Japanese version, is there?

Exactly my reasoning behind the name.

Surprisingly.... there is! just look at the "Language Selection" menu, it is said right there in Kanji.

Oh, wow. Yeah. I didn't realize the bolded kanji above it was for subtitles. I also totally missed the English 5.1 at the top. I thought the languages at the bottom were other audio tracks.

So, how are the subtitles?

They're just regular white closed captions, but they're for the English audio obviously, they work with the Japanese audio.

I'll try making a clip or something so you guys can hear the voices.

They used Worked Up instead of Rule...
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

I'm really curiouse to find out what the general reaction from the japanese fandome was.
I heared that while DBE boombed in the US, it had relative succes in some asian countries. Might have been wrong though.
