Should Toei think Twice before changing the BGM?

Post by Choice195 » Fri Apr 22, 2011 11:36 pm

Do you guys think it's really necessary for Toei to change the BGM in Kai, In my honest opinion they should have just changed the BGM during the parts when the stolen pieces are played not just completely change the entire BGM for the remaining parts of the series.

There would be quite a jarring change between the two BGMs popping up interchangeably.

... it'd probably be almost as jarring as the transitions between the original art and those redrawn scenes. :?

They could've replaced the copyright infringing pieces with already existing pieces of Kai music, for example, 'Ebb and Flow' could be replaced with 'One Hit To Victory' or 'The Fierce Battle'.

That's the exact same thing I was thinking of, The old Kikuchi score does not fit in with Kai at all, The HD quality doesn't fit with the old Audio.

The problem is that, for all they know, the whole score (excluding the theme song variations) could be plagiarized, so Toei can't use any of it without potential lawsuits to worry about.

They have to change all of it. Otherwise they still have to keep paying him royalties.

Of course they should think twice, but no one ever does when they're in panic mode.

Exchanging BGM was a prevention. Once some pieces of music were suspected they didn't want to wait for next sues, but just remove it once for all.

If they set out to only use non-infringing pieces we'd have just one song playing over and over.

I'm not exactly happy the switchover happened but let's call a spade a spade. Using anything from Yamamoto is a huge liability. Can't blame Toei for how they handled it. I'd have done the same thing.

Why not change the parts with the stolen music and replace it with... the non-stolen music that was produced for Kai? So it won't be a crazy change.

But this is hypothetically only for a release, right? Since Kai is canceled.

They don't know what is or is not stolen, though.

But there wasn't much plagiarized in Kai was there? I can only think of 2 BGM's, "The Ebb and the Flow" and "A New Foe Rears His Head"

There were more, but I think that only songs from the Android arc were plagiarized...

There's a few from the 'Saiyan Arc' such as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veuJ91u3HB8
I'm no expert on 'Star Wars', but it sounds awfully similar to a few pieces I've heard in the movies and games.

Also, I think switching plagiarized songs with Kikuchi's score and leaving in unplagiarized songs would be more work for Toei, instead of just totally replacing it. If they were to change by plagiarized or not, they would have to do a lot of research and look over each track on each episode and that would be a lot of work. Toei wanted to apply the BGM change as quickly as possible.
So mondo lame.

Exactly. As much as it sucks that they hastily re-inserted the Kikuchi score, that's really the only option they had in the very short time that they had to react to the scandal. Quite frankly, I think Kikuchi's music could still work for Kai, it's just that the editor is not doing a particularly good job of chosing the proper music for certain scenes. It totally has that feeling of...

"......Wait..........our current music can't work because it's......plagiarized.....?..................CRAPCRAPCRAPCRAPCRAP, okay um, this Kikuchi song will go here, this one will go here, okay this one kinda fits here, okay, moving on--!"
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Indeed, but as hastily as it was applied, Nagasaki did choose some good songs to use for some scenes... But at the same time, he chose unfitting ones that don't feel so fresh and natural for that scene as well.
So mondo lame.

It'd be cool if Toei didn't fire Yamamoto and made him re-compose original BGM replacing the BGM's that were plagiarized.

Yes, that would be cool, but with only two more episodes to air? I don't think Toei would want to spend more of their money on stuff like that.
So mondo lame.
