Who would you want to see compose music for Dragonball?

Post by Ringworm128 » Thu May 19, 2011 11:23 pm

If you could choose from any composer from around the world dead or alive to compose music for Dragonball who would you choose? For me I would choose Koji Kondo After hearing his score for Twilight Princess I think he could make some of the fights or transformations even more epic then they already are. For a second choice I would choose John Williams.

For the Japanese sound:
Joe Hisaishi would capture that wonderment feel really well and sound really authentic. I really like his stuff.

If I were to go with an American composer for the Japanesish orchestral sound, I'd pick Jerry Goldsmith.

For the old school Funimation hardcore style of DBZ music, I'd love to hear Klayton\CellDweller's take on it (besides wanting to do the whole show by myself)

Maybe Nobuo Uematsu for both worlds :)

I have only one pick off the top of my head:

Toshihiko Sahashi: anyone whose heard his work on shows like The Big O, Cyber Formula Future GPX, Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, and both Gundam SEED series knows that his work is very high-quality, with lots of range (old fashioned Hollywood film scoring, even incorporating techno/rock elements) and his knack for creating memorable melodies for his scores place him among one of my favorite composers ever.

Shinji Miyazaki. His Pokemon anime score is one of the best Japanese scores I have ever heard. He would have been a good choice for Dragon Ball/Z.

Is it cheating if I just picked Shunsuke Kikuchi? I would love it if he just came back and wrote more music for the Dragon Ball universe.

But if I had to pick another composer I'd pick Takanori Arisawa. Like Kikuchi he had an affection for trumpets and most of his work sounded very whimsical, making his work fit very well in Dragon Ball. He also liked using many string instruments, especially the violin, and I think that would fit very well too and great to hear in a DB soundtrack.

Kenji Yamamoto. No, not that one. This one.
But seriously, I would think Koji Kondo or the people who worked on Rhythm Heaven would be great.

I would have to say Toshihiko Sahashi. After hearing his work in Tutor-Hitman Reborn!, I think he'd do well bringing out the feeling of Dragon Ball with his music, but with much more diversity. He has a similar style to Kikuchi actually. It's a sort of jazzy/classical sound.

The guy who composed Sonic X's soundtrack, I mean c'mon just listen to it! It's Fast-paced, I would've loved Kai with this music!

GT isn't bad, just sucks ass in comparison to the other 2 animes.

Nobou Uematsu (Final Fantasy), Shiro Sagisu (Evangelion), or John Williams (there's no way you don't know who he is), if we were to go with different composers...

But quite frankly, what I would have loved to have seen is Kikuchi's music re-recorded with a bigger orchestra, like the London Symphonic.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

That actually would have made a big difference. Tuning and sheer numbers are one of my problems with the Japanese score, along with the lack of French horns.

Hayato Matsuo, in my opinion, would have done a much better job at composing Kai than Yamamoto.

He would be one of my choices too, but only if he gave it his best efforts and produced a nice, melodic score filled with memorable leitmotifs. These days, his work(which is somewhat overrated) tends to be just repetitive, obnoxious, booming noise with next to no actual thematic genius at all, just nonsense in the background to enhance the ambiance of every scene. However, his work in the '90s(such as in The Lion King and The Prince of Egypt) shows he can really do some wonderful scores.

My first pick would totally go to John Williams, though. An easy and predictable choice, but come on, the man's a legend in film music. Who wouldn't want to listen to what magic he could produce for the Dragon Ball franchise?

There's also James Horner who was did some outstanding soundtracks for family/animated films in the late '80s to early '90s and continued to do even better work for numerous films(such as the two modern Zorro films, Titanic, Avatar, etc.) afterwards. No doubt he'd do a good job as well. In fact, he recently did a splendid score for The Karate Kid remake. If his previous outstanding works aren't enough to prove he could do a decent martial arts film score, then that recent soundtrack should be convincing enough.

Yeah, in my dream world John Williams for sure. I can almost hear exactly what he'd do for the Super Saiyan scene.
The guy who composes One Piece's music is pretty good, I wouldn't mind him as a more realistic choice.

John Williams, I am definitely a huge fan of, one of my largest influences, but I'm not sure he's the perfect guy for DBZ (see my previous suggestions). Even the Japanese score uses electric guitar, and I've never been impressed with William's use of it. I really didn't like what he did with it in Episode 2..and his synth stuff has been ok, but it's very limited. There were some cool Williams synth sounds in Empire Strikes Back, but that's about it (aside from the Cantina music and Jabba dance music)

I think the most common thing that people are wanting to hear in this thread is a DBZ score performed by a GOOD ORCHESTRA like the London Philharmonic, LA Philharmonic, or Boston Pops. Most of these composers have had access to something like that. The composers who actually have written for DBZ were reduced to synths or the "Dragon Magic Orchestra"?(If my search info is correct)

Incidentally..I think it's a tragedy that Williams didn't score the last two Harry Potter films at least. The score for the last one was...boring boring boring boring...partly due to how much was left unscored. No wonder people said the film was a snooze.
