Why didn't the Namekians fuse?

Forget fusing, they should have just given him the Dragon Balls, and told him the Namekkians have to concentrate as a council (thus keeping him from killing them all) and that the wishes have to be spoken in Namekkian.

Then, Freeza tells them to translate his wish, and they wish themselves and the Balls away from Namek to a new planet, and they still have 2 wishes left over. Cut to a non-immortal Freeza and men alone on a deserted planet. Epic troll, right?

Regarding the Fusions, maybe its as said and there just weren't enough warriors around. After he all, he did take a village at a time leaving them little news or time to prepare. Also, maybe the Namekkian fusion doesn't do much except for the specials like Piccolo. He was regarded as a "genius level" combatant among the Namek people, right?

Not Piccolo specifically. I doubt he'd fall into that category, considering most warrior-type Namekians were stronger than him anyway, and Nail was head and shoulders above him. If memory serves, only God (before splitting) was said to be a prodigy.

Saiyan Saga Piccolo was around the same level as what I consider to be the average power of a warrior class namekian.
After King Kai he was probably a good deal above that. I have no idea how powerful he was before he fused with Nail, he might have been stronger with the whole one day of training at King Kai is the equivalent of 1000 years training on earth power boost, he might have been not, but I think it's safe to say he was better and stronger than the rest of his race.

Well, I checked. In the manga they never sense anything. While in the Anime if I remember correctly they sense Cell when he becomes "perfect" and also sense the Earth exploding when blown by Kid Buu, of course.

I think sensing his approach came from TFS, but the Great Elder did seem to have premonitions that served a similar purpose. Even if he couldn't sense ki, the Elder still knew Nail wasn't a match for Freeza; he told him to stall Freeza, not defeat him.

He seems to be psychically linked to the other Namekians. Unless Nail served as a scout, which is unlikely, the Great Elder knew Namekians were being slaughtered even though he couldn't move from his throne. He can also sense Nail's death, and feel his pain

Nail says something like: "That guy's found out about this place. He'll be here soon." Refering to Freeza. Also when Vegeta gets there he notices it and when the Ginyu Force is approaching to Namek he senses 5 powers...so I don't know.

Both Nail and the Grand Elder do indeed sense "five great/evil powers" approaching Namek.

We have seen several instances which the namekians sensed the Ki. I.e. when Vegeta attacked a village, the elder said he had an evil heart.

Besides, the earthlings also learned Ki from the namekians.
