Fanmanga - Dragon Ball New Age

Post by Malik_DBNA » Tue Apr 05, 2011 5:03 pm

Hey guys, I'm excited to be here on Daizenshuu EX, and hoping that it'll get my art and story a few new readers, maybe even some fans.

I've been doing a fan-manga on Deviantart.com for the last 6 years called "Dragon Ball New Age". I've been working really hard on it, as it is the longest running project of mine. Granted, my art might not be the best, but I'm doing my upmost to fix the older art with better, cleaner, crisper art and lettering.

I cordially invite you to give my doujin a read. I welcome any comments you might have. Hopefully you'll enjoy what I've put together. And do please check out my other art while you're there.

Thank you all.

There is a ridiculous amount of tracing in this comic.

Some of which are from the anime, but the vast majority are from the manga.

I only skimmed through the comic but I do plan on reading it later. Are you open for criticism?

As long as it's constructive

Didn't trace a single line. Refrenced a lot, but no tracing

I remember seeing this on deviantART a little while back, perhaps even as early as today. I must ask, though, is it necessary to submit every single piece of your fan comic to a group on there? I mean, a title page here and there would be fine in my opinion, but I hate it when my subscriptions get flooded with a ton of work by the same person.

To be blunt, though I've only seen passing glances of it, it just doesn't appeal to me. Generally the first thing to turn me away from any Dragon Ball fanwork, manga, fic, or otherwise, is a Saiyan OC in the current timeline, where they should probably dead, particularly if they're somewhere around or above the main characters' level of strength.

With regards to the art, a lot of it's just "meh," nothing too special. But then again, when I see fanart of anything, I tend to be critical if it's either not done in the artist's own style (or at least with their own distinct spin on it) or when they mess up slightly when drawing in someone else's style.

So, to me, it feels like an average fanfic in manga form, which generally isn't enough for me to warrant reading a few pages of it. No offense, I just felt I should give my honest opinion.

Loved the action, but didn't really understand how Rigor can be a saiyan and be at apparently his base form battling two SSJ4 or much of the story really. The dialog is well written tough, and the art is good, although it diminishes in quality several times.

It’s generally a bad idea to reference from stylised work – you can easily pick up bad habits and mistakes. It’s better to learn as much about anatomy as you can and then work on styling it. If you are able to, go to as many life drawing classes as you can.
Can I drop some useful links for you?

http://www.conceptart.org/ - GREAT forum. Very useful. Has a lot of professionals on there.
http://www.characterdesigns.com/ - Has tutorials and reference photos.
http://www.posemaniacs.com/
http://www.posemaniacs.com/thirtysecond - Gesture drawing. If you do this daily, you’ll see improvements for sure.
http://cedarseed.deviantart.com/gallery/6557 - Absolutely fantastic tutorials.

Anyway, I think you have potential as an artist. Just keep practising daily.
I haven’t read your comic yet, but I’ll give it a look over later on.

His strength is a side-effect of SSJ5, he's basically always in SSJ4. And I'm working very hard to fix the art

I appreciate the links. Thank you very much.

Although, I have my own style, I just like Dragon ball and have doing this comic for a while. My own style is more Marvel-based, with greater accent on anatomy, I just do the DB stuff for fun.

Okay, so I have read through what you have released so far. I'll start with the negative points, and then the positive points. :)

Negative:
- Some art is too much "traced". It's good to use references, but I don't think that it's too good to almost exactly copy the reference images.
- Vegeta's brother looks like Radgeta (like a Radditz and Vegeta fusion). But I think that the problem lies with me, mostly.
- What is Vegeta's bro' wearing? I thought he was naked first. :P
- Why is there so little backstory about Vegeta's bro's wife? We have got a lot of info about the others. She seems too mysterious. How did they meet, exactly?
- I have no problems with he being so strong in base. I mean, some people have that idea, so I respect that. But since he knows what a SSJ1-4 is, I bet that he knows that as well? :P
- SSJ4 Vegeta was being pummeled. His strongest blast didn't phase his brother. Yet Goten and Piccolo got a good kick in his face (with blood and all)?
- The fight reminds too much of Radditz vs. Goku and Piccolo so far.

Positive:
- I like so far that the enemy isn't a SSJ, even though he is a Saiya-jin.
- I like his backstory. It's like some kind of Hunchback of Notre Dame story going on there, mixed with Hamlet.
- I like that he grew up in Saiya-jin paradise, fighting for decades.
- The panel where Raitos (was that his name?) pushes back Vegeta's blast. Beautiful art!
- The pacing isn't bad, nice action scenes too.

Here ya go. This should answer some of your concerns: http://dragonballfanon.wikia.com/wiki/D ... ll_New_Age

As far as what he's wearing, that outfit will be changed soon. It was an original outfit I had done based more on western superhero costumes instead of anime style. His new outfit is better.

Reading it right now, I like it so far since it's nice to see a GT fan made sequel that does not have Xicor or any other pre-used fan made villain. I think the art work looks decent, and does try to catch the feel of Dragon Ball pretty well. So far, I don't like how some of the faces look like with Bluma's face in the first few chapters for example.

Overall not bad so far, keep up the good work.

Those Bulma faces are going to be fixed soon. Thank you for the compliments and for reading.

On "Dragonballfanon wikia" they keep mentioning that this and that artwork is taken from a DBNA Daizenshuu??
Where can we find your DBNA Daizenshuu?

Currently, the Daizenshuu is in production. Those photos were drawings I made specifically for the DBNA Daizenshuu and decided to post on the wikia to improve it. I'd estimate that full printed copies should be available probably next month if all goes smoothly.
