I made a thread about this a while back asking about the same thing because I remember that, even before I ever saw the episodes, I had read that Piccolo was not affected because, like them, he was already a Mazoku. So when I saw the dub first, I assumed that was something that FUNi just screwed up. But then I got the DBox and found out that nothing about that is ever mentioned anywhere. So I guess it's just fan wank. In reality, it didn't work because... it... because!
Tbh, I kinda suspected that he was pretending the whole time.simply because it was a predicatble twist. But the reason Toei didn't give any indication of that was because it was supposed to take us by surprise.
I think the "I'm already a demon" argument is pretty solid and makes sense for DB standarts but I also interpreted it as simply that magic mist or whatever was weak magic for him or something. Like a person pretending to get drunk after two glasses when in reality he could up to 5.

It's hinted at him not being effected because his "healing" ability expelled the turning-people-evil stuff before it affected him by showing him completely healing his neck of the teeth marks after revealing how he was bluffing.

Everybody hates the Garlick Jr. Saga? Wow. I actually like it. You know, in all honesty, at first I hated the fillers but in time they started growing on me, even when they brought inconsistencies to the overall plot. I justify this with my big love for Dragon Ball. I guess I've learned to view filler as extra content. In other anime series I skip fillers like they are plague.
Anyway, The Garlick Jr. Saga was okay and I liked how they gave Gohan the floor for a change.

You gotta admit though, the scenes with Vegeta on other plants hunting down Goku were epic. Were those scenes filler too?

I don't hate it but I don't think it makes much sense. For example, Garlic Junior opening the Deadzone a second time = very slow learning curve.

Just wondering, how many people here saw the Garlic Jr saga before Dead Zone?
I did, and I wonder if that's why I liked it.

I did. It seemed like every time I get a chance to watch DBZ on Toonami (didn't have cable in my house at the time), the Garlic Junior arc was being re-aired. Pissed me the hell off.

Yeah and killing other alien races like a boss. Vegeta should have had more episodic space episodes.

Everything about the Garlic arc was good except for the fact that the fight dragged on for too long. My favourite episode from that arc was the one with Maron in it.

Because it's a boring ass saga with a boring cast that keeps on dragging and lack of Vegeta and Goku didn't really help either. Gohan wasn't really doing it as the lead character in that saga, probably because at that point he didn't have much of a character! There were good ideas in the saga (making Krillin/Gohan/Piccolo actually relevant, friends as enemies) but poorly executed - imo
