Hanna-Barbera Sound Effect Removal

Post by TripleRach » Fri Mar 18, 2011 1:13 pm

So I've been making some custom edits of some of my DB DVDs lately, mostly just to correct old errors or omissions from particular discs. All for personal use, of course. But I thought I'd share the details of my work just for fun, and in case anyone else wanted to try doing the same.

One of these little projects involves the FUNimation "Ultimate Uncut" release of DBZ Movie 1. The Japanese audio on this release somehow has Hanna-Barbera-style sound effects from the Ocean dub added to it. But, luckily, I also have a copy of the Pioneer release to steal Japanese audio from. I don't want to just use the entire Pioneer audio track outright, since I'm getting rid of it, and that's no fun anyway.

I haven't started any editing yet because I've been trying to figure out exactly where the added sound effects are. But I did listen to the two audio tracks carefully, and the only sound effect difference I noticed was near the end of the movie, when Gohan collapses after fighting Garlic Jr. (I think that's what happens. I didn't use video.)

So I have a question: Are there anymore extra sound effects besides that, or is this really the only one?
Also: Is Movie 1 the only one with this problem, or does it affect Movie 2 and/or 3 too?

Either way, I plan to post some timecodes and details when I actually get started.

I'd like to be able to have the Ocean dub without the added sound effects, if there's some way to do that.

Ia actually kind of had an idea with editing the Uncut Ocean Dub. Just in a different way. I was going to put the Ocean Dub on FUNimation's Steel Book releases of the movies and put the ocean dub for the first three movies on "English Voices with original Japanese BGM". It would've been a good idea. But then, Haseowolf said to me something along the lines of "We'd need to change the font of that option (Yet, I don't know why we'd have to do that) and it'd be a lot of work having to make the footage sync properly." So, it kind of fell through. But yours should be a lot easier and I hope we can see a comparison between the original (w/ Hanna Barbera SFX) and without them. It'd be cool.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

I was hoping someone would answer my questions, and while I was waiting for that, things occurred and it's already a month later. Oops. But I guess I wouldn't be the first person to necropost in a fan works thread.

So as far as I know, there's only the one added sound effect. I listened through the scene more thoroughly, to try to pinpoint exactly when and what needs to be edited out, and it turned out to be a lot more interesting than I'd realized.

In the Pioneer audio, from approximately 0:36:34 to 00:36:50, there was Nozawa Gokuu grunting, a lot of just BGM, Nozawa Gohan fainting, and then a hard thud.
But in the FUNimation audio, from approximately 00:36:36 to 00:36:50, there was Nozawa Gokuu grunting, some splashing noises (??), possible Saffron Henderson (?!?!) Gohan fainting, and then the wacky falling sound. I've uploaded a clip of this, because I find it absolutely fascinating that Saffron Henderson somehow made it into the Japanese audio, and I want to share it with you guys.

Masako Nozawa and Saffron Henderson!? (128 kbps MP3, 184 KB)

Anyway, I went into this figuring I'd just be pasting a clip of the good audio over the bad audio, and then trying to edit it to have a smooth transition. But I don't know crap about audio editing, so instead I used my very minor video experience to make clips in VirtualDub and extract the audio from them. This way I could also make sure it was frame accurate, since the timecodes for the two versions are different. The first big clip was the majority of the movie (FUNimation), then about 26 seconds surrounding the sound effect (Pioneer), and then the last few minutes of the movie (FUNimation). I opened up the three files up in Audacity and just cut and pasted them together. I figured I'd have to mess with the Pioneer clip to match it to the FUNimation audio, but the transition was a lot more subtle than I expected, and I'm satisfied leaving it as is.

26 seconds is a lot longer than I intended to use of the Pioneer audio, but for frame accuracy I made the clip at the start and end of specific shots. I'll describe it here:

Big chunks of stone falling, then cut to this start frame...
Image
All the stuff with Gokuu grunting, Gohan falling, everything going crazy, then this end frame...
Image
This is followed by a cut to Gokuu's shirt and shoes.

In the Pioneer version, this was from 0:36:31.898 to 0:36:57.424.
In the FUNimation version, this was from 0:36:33.491 to 0:36:59.017.

Now it's just a matter of putting my new, cleaner audio back with FUNimation's video, but that'll be simple. I like this old FUNimation Ultimate Uncut single because it has the distinction of being 4:3 and having the raw Japanese credits, but I might be in the minority on that. Either way, if anyone else wants to tackle this issue, I'd love to hear how they handled it. I don't really have any interest in the English audio, but if someone wants to try that too, it would still be on-topic, I guess.
