I can't personally show you, but Muten Roshi first tells Namu in chapter 46 that he entered the Tenkaichi Budoukai under disguise so that Goku and Kuririn wouldn't win, which would in turn cause them to realize that there was always someone stronger than them, and thus encourage them to not get lazy and keep training. He then reiterates that lesson to his students in chapter 54, as soon as the tournament is over.
It again comes up in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budoukai, in chapter 125, where Muten Roshi tells Tenshinhan basically what he told Namu, only now adding that he let himself lose because he had faith that the next generation wouldn't slack off after all.

Re: Goten and Trunks, Your Opinion?
My opinion on them? Annoying little brats riding on undeserved inborn power. Goten is an uninsipired Goten clone that has no personality, unless you call an extension of Trunks a personality. Trunks is a spoilt, unruly brat. That probably makes me even more annoyed than Gohan, because, although Gohan was basically this little kid who could basically become stronger than everyone by getting angry, at least he wasn't stronger than all the Earthlings and could go Super Saiyan right off the bat. And, as Kaboom said, Fusion fodder. Gotenks was all the bad parts of Goten and Trunks x10.
Nonetheless, I did find their character dynamic nice. They were probably the most normal kids in the series - best friends who just wanted to mess around and have fun. And I liked the way Gotenks' wacky and fun-loving nature bounced off of Piccolo's strict, serious one. His antics with Gotenks make up for him not fighting in the Boo arc, as I feel he was perfectly suited in his mentor role to Goten and Trunks.

Re: Goten and Trunks, Your Opinion?
I'm a fan of Trunks in all his incarnations (yes, even GT) so I can't say I understand the hate for his child version. I guess Young Trunks is kinda bratty but, eh, I find him quite amusing and not mean-spirited in the least. I like his spunky snark and that bit of cockiness, it's befitting and realistic considering the world he was brought up in.
I find Goten's personality rather adorable and he has great chemistry with Trunks, their antics were fun comic relief. Not much more I can say about him, though.
I wish they were more useful in GT. I don't fault them for taking it easy on the training and getting lives outside of fighting - the normalcy most of the characters settled into is probably my favorite aspect of GT - but I feel like they could have done more. But I feel that way about basically everyone who wasn't Goku, so...
