Just to be a stinker, the next time they reboot the series, I'm translating them as "synthanoids."

"Instantaneous Movement" for shunkan idou is a translation that's been around on Dragon Ball internet fan pages dating back to well before Simmons was translating for FUNi's DVDs. I'd agree that using "teleportation" as a translation is a more accurate description of Goku's technique but I can totally see why he used that. Kind of like how the romanized spelling of Majin Boo, "Buu," will never die out despite "Boo" being printed on various things in the anime and manga alike (bar of soap in the house he makes before he fights the skinny Boo comes to mind).

I think 'artificial human' works better than cyborg or android because it's... more.. uh, vague? I don't know how to explain it. For me the term 'artificial human' works well to describe all of Dr. Gero's creations. They're not all cyborgs, and they're not all machines.

According to my dictionary, the meaning of android is: "robot with a human appearance". That's really broad.

Well, the dub definitely doesn't help there, either.

If Toriyama wanted it to be "android" why not just use アンドロイド? If he wanted it to be "cyborg", why not use "サイボーグ"? I think he was trying to make it more vague by using "jinzōningen".

That's like saying "If Toriyama wanted it to be "milk" why not just use ミルク (miruku)? I think he was trying to make it more vague by using 牛乳 (gyūnyū)."

Except アンドロイド and サイボーグ are commonly used in anime, and other types of Japanese media. Have you guys never heard of Cyborg 009?

Not to mention the fact Dragon Ball is FILLED with English terms. Hell, the title alone.

So is ミルク. No, really. In fact, one of my beefs with ADV's subtitles of Sailor Moon is that they translated ミルク/miruku as "cream" which... makes no sense whatsoever.

No-one's deleting worthwhile posts. Your post may have just glitched out and is actually there, but isn't necessarily visible the way the post structure works.

Didn't FUNImation even edit a sign saying "Boo" to read "Buu"? I remember hearing that years ago, possibly on DBZOA. This only applies to the edited/Toonami version of course.

While it's been a long time since I read the Skypia story arc in One Piece, I know they use the English word "God" even in Japanese at least some of the time, so that probably contributed to it.

So I'm assuming they still call him Kami-sama in the Kai subs?

Also, I found this really useful page recently through Google. I wonder why it's not linked to on the site though.
