Oolong's Pilaf Arc Outfit
Does Oolong's Chinese communist uniform in the Pilaf arc mean anything? Was he wearing it for a reason or did Toriyama just think it was neat looking and toss it on him? DB Wikia seems to think this was some sort of political commentary by Toriyama but that seems out of character to me.
Re: Oolong's Pilaf Arc Outfit
He is a parody of a "communist pig", he seems to be more specifically based on Mao Tse-Tung

Holy shit! That seems so obvious in hindsight. Haha wow, I really hope I'm not the last person in the world to catch this. My mind has been blown, thanks for chiming in.Fox666 wrote:He is a parody of a "communist pig"

Likewise. I would have never guessed Oolong was a parody of two things, a character in Journey to the West and a "communist pig". Very interesting.
So mondo lame.

Re: Oolong's Pilaf Arc Outfit
Other than his design and clothes, I don't find anything with Oolong that points to him being communistic or having communistic ideals at all.
Sure, I agree with him probably being a parody of Mao, but Oolong's lifestyle reeks of capitalism (materialistic wealth, such as the luxury he gave to the abducted girld) and dictatorship (rule of the village more or less, and rule with fear). Maybe it's a link to how communist leaders surround themselves with wealth and women whilst their people suffer (like with Kim Il Jong).
Yes, I am over-analyzing this for the lulz. I am not in any way serious. Toriyama wasn't, after all.

Re: Oolong's Pilaf Arc Outfit
I don't know, I really doubt Toriyama had that in mind when designing Oolong. Maybe he did have Mao in mind at least (that style of clothes is known as a Mao suit in the West, though not in Japan), but I don't think there's any real significance to it other than how at the time DB had a quasi-Chinese setting and that suit's a stereotypical Chinese outfit.Piccolo Daimao wrote:Wikipedia wrote:Bachmann approached Dutschke, whom he had never met, in the street, having found out his address from the Einwohnermeldeamt, the registration office. Wade-Giles spelling VS Pinyin spelling. Both are correct.kaialone wrote:Isnt his name "Máo Zédōng" ? *getsshot*Fox666 wrote:He is a parody of a "communist pig", he seems to be more specifically based on Mao Tse-Tung

As for the suit, I don't think there's much of a reason behind it. You see them every now and then in various Japanese media without any kind of intended connotations. I remember Ranma wearing one at a point, I really doubt that was supposed to imply anything.

Isn't Oolong called MaoMao in the Harmony Gold dub? Interesting that it's so on the nose.Fox666 wrote:He is a parody of a "communist pig", he seems to be more specifically based on Mao Tse-Tung

Nor did I, really. For some reason, it doesn't seem like something Toriyama would do. But then again, there are people who say that General Blue is a parody of the Nazis, made doubly funny by the fact that he's a homosexual (which the Nazis were against). But I haven't heard anything confirmed like that; it could just be people pointing out the fact that General Blue has blonde hair, blue eyes and a costume that could be said to have similarities to, I think, the SS uniform.Herms wrote:I don't know, I really doubt Toriyama had that in mind when designing Oolong.
