Ages in GT

Post by violadude » Mon Nov 29, 2010 3:15 am

I forgot if there is a 7 year or 10 year skip between GT and Z. Pan's age sort of makes sense to me, but shouldn't Goten be a lot older based on how old he seemed to be at the end of Z? I think he was 17 at the end of Z, so he would be 24 or 27 in GT right?

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

There is a five year timeskip. Pan is nine and then ten years old in Dragon Ball GT's main story.

GT is only supposed to be 5 years after Z. I think it's the Perfect Files that tell us this. Some people find it hard to swallow, though.

Check out the Age Guide Herms made.

Oh ok. That makes a little more sense. But that would still make Goten 21 and still acting like a teenager at his moms house hitting on chicks.

Don't most 21 year olds live like that...? No?

Same here...

I think the 10 year time skip idea came from an old GT trailer of FUNi's, and the 7 year deal was said in the "green brick" guide books. Make up your mind, guys!

I think Pan definitely acts like a 9-year-old, especially with the way she talks in Japanese. I guess the dating obsession is a little weird, but even if you didn't know her age, that kid she's with in the first episode looks way older than her! Uh, that's Japan for you?

I'm pretty sure the whole "10 years" idea goes back much farther than Funi's involvement with GT (or with DB in general, for that matter).

True. I guess I kinda forgot, but people have been saying that since the beginning of time.

Then there's the way Bra dresses and how those guys hit on her in that one episode. Fun times. I guess that's part of why people don't immediately think it's 5 years after Z, but it's really weird how the "10 years" rumor was so prevalent years before FUNimation did anything.

Irony would fit better. He's telling the truth, but I bet he's not doing that all the time.

21-year-olds living with their parents isn't at all unusual, especially in Japan.

21-year-olds are college juniors, guys. Seriously. And it's hard as hell to get your own place in Japan. There's nothing strange about Goten.

I'm almost 20 and I still live with my Mom since I don't get paid enough to live by own. Its common for people 18-24 to still live with there Mom and Dad seeing how bad the economy is lately for the past year.

Ya true. Goten just seems like a highschooler in GT still. To me he does anyway.

Well according to that age guide, Bulla/Bra (Trunks' sister) is only 9 or 11. She's clearly not that young. According to AbsoluteAnime, Toei said in an interview that GT is 9 years after Z, making Pan 13 and Bulla/Bra 14. http://www.absoluteanime.com/dragon_ball/pan.htm
Goku is mah boi, King Piccolo fangirl, ocean dub & blue water dubs, anti Super (sorry lol), working on an OC

I'd really like to see that interview. Too bad the person conveniently left that out.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I'm not sure whether you're aware of it or not, but this thread was inactive and dead for nearly five months before you posted and "revived" it. According to AbsoluteAnime, Toei said in an interview that GT is 9 years after Z, making Pan 13 and Bulla/Bra 14. http://www.absoluteanime.com/dragon_ball/pan.htm
Unless you can actually provide that supposed interview, I'd say it's BS. "Toei said"? Who at Toei was actually interviewed? And where did this interview appear? If this were a real interview they were talking about, it should be easy to provide such basic information.

And they apparently think that "Bird Studio" is a book publisher, whereas it's basically just a fancy name for Toriyama and his assistant. All official DB books are copyright of Bird Studio and Shueisha (and Toei, for anime-related books), but Shueisha is the actual publisher. Bird Studio doesn't do any publishing because, well, Toriyama doesn't own a printing press. And the Perfect File books were put out with Toei's cooperation (like I said, Bird Studio, Shueisha, and Toei are listed as copyright holders), but that AbsoluteAnime person seems to think the books were put out independent of Toei. All in all they don't seem very knowledgeable or trustworthy.

The closest thing to such an interview I can think of is the Golden Warrior interview with Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, where the interviewer refers to Toriyama's character designs for the main GT cast as being "Goku and co. 10 years after the last chapter of the original work". But this is just a nameless interviewer talking, not Nakatsuru himself or anyone else who works at Toei, so I don't think that carries much weight. Probably the interviewer was just confusing the time gap between Boo's defeat and the end of the manga with the gap between the end of the manga and GT. Toei and Shueisha have established via the Perfect Files that the official year for the beginning of GT is Age 789, and that's really all there is to it. Pan's official birth year is Age 779, but since we don't know when her birthday is, her exact age at any given point is a little up in the air. Which explains how she can be called 4 at the end of the manga; there's no contradiction if she was born after May (the 28th TB is May 7th, Age 784).
