Dream Spin-offs
So, let's say either Toriyama or Toei (depending on if you'd want it to be a comic or a cartoon) for whatever reason came up to you and said "Hey, we're going to make a new spin-off of Dragon Ball, and you get to decide the premise!", what would you tell them?
Personally, I'd love to see a spin-off cartoon following Bardock and his crew through their various excursions throughout the galaxy wiping out the inhabitants of various planets on the behalf of Freeza. Other Saiyan characters like Vegeta or Raditz would occasionally make appearences, but for the most part the show would focus on Bardock's team. It would also retroactively add more weight to the deaths of Bardock and his crew in the Bardock special, since as it is it's pretty hard to get upset over Bardock's team dying when they collectively have probably less than ten minutes of screen time.
So, what would your dream spin-off show be about?

Re: Dream Spin-offs
I wouldn't mind some kind of backstory to Lunch or 17&18.
Not really a show, but a special could be cool.

Kami's life before becomming kami. Especially the human related events that tainted his heart and helped create Piccolo.
Or a mini series with our heroes, especially the socially challenged ones, getting stuck in different hilarious situations. Think the drivin episode. Something like Dragon Ball Fumoffu

Re: Dream Spin-offs
I really liked the general setup behind the last DBZ movie (less so the constant change of focal character and the ridiculous "Goku pops out of the shadows and bullshit-punches the villain to death in one hit"), especially the early parts centered around Gohan and Videl, so I'd go with a series picking up shortly after the Buu arc, exploring their relationship, having fun with their Saiyaman identities, and keeping Mr. Satan and the kids around for comic relief.
Would probably work better as a more lighthearted series along the lines of the early Buu arc stuff, but a more dramatic storyline involving some new villain could work as well, I guess.

Re: Dream Spin-offs
I'd like some more fun, Jump Tour-esque Goku and Vegeta stuff that takes place during those 10 years between Buu and Uub.
Their bantering back and forth in that special left me wanting more. :3

Re: Dream Spin-offs
I'd love a special consisting of a detailed backstory for Tsuru-sennin, Kame-sennin, Tao Pai Pai, Mutaito, Piccolo Daimao, etc (they all go together kind of.) Tsuru-sennin especially is a very interesting character who is underused and thrown out way too early IMO.

Re: Dream Spin-offs
Teen ChiChi's adventures between King Piccolo and the 23rd Budokai. She showed up at the World Tournament as powerful as Master Roshi, there's gotta be some interesting/fun adventures behind that.
I would really like Raditz having a lot of screentime in this hypothetical show. He's Bardock's only son, after all.Taku128 wrote:Other Saiyan characters like Raditz
Re: Dream Spin-offs
I'd like to see Lunch's adventures, pre-series mid-series and post-series. I know a lot of it would have to do with chasing Tenshinhan, but I'd bet there's plenty of other interesting stuff she did.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: Dream Spin-offs
Toriyama later (jokingly) said in an interview that Ten and Lunch DID get together and they appeared together in the manga version of the 2006 Jump Special so it'd tie in nicely with a Tenshinhan/Chaozu spin-off. That would be an incredible spin-off overall. I'd prefer a giant backstory that ties in Tsuru-sennin/Tao Pai Pai, Kame-sennin, Piccolo Daimao, Mutaito, etc but a Tenshinhan/Chaozu/Lunch Spin-off is a VERY close second.bkev wrote:I'd like to see Lunch's adventures, pre-series mid-series and post-series. Re: Dream Spin-offs
I agree with the Ten/Lunch spin off. It was one of my favorite things to watch during DB and I was looking forward to their development. Boy, did that not only not happen, but the filler I got in DBZ showed Luncha in such a bad light....why Toei?????

Then...I dunno...a spin-off about Lunch?

Seconding these.Rocketman wrote:Teen ChiChi's adventures between King Piccolo and the 23rd Budokai. She showed up at the World Tournament as powerful as Master Roshi, there's gotta be some interesting/fun adventures behind that.
Maybe a special about Tullece, I’ve always wondered about his background. It could be interesting to see how he avoided getting blown up, how he gathered his cohorts and such.
Something centred on the son of Katas would also be very cool.
Maybe even some more background on Freeza and his race.

Yeah, and they should use the background information on his henchmen.StarRot wrote:Maybe a special about Tullece, I’ve always wondered about his background. It could be interesting to see how he avoided getting blown up, how he gathered his cohorts and such.

Re: Dream Spin-offs
Oh, yeah, there’s definitely some interesting stuff there.
Particularly with Daiz I think, what with the whole “oh, hey, I attacked your planet and probably completely destroyed your people/dynasty, but I’ll let you join my gang!” I can’t help but feel (as part of my fanon) that Daiz would be less than happy to just join up with Tullece after that, so lots of potential for drama right there.

I guess Tullece basically said, "Join my gang or die."StarRot wrote:Oh, yeah, there’s definitely some interesting stuff there.

Re: Dream Spin-offs
Probably.
He just seemed pretty content in the movie, guess he got over it.
I really want to write a fanfic/draw a comic of this now, heh.

I guess, over time working under Tullece, he grew into the role, started to enjoy it and just became evil.StarRot wrote:Probably.

Yeah, I want to write a fanfic about this too. Maybe I will after my fanfic about Ma Junior.

Re: Dream Spin-offs
I think a really cool story would be Trunks returning to see his old friends, sometime after the Buu Arc, and from there some epic adventures involving time travel. Something like "The Z Time Squad".

I've never really been a fan of Lunch but, when a character is introduced like she was (being chased by the police) - you've gotta wonder.

Re: Dream Spin-offs
The journey of Muten Roshi. We know he trained with Mutaito, had a rivalry with Tsuru-senni, trained with Karin, survived the invasion of Piccolo Daimao, and became a famous martial artist. It would be great to see him go through all of that.
Other than that I would like a spin-off that focuses on a different set of characters each time. One week it could be about Goku training Oob, the next it could be about Boo and Satan, after that about Kuririn's training at the Oorin Temple, etc..
