I agree with DBGT, it really needs the Kai treatment. The original DBGT dub is horrid.

GT doesn't really deserve a new dub. A good dub on a bleh show doesn't really improve the show at all.sun_wukong86 wrote:I agree with DBGT, it really needs the Kai treatment. The original DBGT dub is horrid.

Dragon Ball GT is awesome, though the English dub does suck. Pan's voice is the worst; I can understand why people who haven't seen the Japanese hate her so.

Completely agree about Pan's voice. She doesn't even sound like she's trying to sound Pan's age. Even the Blue Water voice for her was better, and if I recall correctly, her actress there was actually a kid, but even the delivery seemed better from what I remember.CatouttaHell wrote:Dragon Ball GT is awesome, though the English dub does suck. There's also the fact that FUNimation also often liked to turn up the "bitch-o-meter", as I believe Magicbox called it in his GT dub/sub comparison thread he had on FUNi's forums, which made her even more intolerable.
I'm not saying she was the deepest, most thoughtful character in the series in Japanese, I'm just saying she was at least tolerable there, but in the dub she just sounds so whiny, sounds too old, and the scripts bitch her up quite a bit at times.
I'd love to have Clinkenbeard as Goku, and Rial as Bulma though, so even if they just redubbed them and Pan (with a new actress), that'd make the dub good enough for me.

I agree with everything you said. Haven't heard the Blue Water dub so I won't speak on that but the FUNimation dub really turns up the "bitch-o-meter" on both Son Pan and Buruma. I'm a complete minority but I think she's actually a pretty cool character in the Japanese dub, though utterly unbearable in the English dub. Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever get a redub of GT as so many people hate it that FUNimation probably doesn't consider it a worthy cause.Metalwario64 wrote:Completely agree about Pan's voice. Re: What should FUNimation redub?
Objectively, you're wrong. The voice work of any cartoon is a critical method of judging its worth. Though it's the script in GT that I think dragged it so far down, as usual... not necessarily the tone or pitch of any one character's voice. Pan's always been fine with me. Not every kid is meant to sound good to your ears, dudes. Minaguchi's Pan doesn't exactly sound like an angel herself. More like a whinier Videl, who already sounded pretty damn whiny.ohaimynameiserik wrote:GT doesn't really deserve a new dub. A good dub on a bleh show doesn't really improve the show at all.
Re: What should FUNimation redub?
I'm surprised by all this hate toward the GT dub. Pan's voice is annoying, yes, but I always felt it was fairly well done (music notwithstanding since we got a respectable release in the green box sets). The script was about 80% accurate, which is good for a Dragonball show back then, and some of the voices were really good. Meh... matter of opinion I guess.

Re: What should FUNimation redub?
I disagree. If the dub was good, it'll help sitting through this bleh show as you described it. I watched it all in original Japanese, and it was good. So, how would it feel if the dub was as good as the original?ohaimynameiserik wrote:GT doesn't really deserve a new dub. A good dub on a bleh show doesn't really improve the show at all.

Re: What should FUNimation redub?
I'd definitely be up for a redub of GT. And most importantly:
Let Bruce Faulconer do the music please
I've seen videos on youtube where people replaced the original music with Bruce's. It made it 50 times more watchable.

Re: What should FUNimation redub?
Why in the world would FUNimation willingly replace music for a dub these days? They're long past that. Any redub of non-Kai material at this point is going to be using the original Japanese music, guaranteed.

Re: What should FUNimation redub?
FUNimation even stated that they hate the Faulconer score. So, they are not going to go with music replacement again. Sorry, buddy, Faulconer isn't going to be returning.
So mondo lame.
Re: What should FUNimation redub?
A Funi re-dub of GT using their talent today? Yes please.
Benefits? Chris Ayres as Freeza again, XD. And a better Sean Schemmel for SSJ4. And better dialogue, please ... ! I swear, if they release a Dragon Box GT, I'd expect a better dub.
They probably won't do it though. I mean, if they didn't do it for the Season Sets, why would they re-release GT aga- Ohhhhhhhh, it's Funniiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

Re: What should FUNimation redub?
I've heard this said multiple times, but no one's ever really quoted where this came from. Sure, I've seen big inferences (such as the Hulu airings using all the original music), but never any out and out interview where they were like 'this is shit, yo.'GotenDaisuki wrote:FUNimation even stated that they hate the Faulconer score. Personally I'd like to see the other 3 Dragon Ball movies get the Blood Rubies treatment.

I believe Chris Sabat once said it, but I'm not sure when or where he did.Ashura wrote:I've heard this said multiple times, but no one's ever really quoted where this came from. IIRC, it was Schemmel who [also] said it when he was talking about Z Kai and how it'd be using the original music, or something.GotenDaisuki wrote:I believe Chris Sabat once said it, but I'm not sure when or where he did.Ashura wrote:I've heard this said multiple times, but no one's ever really quoted where this came from. Re: What should FUNimation redub?
FUNimation shouldn't redub anything, the last thing we need is more confusion on which dub is which and dub vs dub arguments. The series has enough audio problems as it is.
Re: What should FUNimation redub?
I partially agree with you. I think it should be an all-or-nothing thing. Either they completely redo everything from beginning to end, or they leave it be.Codarik wrote:FUNimation shouldn't redub anything, the last thing we need is more confusion on which dub is which and dub vs dub arguments. The series has enough audio problems as it is.
The biggest problem with our favorite series is that it's so inconsistent. Look at the season sets' audio (the DBoxes fixed the video problem with the Z sets, and DB and GT were largely fine on the season sets). The series' quality progresses as such:
Dragon Ball - 7/10 to 8/10 on average
Dragon Ball Z - huge range from like 3/10 to 9/10
Dragon Ball GT - 6/10 to 7/10
And this is the issue. Dragon Ball and GT were at least consistent. DBZ is the elephant in the room, ranging from awesome and accurate dubbing in parts of Season 2, the last season to be dubbed by this cast, to horrible, inaccurate, or poorly delivered dubbing in parts of Season 3. The worst is 2006 Chris Sabat as Vegeta conversing with 1999 Sean Schemmel as Goku in Season 3. There's no consistency.
I know this is distinguishable, but consider other shows by contrast. I'll use the example of Boy Meets World for those who are in their late-teens or twenties (or older) and remember the show. Seasons 1 and 7 are polar opposites. You watch an early episode next to a later episode and you're like, WTF?! But you watch them in order from the first episode to the last and you can see exactly how it evolved, making the whole transition at least make sense. But in DBZ, it jumps in quality like a superball shot out of an air cannon in a small room.
If they redub anything like they did Kai, it needs to be the whole series. Kai, in my opinion, is a consistent 9/10 to 10/10 in terms of its dub. At its worst, it's really good; at its best, it is a true dub that captures the heart and spirit of the show and the only change is that it's in English. They have the talent and the ability, and there seems to be a fanbase out there that would buy the complete series redubbed from episode 1.
Re: What should FUNimation redub?
I only really care about GT and Dragon Ball. If they wanna knock out the movies, then that's cool too.

Wow, where does that happen? Is it just something they redubbed of Vegeta's but not Goku's?xzero wrote:The worst is 2006 Chris Sabat as Vegeta conversing with 1999 Sean Schemmel as Goku in Season 3. There's no consistency.

Movie 9. Simply for "because I'm my fathers SOOOOOON!" Or something like that. Its the worst line in the dub IMO.
