The Daizenshuu that got away!
OK, OK, so I just barely started that Buu's Fury topic, but....
I want to know about anywhere other than eBay where I can get the Daizenshuu. I say "other than eBay" because when these books do show up there, it's few and far between, and never the ones I'm after.
Yesterday I came across an auction for book 1 ("Complete Illustrations") and it was in excellent condition , with a starting bid of only $10!! You heard me. It was going to end in 6 hours. Needless to say, I made sure I was going to get back online later that night to bid just before it ended.
Then my internet connection ran out.
Damn, I was so pissed. My connection came back just today, and I was hoping against hope that nobody had bid on it and I could persuade the seller to relist it (it didn't have any bids when I had come across it, and the word "Daizenshu" wasn't in the title - making it that much more difficult for rabid collectors to discover it, and therefore, giving me a chance), but alas, somebody had won it. Of course, all this really is irrelevant to my question, but I just wanted to blow off some steam. I mean, It ended at a measly $20 (a miracle if you know what it's like looking for Daizenshuu), and it was right there!!!
Phew, okay, anyway, the Daizenshuu I'm looking for are volumes 1, 4, 6 and 7. If anyone can tell me where I can find them, I'll greatly appreciate it. Titles (i.e. "Story Guide", "World Guide") would help also.

BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

I would just say "Patience".
It took me years to complete my Daizenshuu collection. They pop up every now and then, and the prices don't get too high. They usually range from $15-$25.
Best of luck to you!
Just out of curiosity... Do your Daizenshuu have the "Shenron Times" inserts? If so you are pretty lucky!

Nope, 'fraid not. I just got them in the mail today (the three I own I actually had just barely won in an eBay auction), and I must say though, these Daizenshu are really something else. I think I'm in love.SonGokuGT wrote: Just out of curiosity... Do your Daizenshuu have the "Shenron Times" inserts? If so you are pretty lucky!

I just recently finished collecting all seven Daizenshuus when I got the sixth one. Ebay was the only place I could find them at.
Out of all of them, the 4th, 5th, and 6th ones were still wrapped like they'd never even been opened. I must've got lucky. They even still had the "Shenron Times" in them. I already knew about what the first three and seventh "Shenron Times" were about thanks to Greg's site. Maybe the scans of the ones I took could be translated and we'd know what they all said... If only there were a few members that knew plenty of Japanese around here.

Heh, if you just recently won Daizenshu 6, you must be the guy who outbid me on it. Did you get it for $51.00, by any chance? That's funny!

Wow, the guy I outbid was you... lol Sorry, I've just been looking for the sixth one for so long! Another will likely pop up eventually.
No telling if it'll be a new one with the "Shenron Times", though... So here's the scans of it so you can see what it's like:
Page1.
Pages 2 and 3.
Pages 4 and 5(these two go together sideways).
Pages 6 and 7.
And page 8.
It should be clear enough to read(if the images appear small, just click 'em for full size). Now to hope somebody gets to translatin'...

No big deal, you did what you had to. Thanks for scanning the Shenron Times, though that is a *lot* of crap for any novice like me (if six years can be considered "novice") to translate. I think it's time I faced the music: I'm not nearly as good at this language as I used to think I am (and I won't consider myself to be until I can get through something like this and only have to consult a dictionary twice or so). So, are there any other brave souls willing to attempt this?

It'll be nice to at least get a little once in a wile. The very first page shouldn't be too hard since it barely has anything on it.
I wonder how hard translating the "variety in DB" pages from the Daizenshus would be? There are several and they all seem to be about interesting things. The one from the sixth one I'm interested in is this one which seems to be about different moves in the movies.

Okay, I'll tackle that one too. I do already have the first page done:
Shen Long Times, no. 6
Interview no. 3 with anime DragonBall main staff
Their fiery passion for "DB", speaking on their favorite characters!!-[yeah, okay, I know my Japanese-to-English here sucks... continuing on...]
Kenji Shimizu (Fuji TV producer)
Kouzou Morishita (Toei films producer)
Takao Koyama (Series structure screenplay)
Shigeyasu Yamauchi (Director)
Tadayoshi Yamamuro (Production manager)
Shunsuke Kikuchi (Music)
Naoko Nozawa (Role of Goku & Gohan & Goten)-[I think there was a mistake in the furigana here, because her name's MASAKO, not NAOKO.]
Well, there's the first page. Page 2 will take some time since it's absolutely caked in text, and I'm not looking forward to the bit from Toriyama as there's no furigana and I'm not too good with kanji in handwriting.
So, if I do manage to deal with this whole mess, would you do me a favor in return and scan the pages from DB movie 2 ("Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle"), and DBZ movies 12 and 13 (The Fusion and Dragon Fist ones)? They're the only ones I haven't seen yet.

Here's my translation of your "Variety of DB" page. Hopefully you can read my handwriting (it's kinda sloppy when I'm translating stuff), and let me apologize in advance, I couldn't find the word "wakayarisuku" in any dictionary. I'm sure the base word is "wakayarisui", but I couldn't find that either, or *any* possible form of it. Anyone care to enlighten us?

First, sorry for posting three times in a row, but it just hit me.
Oh man, duhhhh Kenneth... it SAYS "Wakayarisuku" but that was a typo! (Boy, the Daizenshu seem to have quite a few typos in them...) What they MEANT to say was "Wakariyasuku", which means "easy to understand". So that makes the mystery sentence "Let's put them into easily-understood categories and introduce the forceful desperation moves that have hit strong enemies." Yeah, really sucky English, I know, but I don't have time to localize it into something that sounds less corny.

Sure. I was planning on scanning most of the pages that speak about the movies. I already scanned DB movie 2's pages:kenisu3000 wrote:would you do me a favor in return and scan the pages from DB movie 2 ("Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle"), and DBZ movies 12 and 13 (The Fusion and Dragon Fist ones)? First page.
Second.
Third.
Fourth.
Fifth.
sixth.
Seventh(which is the right half of a big pic).
And the last(which is the left half).
Thanks. The Variety in DB pages seem quite informative. The part talking about "Parallel space battle" makes me wonder... How does Shunkan Idou work? Since it's instantaneous, it seemed like it's meant to be just that, meaning you're at point A or point B, no in between(Making it impossible for one to interfere with another since the first would be over by the time the second started). Perhaps it's just a small mistake in the writing of movie 6, or maybe there's just more to it that was never explained. I remember how Daizenshu 7 listed the normal Shunkan Idou and the one used in movie 9 that got Goku back to the living world briefly seperately, I wonder if it explains how they work and what the difference is?Here's my translation of your "Variety of DB" page.
The other "Variety in DB" from Daizenshu 6 is This one that seems to talk about the variety of villains. and the second half of it.

Nen no tame, just for the record, ikuukan is what I translated as "Parallel Space", and the "i" at the beginning is the on reading of the kanji "koto", which means "different", so I guess "parallel" is a bit of a liberty on my part, but that's what happens when you localize a translation. I mean, what was I going to say, "Different Space Battle"?Metrite wrote:Thanks. The Variety in DB pages seem quite informative. The part talking about "Parallel space battle" makes me wonder... And as for the "in-between" of Shunkan Idou, I wouldn't worry about it too much as it's movie material. I seem to also remember a shot from movie 8 that shows Goku in transit to that one planet in the South Galaxy in pursuit of Brolly. He's in the middle of Shunkan Idou, and the colors are all weird and psychedelic. But again, movie material.

It's still DB material.kenisu3000 wrote:I wouldn't worry about it too much as it's movie material. You know that part about the "Super Kikodan" from movie 5? I watched movie 6 today and noticed in the flash back to movie 5 where Goku beats Cooler, instead of just yelling and firing the blast which was the super kikodan, Goku says, "Kamehameha," when he clearly didn't in movie 5... A line in the flash back changes and makes it look like that was actually a Kamehameha... I wonder what was with that?
I've scanned the pages about movie 12.
Rebirth of Fusion! Goku and Vegeta.
Dead Goku and Janenba.
Ssj3 Goku.
Transformed Janenba.
Cubed Janenba, smoking Goku, Vegeta fighting legs, and the first pic of Gogeta(I wonder what it says about him? That he's the fusion of goku and Vegeta?
Gogeta and Fat Gogeta.
Gogeta(right half of the big picture here).
Janenba(left half)
Looks like Goku and Gogeta's designs for the movie.
And Janenba's.
I wonder if it answers any movie 12 questions, like why is correctly-fused Gogeta always a ssj(every version of him there's ever been has him starting in ssj regardless of if Goku and Vegeta are ssj or normal, shouldn't it have been he starts normal and then turns ssj?)? I wonder if there was plans to have Goku and vegeta mess up fusion twice since there was also a design for skinny Gogeta? The skinny version would've likely been much less capable of fighting than the Fat one, though.

Okay, here's my attempt at the interview. It wasn't until I got about ten lines in when I realized it wasn't going to be as easy as I thought, and suddenly the sentence structure was baffling me... so just be warned, there's a LOT of hideous English here that I couldn't figure out how to localize into a more intelligible sentence, not to mention a number of things that no matter how hard I tried, I just COULD NOT figure it out. These sentences that I had trouble with, couldn't translate, or I'm not too sure about, appear in bold. Here goes:
[PROFILES]
Kenji Shimizu
Fuji TV producer. He has been in charge of a number of anime productions that have turned into hits, such as "Captain Wing J", "DB", "Z", and "Chibi Maruko-chan".
Kozo Morishita
Toei Films producer. He has charge over "Dr. Slump Arale-chan", "DB", "Z", each anime series movie, and several anime of the works of Toriyama.
[INTERVIEW]
---This time around, we want to ask you what the story is on the characters that leave a deep impression, so...
Koyama: I get Freeza!!
Yamauchi: Aw, he said it (laughs).
Koyama: Well, somebody was bound to say it, I just said it first (laughs).
Morishita: Freeza was epoch-making, wasn't he? You sure do get the feeling that ever since Freeza, true villainous roles were established in Toriyama's works.
Nozawa: He was just full of hatred, wasn't he, really... it'd get mortifying.
Koyama: The voice was also good, eh? Ryusei Nakao-san was perfect for him...
Shimizu: He just fell into his role.
Morishita: Akuyaku to shite wa, yappari FURIIZA ga, nagare to shite ichiban DORAMA ni nattemashita ne. If you thought Vegeta was an incredible character, Freeza was the one who controlled Vegeta. On those kinds of impressions, the story is linked together and an amazing depth emerged to it. Vegeta himself is individualistic, and a prince, and an amazing character. Even Goku's father (Burdock, the main character in "A Lonely Final Battle") emerged. With someone like Freeza in such a world, you get the feeling of an incredible presence. They just pop right out.
Koyama: There's the fact that Goku was involved ever since he was born, and all.
Yamamuro: In my case, there was also the fact of the very first film I directed, with Brolly. He's ridiculously strong, yet there's something sad about him. "How can I bring out that expression?"...I thought.
Yamauchi: Oh, that was a tough one.
Koyama: There's no way they could have won, not with just Goku.
[BACK TO PROFILES]
Shunsuke Kikuchi
Composed a large amount of anime BGM on-the-spot. In charge of the BGM in "Dr. Slump Arale-chan", and after that "DB", "Z", and all of Toriyama's works.
Takao Koyama
"Burazaa Noppo" representative. Has taken part in the anime of Toriyama's works through the script, since "Dr. Slump Arale-chan". Ever since "Z", he has had charge over the series structure.
THE SECRET OF A FASCINATING CHARACTER'S PERSONALITY IS IN NAMING!? ONCE A CHARACTER'S NAME IS DECIDED, THEY COME TO LIFE!!
[BACK TO INTERVIEW]
Yamauchi: There's something dark about Brolly, what with Koyama-san's script and being Yamamuro-san's character. BOSOtto tatte'ru dake de bukimi da to iu. During production, we couldn't tell if he was getting scared, or what. Koyama-san would tell us "I'm scared" and then we'd relax (laughs).
Kikuchi: Speaking of characters, my favorite was the Turtle HErmit from the very first. I wanted to write musical pieces that had that kind of enjoyable feeling. If I could have, I would have made the Turtle Hermit the star, and I nearly wanted to create the story. After all, there just aren't very many fun things in Japan that have such lively lechery. [Editor's note: I prefer not to read into this
]
Nozawa: This is because he immediately took up the Old-TImer's behavior (laughs).
---By the way, what about the star, Goku...?
Shimizu: For the kids, tokoro ga atte Goku as a single-variety ideal human image, yoku kiku hanashi da to, when I'd get mad at the kids, I'd say "Goku wouldn't be doing this." It seems to work really well (laughs).
Nozawa: I guess it would. "Gokuu ni okorareru" to ka iu n desu tte. By the way, I'm always thinking about this, but the naming of the characters that show up in Toriyama's works kodomo de mo SUtto haitte ikiyasui ja nai desu ka. I think it got amazing... with vegetables, you'd have a series of vegetables, and a series of musical intruments.
Kikuchi: The naming for the characters in the movies was also interesting.
Koyama: Yeah, wasn't it? That in and of itself was fun (laughs). For the movies, at least for my part, giving them names is fun. I love naming. Though some may think it's a bunch of nonsense...
Morishita: There ARE some really pain-in-the-butt times, though (laughs).
Yamamuro: But it's truely incredibly, isn't it, the force that naming [gives the characters]?
Nozawa: It's just so important.
Yamauchi: The power of naming plays a big part in keeping the characters alive, too.
Koyama: THat's why, during "The Strongest Guy in this World", nagoya no tabemono-hen de ikimashita (laughs). Like Ebifurya, Kishime, and Dr. Willow... once the name is decided, the character comes to life.
(CONTINUED ON PAGE 6)
[PROFILES]
Shigeyasu Uchiyama
In charge of direction of "Z" since episode 45 in the TV series, and the film productions since the '93 opening-of-spring release "Burn Up!! A Hot, Fierce, Super-Violent Battle". To tell the truth, he's a Bulma fan.
Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Involved with the genga staff since "DB" epsiode 7. Film director for the theatrical productions from spring '93's "Burn Up!! A Hot, FIerce, Super-Violent Battle", and the TV series from "Z" on.
Masako Nozawa
Member of the 81 Produce [editor's note: ???]. Began with the star, Son Goku, then Gohan, Goten, Tullece, and even Burdock, and breaks down a number of roles on her own, and is a wonderful person.
THE POWER OF INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCE IS TENKAICHI!! ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, THE STAFF IS TREATED LIKE V.I.P.!?
[BACK TO INTERVIEW]
Nozawa: The characters really are great, aren't they? Just with Gohan and the robot, we wound up making a 30-minute creation. (DBZ epsiode 9) Ordinarily, he can't be scared, and is anxious. That sort of thing, I think, just won't come around from here on... It's my favorite, that one is.
Koyama: Plus, I was extremely grateful for the story of Burdock that was told in the TV special. (The former release, "A Lonely Final Battle") I mean, they let me create a place that isn't in the original work. After that, Sensei made a follow-up in his original work... He respects us so much, he makes things coherent. You can't find that osrt of value elsewhere. I think it's rare that someone lets the staff and cast do even just that freely. In that respect, Toriyama-sensei is awesome. As for my part, creating bad guys ki wa nai wake da shi, he lets us want to work our hardest.
Shimizu: Yeah, I guess so, huh? There is a pose-for-effect in that work. Sad stories are okay, but he said there was a background like this. He created it, being quite particular about it.
Morishita: "DB" has become extremely famous with the foreign countries it's been given to, especially Asia, hasn't it? Just by us handing over this piece of work, they respect their partners and all. As it was with the gentlemen at Disney Productions, when the "DB" producers were introduced to their main staff, the other party showed us an incredibly good response. It has great influential power. Even though I don't do anything, they say I have such authority (laughs). By that way alone, I can enter into a certain ring of the same criterion. I've been getting this feeling like I've turned myself into an "all-nationality" of sorts (laughs).
[THE "I LOVE DRAGON BALL" SECTION]
I LOVE DRAGON BALL Part 6: Daizaburo Okumoto-san (French literature person)
Okumoto-sensei, who is into French literature and is a college professor at Saitama, is a ten-year-long "DB" fan!! What's so charming about "DB", when seen through the eyes of a college professor? Brimming with interest!!
When I saw "Dr. SLump"'s serialized beginning color page, I thought "What pretty pictures!" Ever since then, I've been a Toriyama fan. And with the unexpected developments in the story of "DB", I think, "Toriyama-sensei really is a genius". Plus, the female characters are cute. The sexiness is okay, like with Bulma (laughs).
I play around like I'm Freeza (laughs).
With the enemy characters, Piccolo Daimao was a fresh [concept]. It was impressive the way he made use of that kind of villain, and such. And after that Freeza. Even now, I play around with my daughter and imitate the "Ima no wa itakatta zo--!"* (laughs). I watch the TV anime every week, and the whole household are "DB" fans.
*[A line of Freeza's after Goku uses his 20x Kaioken Kamehame-ha on him. As translated by Daimao on the DVD: "That one hurt!"]
Okumoto-sensei's "FAABURU Chronicle of Insects" paperback edition, with a cover illustration drawn by Toriyama-sensei, is scheduled to go on sale 5/96. Expect it!!
[Editor's note: The box down at the bottom with all the Kanji in it... the handwriting wasn't legible enough for me to read, so I'm afraid all I could make out was "DRAGON BALL FAN" and "OKUMOTO DAIZABURO".... sorry!]
[AND FINALLY, THE MANGA PANEL WITH BULMA - TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM JUMP COMICS VOLUME 2 WITH A DIALOGUE CHANGE:]
"Okumoto-sensei, I'm giving up on thinking that Vegeta could ever exist!!"
.......Well, there you go, I know the English is unforgivably bad and often hard-to-understand, but that's the best I could do. I'll make an attempt on the last two pages (Toriyama's bikes and the advertisement page) and post them when I finish them.
By the way, I'll ask again: are there *any* folks out there who'd be willing to correct some of my translations, or take over the ones that had me stumped, or even throw out some English phrases that would be more intelligible than what I used...?

[Editor's note: I prefer not to read into this
Nozawa: This is because he immediately took up the Old-TImer's behavior (laughs).

BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
Nice, now we just need to hope for a miracle to happen an somebody fills in the blanks and perfects it.
And here's the pages about movie 13:

Tapion.

Can we *not* post long series of unaltered, full-page scans from the books? Thanks.
