Frieza Singles

Post by Pokewhiz7 » Sat May 28, 2011 3:51 pm

I was reading up on the DaizEX DVD guide about the Frieza singles, and apparently the later releases corrected issues with the earlier ones.
There had been rumors floating around that FUNimation would be remastering these discs to fix issues (such as episode navigation, eye-catches, theme songs, etc.), but nothing further was ever officially announced. However, many fans report purchasing these discs many years later with corrected features (such as surrounding OP/ED themes); it is assumed FUNimation did another "silent correction release" with many of these discs.
Can anybody confirm to this, and if so what to look for? Are there any packaging differences? (Like how the corrected Trunks disks had a smaller watermark.)

I can confirm this. I have "The Summoning" (I got it off ebay about 5 years back, for $0.01) and it has corrected features. No packaging differences, though.

Damn, looks like you just have to be lucky. At least I know they're out there.

I can confirm it too. My friend has "Desperation" and "Clash" from their new lot and I have the old lot. I've noticed a couple of changes in dialogue, slightly better voice acting from Sabat here and there and I think they used the narrator that they used from the Boo arcs, not Dale Kelly.

Kyle Herbert?
"Perfect" is the enemy of the good. True for Cell and true for real life.

Great, so I get Dale Kelly but incorrect features, or I get correct features but Kyle Hebert.

Strange, my Freeza single didn't seem to have any changes to the dub, and still has Dale Kelly as the narrator. :?

Maybe it depends on which single it is. The one you have is a different one than he has.

Wait, so there are discs out there with differences in the substance of the actual episodes? I never knew that. Can anyone post comparison videos or audio clips from the two versions, such as differences between Sabat's lines in one versus the other?

If you think about it, that means that factoring in subtle differences, there are like 5 "official" dub versions of some of these episodes:
(1) edited for TV (available on VHS only, I believe),
(2) uncut original (original Singles run),
(3) uncut altered original (few episodes in *corrected* singles run),
(4) uncut, partially redubbed, with Faulconer music,
(5) uncut, partially redubbed, with Kikuchi music

That's insane! It's funny that there has never been a truly consistent DVD run of the series dubbed in America (decent script, good voices for seasons 1 and 2, inconsistent script and voices for seasons 3 and 4, and mediocre script and okay voices for seasons 5-9 in both "complete" runs of the series on DVD). Then to top that off, we get stuff like. Nothing like being a DBZ fan in America :D

I think Sabat re-voiced Vegeta to sound a little better. I'm not sure though. I would only come to know if I saw the first Ginyu DVD of my friend's version because Sabat sounded horrible on it.

I have two Cell DVDs, "Temptation" and "Awakening" which I picked up a couple of years ago with Kyle Herbert as the narrator and I clearly remember Dale Kelly being the narrator for those.

Yes, I'm pretty sure they had an edited release out as well because on my Super Android DVD, Android 13 says "I was programmed to kill your ass.", but on his edited version it says something like, "I was programmed to destroy you/kill you." He doesn't say "ass".

The groin shot he gave Goku was edited out as well.

I think they released edited versions of all of the movies, at least up through 12 (can't recall seeing an edited 13), but I think the only edited TV episodes are the seasons 1 and 2 singles and possibly some VHS releases. I have all of my singles in a big box in my parents' basement, but I need to check now to see who the narrarator was on those Cell discs.

Well, there are usually two different VHS releases, uncut and edited:

Of course, the Ocean episodes of season 1 and 2 were only edited. I don't think the first three movies were ever released edited. Tree of Might was edited and played on Toonami, but not released on DVD. Later, FUNimation went back and used their in-house cast and released them under the "Ultimate Uncut Special Edition". I do recall seeing some of the movies edited on VHS, though:

All of the DVDs except the Pioneer/Geneon releases of seasons 1 and 2 were uncut. I know on TV Dale Kelly was the narrator until late Cell/early Boo. I also know the edited Cell Games saga never was released entirely on VHS, so the only way to get the edited versions of those episodes would by a TV recording. I can't confirm this, but I heard some singles had Kyle Hebert on DVD and Dale Kelly on VHS.
