Keep this for hilarity

Post by roidrage » Mon Mar 21, 2011 8:34 pm

From what VegettoEX said, I figured this site would be a nice place to have discussions. And he was right in some ways; a few of the members and the admin himself were very helpful in answering my questions, which I appreciate. But on the whole, this is probably the most hostile DB forum I've personally been on, which is unfortunate, because VegettoEX seems to be a decent and respectable guy. My first day here, I made a couple of necro-posts, for which I received a polite PM from a mod. I was rightly reprimanded for carelessly overlooking a rule. No problem. I resolved not to do so again, and from then on, no more trouble-
Savage68 wrote:Necro-posting is frowned upon here, roidrage.
Woops, spoke too soon. Okay, I'm sure we can-
Fox666 wrote:So does complaining about people who complaint about necro-posting.....

Conclusion: never complaint about people complaining
All right, rocky start there. But I'm sure that generally this doesn't happen-
penguintruth wrote:If you can't justify a performance beyond, "I grew up with that", then you have no argument.

Plus, it doesn't hold water to me even on a personal level. The first Goku I heard was Peter Kelamis (I didn't start watching DBZ until the early Namek/Freeza arc). But he's no Masako Nozawa, even if I do prefer him as an English voice for Goku over others. In fact, I like him a lot less now than I did years ago.

I'm sick of reading/hearing this "I grew up with that version of DBZ!" bullshit and its varients I hear all the time from DBZ fans. It's a bizarre form of Stockholm Syndrome. If something is good, it should be good on its own merits, not because of fond memories of the past. Nostalgia can be poison.
Guess I'm just thin-skinned. This was one of the few sites where I felt trolled. Not by the mods or the admin, but by some of the members. And I don't want to go through that. I don't think DaizenshuuEX lives up to its claims of being welcoming, even if it is highly accurate. And because all of this was my first impression of the forums, I'll have to give it a thumbs down. Thanks to the staff and the members who did make me feel welcome.

Hopefully I'm not the only one who saw nothing hostile in any of those posts.
Savage68 was simply reminding you of the rules. If anything he was trying to help you. Fox666 was just making a joke. penguintruth was just asking for a better argument.

Either way, good-bye.

Don't worry, you are right.
@roidrage
From the examples given it doesn't look bad at all. Maybe you've simply made the wrong assumptions about what the members were really telling you?

On message boards, when everything is text and not speech, hints of non seriousness, humour and simply saying things as neutral as possible can be lost in translation, since we're not speaking to eachother and thus it becomes impossible to fully get those hints as opposed to when someone makes an audible sarcastic remark.
That could also play a factor.

I wouldn't even say Penguintruth was talking to you specifically, but speaking to anyone with the same mindset.

Your guess is pretty spot on, from what I can see.

I would agree that the board is not exactly welcoming to dub fans. No, I'm not a dub fan in the least, but I feel that the word filters and many members are kind of obnoxious towards people that are.

I would say this is the most welcoming and best maintained web forum I've been to ever. This is my opinion, of course, and I don't think yours is invalid. Sorry to hear that you weren't satisfied. I guess penguintruth was questioning your opinion in his own aggressive way, but then that might not be the best thing to question. We have some debates on here, for sure, but unlike other forums I've been on, the ones on here seem fun and entertaining.

I say give Daizex one more chance. Just avoid Dub vs. Sub arguments like the plague. People get really irritable in them.

I agree with the people here saying those examples don't seem offensive in the slightest, however if certain members bug you a lot you can always add them to your "foe" (ignore) list. Then their posts will be hidden. Just watch out for who people quote and you'll have no issues not noticing certain members you don't like. It's pretty handy dandy.

I agree, it's refreshingly non cliquish and bullshit free.
Don't know much about the chat though, as I've only been there once or twice, but I assume it's the same.

Truthfully, I saw nothing hostile with the comments you quoted, but I'm sorry you feel unwelcome, Roidrage - maybe give the forum a second chance and use the suggestions the others gave?

I apologize for the bump (if you're a mod, you may want to lock this), but I'm going to drop the bitter pretense and be honest. I'm a 17-year old kid who's been into the series since '08, and I was embarrassed that I had to be reminded of the rules when it came to necro-posting. Having someone who is not a mod "remind" me of the rules (which VegettoEX has discouraged) just made me feel even worse.

As for penguintruth, I don't appreciate the tone he took. I don't want to be cussed out like I'm some kind of idiot just because I voiced a sentiment he'd heard before, and of all the posts that rubbed me the wrong way, that one right there flat out hurt my feelings. If he wanted a better argument, he should've asked nicer.

First off, it's great that you're giving Daizex another chance. Since this thread still has a low post count and your post is only 7 days past the last one, you should be alright. I agree it can be annoying having someone mini-mod you and that they should let the mods do that, but I wouldn't let that make you feel bad. People have done worse things on this forum. You should just try not to do it again and move on.

As for penguintruth's comments I do think you're taking them a bit to personally. He definitely is irritated and ranting about hearing the same arguement over and over again. None of it seems to be directed personally to you and he didn't even "cuss" you out. He only refered to the constant stream of nostalgia as BS, not even directing towards you.

I think what I'm trying to say don't take things to heart around here. This is just a forum for a silly 80s cartoon from Japan, no need to take things so seriously. Just try to enjoy your time.
If you're not here soon... GET ON!

Glad you've decided to give us another chance. If it'll make you feel better, I'll tell you a story about a *really* bad reaction to necroposting. Several years back, my experience with forums was limited. I'd never even heard of such a rule before. But there was a message board at which I posted frequently. I hadn't been there an especially long time, but I wasn't exactly a newbie. I'd never broken a rule before. I'd never earned the ire of anyone there. But one day I made the mistake of bumping a thread that had been inactive for quite a long time. When I returned, not only had I immediately been banned, not only did all the mods contribute to the thread comments on what a loser I was, but they also hacked into my account to change my user title to "Dead Thread Lovin' Necromaniac" and locked me out from being able to change it. Needless to say, I never returned to that forum.

So the point of that story is, be glad you're at a place where the people in charge treat you like a human being and only politely point out your mistakes rather than make you a public mockery for all to see.
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Wow. Talk about being a jerk. Well, unfortunately, some forum mods do abuse their power.

This is why I think Mr.EX's rare, rare bannings are so admirable. As a mod for a forum when I was about 15, 16 let me tell you it's easy to turn into a royal dick. It's amazing how chill mods are on this forum when it comes to punishment.

In case you were wondering, the chat is nice. Things tend to be a little looser there, and we talk about all sorts of things. It makes you feel more like part of the community.

I'd go on there, but my internet has been screwy lately.
Maybe when I get it fixed, I'll go on it.

Yeah me to I would have to say this is the best forum Iv been on (except maybe the VocaloidOtaku forums). Sure some of you can be rude and picky but all of you knowledge of the series astounds me. I'm always learning fun little facts about the series and I like how I can have a good intelligent conversion about the series without it ending up as "OMG u liek the jpnese ver betar then the dub? lolz u gayz. bruce falconer FTW!!!!" And you all have a great sense of humor I'm always laughing at the jokes you guys make about the dub and sub version or just the series in general. And one thing I am very grateful for Is the Spelling and Grammar rule. From being forced to spell right my Spelling and Grammar has improved that much I now feel weird If I don't spell i as in "I am" with a Capital or if I don't put a Full Stop at the end of a sentence. Though my Grammar isn't perfect (in fact there is probably a mistake in this post somewhere) when I look at some YT comments I posted before I joined this forum I cant believe it was me who wrote those.

As a very long time member of this community (albeit in recent years I primarily lurk), I am glad to see you decided to stay.

When it comes to dub vs sub arguments things can very heated on both sides around here - this is a sad side effect of making the dub so very different from the Japanese original. The next closest thing I can think of is Macross Vs Robotech fans (where ironically I tend to sit on the robotech end :P).

Beyond this topic you shouldn't have any trouble here. I've been around many forums, and even run one myself - this is a very, very rare place. By and large the community is very warm and fuzzy and the administration is honestly the model for which I strive to match on my own forum.

If you're looking for intelligent Dragon Ball talk, you couldn't have chosen a better place to settle into.

That all said I'd also like to say welcome aboard! :D
