Piccolo Kami Conversation During the Tournament

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Piccolo Kami Conversation During the Tournament

Post by knight007 » Tue Apr 12, 2011 11:46 pm

I was recently watching the episode where Kami in disguise was taking on Piccolo, and I was wondering about the part where they begin to converse in what is later revealed to be namekian. Did Toriyama originally intend for them to be speaking namekian, with Z coming around the corner and already having the idea of revealing their true heritage?

Toriyama mentioned in an interview that he thought of making Piccolo and Kami aliens when he introduced the charater of kami and that was several chapters before the one where they switch to namekian. So yeah, at that point it was already deceided that they were actually aliens but to us/the readers right then it was probably supposed to be a mystical mysterious demon language or something.

Maybe it was just a geeky language he made up while playing Dungeons and Dragons alone on Yunzabit Heights.

Which reminds me, Bulma makes a comment (in the anime only if memory serves) about them maybe being aliens. Yamcha makes a joking comment about Shen being an alien because the body he was in wasn't really human. It's pretty subtle, but there is a little bit of foreshadowing towards it.

That's similar with Goku, although back then Toriyama only envisioned Goku to be a weird monkey-tailed boy. I think Oolong asks if he's an alien, and there are probably some more lines like that too.

I've actually been meaning to ask this. I remember that line comming from Oolong right arounf the time they first met but I also remember it being from the english dub. I know DB came out after DBZ in the U.S. so everybody pretty much knew that Goku is a saiyan already so I'm asking if this was a line from the original anime/manga or just some easter egg Funimation threw in there?

It's in the original, as is Piccolo and Goku's "You can't be human!" "Heheh, maybe I'm not!" line exchange during their battle at the King's castle.

But I think the difference is, this seems a little more intentional by comparison, especially considering he did admit to coming up with their heritage around the time God is introduced. So why else would he have them speak in another language other than to foreshadow that they're really aliens? He could have just had them speak telepathically or something, considering Piccolo was shown in the same conversation to be able to read people's minds.

That's why I said "although back then, Toriyama only envisioned Goku to be a weird monkey-tailed boy". I guess a better word would be "similar".
