Ctensaur Fansubs

A while ago I got some dbz fansubs and I noticed that they were by this group called Ctenosaur and I'm kind of curious about them since they don't seem to be as well-known as Anime Labs. Does anyone know anything about this group or can they tell me any stories about them or other stuff they've done?

Please keep in mind I'm not asking where to find fansubs, so please EX and Julian, don't lock.

I don't remember a whole lot more about them, so maybe Ramza can dig some stuff up and fill us in. Ctenosaur was just one person, I believe (named Corey) who lived in New York. His stuff made the rounds throughout most of the video shops in Chinatown (but he also did a distro through his website). He subbed it all himself (as opposed to being part of a group), and did full-color inserts and cases for the videos.

They were definitely one of the best fansubbers, if not the best, for DBZ (in terms of both visual quality and general translation).

He also did Big O fansubs, which unfortunantly used washed-out colour sources, more notably the red. In a way it made the show look a bit older than it really was, which wasn't so bad.

Mostly mecha-type stuff. My brother eye-balled his site for Transformers anime.

How about S. Baldric? Through pure coincidence ALL my DBZ movie subs ended up coming from either S. Baldric productions or people claiming to be fansubbers, when in actuality they were just selling copies of his stuff.

I remember Ctenosaur Video, but more for the Japanese live action shows he subbed. Apparently the guy who started it is still running it, subbing mostly assorted Asian films. For the longest time his website was "under construction" until one day he suddenly updated. I won't give out the URL, in case it's against the rules, but really it shouldn't be too hard to figure out the address.

He's back and not back! Yay! Google "ctenosaur" and the first link is his old angelfire site which is indeed back up. It contains images and links, one of which leads to his new site. Naturally that new site is down.

Heh...yeah, I noticed that. I'm interested in what he's got to offer now. One title (I think it's called, "The Second One is a Christian") caught my attention with the katana-weilding nun.

It's so weird that Ctenosaur's being mentioned...I was just at a store today that is still selling fansub tapes. A bunch of them were Ctenosaur releases. It's sad, really.

Hey EX, I dunno if he wa BSing, covering his ass or just being weird but when I met Corey at a comic con (VERY small) he said he had an aquaintance doing translations. Dunno if that was the truth but 'tis what the man said.

Are there actually "companies" that publish fansubs of DB/DBZ/DBGT still today, you know, underground so that Funimation doesn't catch them or something?

If by "company" you mean... uhh... groups of "fans"... yeah, sure.

There's at least one group that's subbing and releasing DBZ. Let's make a distinction, though... these groups aren't fansubbers. They're DVD rippers (read: "scum"). Fuck 'em.

There's no such thing as "underground". If it's on the internet, someone knows about it, and can easily forward the necessary information to the necessary people.

So you're saying they don't do the subbing themselves, but just rip straight from DVD? And if not, then why wouldn't they be considered fansubbers? Because the material's been officially released?

A "fansubber" is someone (individual or group) who releases a subtitled version of a show that is not available in said fashion in a legal way.

A "DVD ripper" is someone (individual or group) who releases a subtitled (or even a dual English/Japanese OGM, these days) version of a show that *is* available in said fashion in a legal way. They actually take the legal, domestic release as their source. When it comes down to it, they're just bootleggers.

There's absolutely no reason what-so-ever for anyone to be releasing subtitled versions of DBZ, and there hasn't been for five years.

I'm sorry if this is gonna open a new can of worms, but what about the "OVA", and DB Movie 1? So far, there hasn't been any gaurantee for a legal subtitled release for them. So shouldn't fansubs be accepted, in those specific cases?

In my opinion I don't think those are acceptable, because just about everything else in the series has seen a legal release by now, and the material itself, in Movie 1's case, is at least legally available in some format. If you're talking about just owning those specific fansubs however, then I don't think that would be a big deal at all given their state. Of course someone who is actually subbing and distributing those fansubs in this era of the DB market is another story.

If you clicked the link, then it's down, since the last part of the address says html, not .com. You have to write it in but it displays on the main page

There are a still few DBZ fansubbers on the Net.
For one, there's [name of scumbag group removed by administrator]. I think they're DVD rippers though, but they subtitle their stuff

And there are a few French fansubbers ripping from the Dragon Boxes and using French subtitles.....
