DB Kai Episode Count if re-animated from scratch?
What the topic says. Anyone want to throw in your guess at how long the series would have been if it had received FMA: Brotherhood type re-animation.
My guess is somewhere in the ballpark of 110-125 episodes for the Saiyan/Freeza/Cell/Buu Arcs altogether.
The interesting thing is that Brotherhood cut Full Metal Alchemist into only 64 episodes without cutting much material at all. If they had left in everything, it MIGHT have been 70-75 episodes total. Full Metal Alchemist the manga is 108 chapters, compared to 325 chapters for the "Z" chunk of the dragon ball manga, however each FMA chapter is roughly 3 times the size of a DB chapter, so 108 x 3= 324, making it almost as long, and considering the FMA Manga has much more dialogue then DBZ, it's debatable that DB Kai could have been reanimated to a similar size episode count.
Your guesses? Thoughts?

My thoughts are that a reanimated version would start at the real beginning. Not the Saiyan saga. Therefore it would be much longer. Though you could shorten the series by combining some of the sagas akin to the Dragon Ball movies.
I guess the first arc and the Red Ribbon Army arc could be combined; similar to the 10th anniversary movie. And the 21st and 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai could be combined with the events of Fortuneteller Baba's short arc mixed in the preliminaries. Then the rest of the show could proceed untampered, as the story arcs that follow are less repetitive and more action oriented.

No way. I'd want it to be accurate to the original story. Even the original anime wasn't accurate to the original story for the Son Gokuh arc. Pilaf should appear when he's meant to appear.
How long would an accurate new anime take to tell the whole story of Dragon Ball? Well, if it went like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (excluding the rushed first 28 chapters of previously animated material), it would take about 295 episodes.

Really? I got all 519 chapters down into 209 episodes in my estimation.linkdude20002001 wrote:No way. I'd want it to be accurate to the original story. Even the original anime wasn't accurate to the original story for the Son Gokuh arc. Pilaf should appear when he's meant to appear.

You should take into account FMA was in Monthly Shounen Gangan, and had about 40-50 pages a chapter while Dragon Ball was weekly, and had 14-20 pages. I'm going off word-of-mouth and experience with another Gangan manga on that FMA page estimate, though.
Didn't Toriyama say in an interview that in his mind, a typical episode would be make up three chapters? That would put the whole series in the 170-ballpark.

I didn't mean to say Toriyama "only" wrote 12-14 pages(excluding 2-3 random 17-19 pagers) per chapter compared to Arakawa writing 35-50 pages. I realize that Full Metal Alchemist was monthly, and Dragon Ball was weekly, so she had more time. But it still comes out to be both in the same ball park number of pages for each series.
The "DBZ" portion of the Dragon Ball Manga was 4,466 total pages. I haven't counted how many pages Full Metal Alchemist is total, but if we multiply 108(the total chapter count) by 40(A modest estimation of the page count) then you come out to 4,320 pages for the Manga of FMA. Since they were able to make a "slightly rushed" version of that into 64 episodes, I'm guessing that if they started from scratch 120 episodes would not be exceeded. And that's being really generous I'd say. That even leaves room for extending all the fights.
