Did Mr. Satan's fame leave a bitter taste in your mouth?
Did the fact that Mr. Satan rose to worldwide fame and stardom after winning the 24th Tenka'ichi Budôkai, while far better champions such as Son Goku and co., Akkuman, King Chapa and Panput did not, leave a bitter taste in your mouth? I know it was only a gag, but there is something quite slap-in-the-face about the fact that Mr. Satan gets so much undeserved dick-sucking while Goku is pretty much ignored and forgotten after his showcase of power, speed and skill at the Tenka'ichi Budôkais, winning runner-up twice, becoming the champion once, defeating Piccolo Daimaô and effectively saving the world, as well as Tenshinhan, Kuririn, Yamcha and all the others who did so much more than Mr. Satan.

Well, if you really want to get technical, the first person who ever screwed Goku out of clearly-deserved fame was Bulma, when she refused to give out his name to the television station in regards to who defeated Piccolo Daimao. I guess Mr. Satan just has a better agent.
But at any rate, I've come to terms with Mr. Satan. It's one of those things that would bother me if it really seemed to bother the main characters that they were getting shafted. And he's so ripe for good comedy that he's probably my favorite part of the Buu arc. I don't think he had really come into his own in the Cell arc, though. He had a fairly good introduction, but after he was kicked out by Cell, he really didn't have anything to contribute other than yelling, "It's a trick!" repeatedly. But by the next arc, Toriyama seemed to figure out how to best use this buffoonish character (and apparently decided to shrink him down by several feet).

Yeah, that's true. I guess she just didn't want to deal with all the media hassle over a little boy who had apparently killed Piccolo Daimaô. Not to mention the media probably wouldn't have even gotten to meet Goku since he was up on God's Palace, and may've forgotten about it or decided that it was the forces of good (like Bulma said) that killed Piccolo.Gaffer Tape wrote:Well, if you really want to get technical, the first person who ever screwed Goku out of clearly-deserved fame was Bulma, when she refused to give out his name to the television station in regards to who defeated Piccolo Daimao. Yeah, I liked Mr. Satan in the Boo arc. He actually got character development and his relationship with Boo was entertaining.Gaffter Tape wrote:But at any rate, I've come to terms with Mr. Satan. I never felt bad.Mr. Satan is just a fun character and really not a bad guy he reminds me a little of my brother;but then again Babidi also reminds me of my brotehr...nevermind
And in the end he helped Goku out a lot money-wise didnt he?And Goku never seemed to have any harsh feelings towards him.

There are many reasons why the Buu Saga is my least favorite Saga but Mr. Satan is not one of them.
Up to a certain point in the story, you could have even seen Mr. Satan as an antagonist in a way, an undeserving glory hog that deceives and lies and brags .
And yet I find it absolutely fascinating how he changed from that to a flawed but lovable idiot type character without actually changing his pesonality in the least. I believe he is a genuienly kind person.
And the fact that it was him and his undeserved glory that ended up saving the world was the ironic, poetic and brilliant twist that redeemed the Buu Saga in my eyes somewhat.
And mind you, I did not like him at all at first. I only started to appreciate him as I grew older.

Actually a good PR counts in every era. Most of the historical figures we praise today cared about it more than today celebrities- from Pharaohs whose scribes praised their victory no matter if it happened or not, emperors supporting financially artists, medieval knights paying minstrels to sing proper songs, kings keeping on eye what was written about them and their opponents. Good 'ol times...It actually almost makes me think of today, where you can become a celebrity simply by inhaling and exhaling on camera.
Back to the topic I've never felt bad about that. Mr. Satan seems pitiful for us, but from DB world's citizen's POV he was a hero. His lies about Cell Games was OFC a prove of his lack of courage- on the first moment. Later he believed that- he seems to be a mythomaniac. He was always full of good will- his frame actually helped heroes in some moments. In GT he turns into the tube for all bad news. His behaviour seems "bad", but actually it's just a human nature. And no, I don't feel pity for those who were forgotten. The world isn't a primary school where nice teacher tries to get something good out of everyone. Not fight, not try, get nothing. Simple.

No, not really. I don't think Goku and the others wanted fame anyhow. What I love are the "reveal" moments, where some dipshit brags about how good they are only to soil themselves when they see Goku in action. That happened a lot in Dragon Ball. What keeps me from being bitter is that Mr. Satan himself knows ultimately that his fame is undeserved, and I think knowing the Z-fighters could have ruined his career but chose not to has humbled him somewhat.

Not at all.
It was pretty funny, if anything.

I didn't mind that Mr. Satan took the credit for saving the world. I actually found that pretty funny. Mr. Satan was awesome in the Boo arc. However, in the Cell arc him and that commentator irritated me to no end.

Oh yeah, but that was mostly due to the anime.SylentEcho wrote:I didn't mind that Mr. Satan took the credit for saving the world. I actually found that pretty funny. Mr. Satan was awesome in the Boo arc. However, in the Cell arc him and that commentator irritated me to no end.
It was irritating to no end when immediately after a serious moment, you would have some stupid reaction from the Satan Squad.

Re: Did Mr. Satan's fame leave a bitter taste in your mouth?
Yeah, the manga wasn't so bad as far as I can remember. The Cell Games arc was almost un-watchable due to that.
Re: Did Mr. Satan's fame leave a bitter taste in your mouth?
Satan is the reason why I fast-forwarded most of the Boo arc. He was meant to be funny, but he was just a bothersome guy.
Re: Did Mr. Satan's fame leave a bitter taste in your mouth?
I was never annoyed by Mr. Satan's fame; on the contrary, I always hoped that he would keep both his fans and popularity, and felt kind of nervous whenever those things were threatened and it looked as though he might be making a fool out of himself (Such as the fight against 18). Come to think, a lot of the most painful moments of the series for me come from the Tenkaichi Budokais, I guess because they include a social element of public humiliation that battles against demons and alien invaders don't. It stung to see Kuririn lose to Goku so easily in the 22nd Budokai (Once he got serious, anyway). Three years of dreaming and hard work mercilessly tore down in just a few seconds. That's just the nature of competitive sport, I guess, but it's pretty harsh.
Anyway rambling aside (I'm tired), I'm glad that the Z Senshi never leaked the truth about Mr. Satan being very far from the most powerful human in the world, and that they let him keep his fame and worldwide acclaim. I've always liked it as a demonstration of just how much everyone's mellowed out over the years - there's no way that anyone would have tolerated Mr. Satan during the Dragon Ball days, where everyone was merciless in their race for the top of the martial arts totem pole and would have humiliated Mr. Satan so much that he'd never show his face in the Tenkaichi arena again. Their "Ah whatever, let's cut the guy a break and let him win the tournament" attitude during the 28th Budokai shows that they've all changed some throughout the series, that they've all become more mellow and subdued and that their personal lives don't have anywhere near the intensity it did during their youths. (Or maybe it just means that the Tenkaichi Budokai is so irrelevant to all of them by this point that it isn't even worth caring about, but... yeah.)

That's one way to look at it. I still hate Satan, he such an annoying character!!
Re: Did Mr. Satan's fame leave a bitter taste in your mouth?
Only his name not his fame. In the Buu saga he actually deserved it.
Re: Did Mr. Satan's fame leave a bitter taste in your mouth?
As he calls the advanced fighting techniques 'tricks' and the Z-fighters don't counter it, the people don't have the way or will to learn advanced fighting techniques. That means that if the Z-fighters are unavailable for some reason then any alien with a power level above 500 can conquer the world single-handedly.
