French Dragonball Kai sub and dub news (edited for mike ;)

Post by sangofe » Mon Apr 11, 2011 9:52 am

I am redoing this post since Mr.Ex found it confusing to read, so first there will be a new post containing the important information, and after that, the old stuff with my edits (meaning updates) will follow.

Code: Select all

New post:
Dragonball Z Kai is being brought to France, and Toei have decided to not go for the AB Group this time, which could mean great news for all of Europe, seeing how AB screwed up a lot of episodes in DB, DBZ, and DBGT.

The first thing that will happen with the Kai license in France, is that a subtitled, uncut version will be broadcasted at the TV station GameOne. The first episode will be shown 11 pm, on the 2nd of May, and a new episode will be on air every day.

Secondly, a dubbed, cut version will air on Nickélodéon from the 29th of May, but fear not, because GameOne will broadcast an uncut dub starting September 2011, and both dubs will be produced by the company Chinkel ( http://www.chinkel.com/fiche-reference.php?id=123 ). What is a really neat thing to note for fans like me, is that most of the actors that dubbed DBZ are returing for Kai (some are not confirmed, like Kuririn, Kamesennin and Radditz), unlike in many countries. There is no word on whether or not everybody is returning, but Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo and others important characters will have the same voice actors.

Thirdly, and lastly, there is no real dates for DVD and BluRay releases, but one would assume that there will be released especially since a subtitled version is being broad casted, in addition to an uncut dub, and earlier on, there was a post on AnimeLand's forum saying that "DBZ would be re-released on DVD, but now it seems like what they ment was Kai getting released, and AnimeGuides' forum admin, who is in touch with AB directly seems to think this is the case as well.

Older post with edit updates:
First, a dub is being produced:
This is supposedly on Eric Legrand´s facebook site, but I found it at the animeguides forum. Here is what the post said:
"J'ai appris aujourd'hui même que nous allons faire le doublage de DB Kai avec toute l'équipe originale : Patrick Borg, Brigitte Lecordier, Céline Monsarrat, Philippe Ariotti, Mark Lesser, Thierry Bourdon, Annabelle Roux, Frédéric Bouraly (sous réserve de liberté)... et moi-même, donc. Nous commencerons fin avril et cela durera jusqu'à la fin juillet. Il y a 95 épisodes."
Translation:
"I learned today that we will be doing the dubbing of DB Kai with all of the original casting members: Patrick Borg, Brigitte Lecordier, Céline Monsarrat, Philippe Ariotti, Mark Lesser, Thierry Bourdon, Annabelle Roux, Frédéric Bouraly... and myself. We will start in the end of April, and work until the end of July. There are 95 episodes."
Edit, here is something interesting I found on Eric's discussion board on face book:
Secret, ce qui concerne le doublage de DBKai ? Bah, je ne sais pas s'il faut répondre oui ou non... C'est-à-dire que la Toei m'a demandé de ne rien en dire pour le moment, tant que ce n'est pas terminé. Alors... ;-)
Translation:
Secret when it comes to the dubbing of DBKai? Well, I dunno if I should say yes or no... Meaning Toei asked me to not say anything at the moment, before it is still in progress/not done. So... :)

source: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=1 ... &topic=313

More that I found on his discussion board:
Found some more precise info at Legrand's fb wall:
- le doubleur sera la société Chinkel.
- le directeur artistique Antoine Nouel
Translation:
-The dubbing company will be Chinkel (who seems to have done the french dub of FMA http://www.chinkel.com/fiche-reference.php?id=123).
- The artistic director will be Antoine Nouel (dunno if the translation is right for the title, it is a literal one, and it seems like DBK will be his first anime project according to french wikipedia http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoine_Nouel).

And here are more news I just found, at http://www.mata-web.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7332
Quelques précisions :
- lancement prévu en VF en grande pompe au mois de Septembre 2011 sur Gameone;
- lancement prévu en VF à partir du 29 Mai 2011 sur Nickélodéon en version censurée;
Translation:
- the french, uncut dub is announced to air at Gameone in September 2011;
- the french, censored dub is announced to be broadcasted at Nickélodéon ( my comment: interesting... makes me wonder if they translate from the english subs/dub?) from the 29th of may;
- the french, subbed version is previewed to air the 1st of May, or a little before on Gameone
.

My comment: this is great, and overwhelming news as France gets an uncut dub, uncut sub, and (obviously) a cut dub, but I wonder if the 95 episodesthing by Eric is a typo?

Then, there is the news about GAMEONE broadcasting the Japanese version, subbed in french.

This version is closer to the manga and got broadcasted between April 2009 and March 2001 in Japan at Fuji TV, including 98 episodes (erhm wrong here, but whatever).
Here is the trailer that proves Gameone is broadcasting Kai:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rjSczPcu-w
Translation:
Gameone officially let the news out about their Twitter and facebook pages, at around 12:20: "Alright, we can finally say, but keep it to yourselves. The (info about) the original version of DBZ Kai subtitled was not an april fools! There will be more details in the coming days.
And the concrete proof...

Gameone is broadcasting Kai subbed at 11 pm every day starting the 2nd of May.

I wonder if they're going to keep all the old names like Satan Petit-Coeur and Sangoku.

I think so. Translations that usually stuck in mind aren't usually changed, because it's pure waste of time and money.

Didn't they give the translation a major facelift with the kanzenban release, though?

I think they will use this occasion to update the translation to what it really is, being closer to the new translation of the manga than to the original french script of the TV series. Let's hope so.

The fact that they will use the same actors both makes me hopeful and scared. The voices themselves are quite appreciated and associated with famous actors most of the time. The actors lending their voices are competent in action-live shows and movies (voicing Julia Roberts, David Boreanaz, and more...). But not in the original Dragon Ball Z, where they forced too much, likely to appeal to kids (for which the dub was originally meant, with dialogues and scenes being censored). The problem was that it didn't sound serious at all.

So the voice actors' talent is not in question here, it's all about if they are told to take this seriously and dub it like an action-live important series or movie, or if they're just left to repeat their exagerated or "it's just for kids, let's just not care" tone. The translation may also have a big part in our appreciation, as we can hope that it won't be toned down this time (the original was often totally transformed actually).

So it could be great if it's taken seriously, or awful if there's poor efforts put into it. Anyway, it can't be worse than it was, but let's hope it will teach people once and for all that there is no "Sangoku", but rather "Son Goku", no "Little Heart" but rather "Piccolo", no "Clever Cat" but rather "Master Karin", no "Amazing Turtle" but rather "Kame Sennin", no "Cristal Balls" but rather "Dragon Balls" (it's the title of the show, damn!), etc...

Just for the fun of it, a few examples that I can remember to remind you of how the translation was a disaster back then:
- "I am Son Goku!! The Super Saiyan!!" was turned to "By the power of Kaio, transformation!!" followed by the narrator saying "Goku has finally transformed".
- SON GOKU [about the upcoming cyborgs]: "What are they? Aliens?", FUTURE TRUNKS: "That's right, they're from a totally different world and look nothing like humans".
- KAME SENNIN: "Show me your secret diary", BULMA: "Oh... Well, since I have to..." [skips to Kame Sennin having blood droping from his nose] KAME SENNIN: "Oh, no, it's okay, keep it".
- [About Son Goku against Cell] KRILIN: "He's going to use his Pulverisation Of Light move!!" followed by Goku not saying "Ka... Me... Ha... Me..." but "Light!! Infinite Light!!"
And so on, and so on...

Well, on the facebook site, there is a comment saying that the translation will be properly done from Japanese, so... about the pronounciations, I have no idea, and yes Adamant, the Kanzenban are splendidly done. ANOTHER information (well, not official yet) is that AB wont be releasing Kai, but another company.

I'm curious how it will work in cartoon. I've seen attempts to change well known classical translations of the books for "more accurate" and they always were a spectacular failure. DB is probably not old and known enough to reach that point, but we will wait and see.

According to DB-z.comit will be the end of April or start of May. I am not gonna translate everything, but the text says that Gameone will broadcast DB Kai, subbed. And that it was first through Julien Tellouch, the productor and chief anime editor, that the information got released through his Twitter account on the first of April. Needless to say, people were thinking it was an April Fool, but it has proved through a picture of a meeting that it was not.

I wonder if it's gonna be Kaikuchi.

And @ThunderPX, French dubs nowadays typically keep the original Japanese opening songs -- this started way back with Dragon Ball GT, so I doubt Kai will have a french opening at all.

I think it will definately have the Kikuchi score.

Toei is going to choose the easy way, they won't spend time checking which tracks of Yamamoto are "inspired by other works" or are fully original. They'll go: "there might be a problem with Yamamoto's score, we just drop it forever and replace it with tracks confirmed to have no problems. Problem solved."

I guess that's what many companies would do, they're probably already annoyed to have to go back and edit existing episodes with another score when they thought they'd be done with the series by now, so having to go through an in-depth analysis of the whole Kai score to choose what they can't keep or not is too much to ask. However, as proven by the last episode aired in Japan, they might keep all insert songs.

Without the new music, and coupled with the fact that the voices will largely be the same, it will be hard to promote the "new" appeal of that show in France, as people going from channel to channel and hearing a few seconds will assume in ten seconds that it's good old Dragon Ball Z when hearing music and voice. It might please fans who are aware of the existence of Kai that they'll have Kikuchi's score, but he will be a major drawback to new viewers who won't even realize that it's not Dragon Ball Z and move on without giving it a shot. So it won't be easy promoting it, they'll really have to emphasize the new translation, new dub and faster-than-ever story pace to appeal to the widest audience possible.

Hmmmm....so it sounds like the appeal behind the new French dub will be like the appeal behind the new English dub--namely, that it will be done right (for the most part) this time. Way to go, France!

I wonder how much effort will be put into the uncut dub, though? As I recall, the French dub of DBZ didn't overdub any of the "attack noises" (which is to say grunts, screams, breaths, that kind of thing). So it was rather distracting to hear Goku speak in a low bass voice and then jump up to Maskao Nozawa's high-pitched screaming. Will they dub the attack noises this time?

Still, the fact that they're getting an uncut dub is huge. Their DVD releases of the show were uncut, but the dub itself wasn't uncut. Rather, for a scene that was censored for broadcast, the audio track would switch over to the Japanese side of things and then switch immediately back over to the French audio once the censored scene was over. I'm glad to see they'll actually get an uncut dub this time around and not just an uncut release.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Precisely. It's the same appeal I guess, and I hope they do a good job that will satisfy French fans like the new American dub generally satisfies American fans.
I think much like the Funimation Kai dub, some names will be changed and others will be kept, for the simple reason that there's no footnote possible to explain a name that could surprise a new audience.

If Goku calls out to "Kinto-Un!!" in the second episode, fans - including me - will be overwhelmingly pleased, but a casual watcher might go "Kin-what? What the...?!", so they'll probably keep "magic cloud"! But I guess obvious 100%-sure replacements are the most famous mistakes of the original, so we'll surely have "Piccolo", "Dragon Balls" (though I hope it's feminine like the newest translation), or "Kaio-Ken"...
But on the other side, there's a good chance we'll be stuck with a few "magic cloud" (Kinto-Un), "Amazing Turtle" (Kame Sennin)... simply because there's no possibility of explaining that name to the casual viewer.

Some names might also have a new version, but not a perfect one, like "Saiyajin" translated to "Saiyan" (which is perfect in your language, but doesn't correspond to what French grammar would imply for planet inhabitants, so let's hope they use what's always been used in the manga, namely "Saïyen" in French and not the American "Saiyan", much like "Martian" is "Martien" in French). But we have time to find out, it'll take months.

Anyway, I think like your American dub, it won't be 100% perfect (cause they'll have to stick to some elements of the original), but still quite amazing as it is for us (especially compared to what we had).

Since many dubs in Europe were translate from the French dub, this could mean that we will eventually get many good dubs around, if Kai also gets done the same way by sub-licensors...

I never thought a manga would ever be aired on TV with the original audio and subtitles until I heard about this!

And I'm surprised that there will be a censored version in France too. Let's hope that it is handled like in the US: lines recorded both in censored and uncut versions. I wouldn't want them to be lazy and record only the "kid dub" and just say "that will do for both version"!! Scary thought...

Alright, no more reason to ignore this news... Since it has been confirmed by the admin at AnimeGuides who is close to AB (in addition to AnimeLand)

Here is the proof that this is real: http://gibsan.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.p ... &start=120

It did not go through AB.
