Didn't Tenshinhan aspire to become as great a killer as TaoPaiPai in the anime? Ten wasn't so noble in the early days; he was pretty cruel towards his opponents.
Ahh, that must be why the bio said that then. In the manga it isn't known why he trained under Tsurusenin. The only thing he knew about Taopaipai in the manga was that he was Tsuru's brother and that he was an excellent fighter (and probably the assassin bit).
In the manga he also says he wants to be an assassin like Tao Pie Pie. It's after talking with Old Man Roshi and fighting Goku he changes his mind.

Curses. You beat me to it...

In fact, saying he no longer wants to be an assassin like Taopaipai is what sets Tsuru-sen'nin off his rocker, and tries to attack Ten and Son, but obviously Muten-Roshi shoots him away with a Kamehameha...

I always assumed that Tenshinhan's third eye comes from Hindu and Chinese mythology, where one who undergoes intense physical, mental, and spiritual training will be rewarded with an eye in the center of his forehead and intense powers to go with it... This alien thing... just effs things up.

Who's to say that's wrong? However, design inspiration and story info are very different things.

Maybe the daizenshuu was calling him an illegal alien. He tried to assassinate someone, failed, and illegaly entered another country to hide. Luckily for him, it was the same country where Tsurusennin lived. :P

If Son Gokuu himself is based on the great Monkey King, and Chaozu is (I think) based on a jiangshi, then how would Tenshinhan being based on a three-eyed transcendent being be a stretch?

Considering the vigorous training Ten has gone through and different martial arts style he was raised under, I think it would make sense that he was simply a human who reached enlightenment. Especially considering the heavy Asian theme Dragon Ball was undergoing in its early days.

Plus, don't the Budokai games list him in with the humans? o_O

That doesn't really make much sense since becoming 'enlightened' during his training to become an assassin seems kind of, I dunno, completely the opposite of pretty much any kind of Buddhism you throw out there.

Look, since the Daiz have their errors and were definitely not made in every part by Akira Toriyama, it would also be incorrect for anyone to say that is 'wrong' (even though that information hasn't been offered anywhere). It all depends if you want to trust a source that is closer to being accurate to Akira Toriyama's description and is even praised by the author himself.

If not, I guess that's your call as a fan. The important thing is that you enjoy it. I know Akira Toriyama certainly wouldn't argue the point with anyone.

Of course not. He'd just be like... "Who the Hell is Tenshinhan?"

I love poking fun at the only man in existance whose crappy memory surpasses mine. Even if I respect him a googleplex times over.

Indeed. He's the only one I know of with a memory worse than mine. :D It's just so fun and easy to poke fun at it. Hmmm, I wonder who in the DB cast he does remember...

I'll bet $10 he remembers Son Goku.

Since it was his most recent work, I'm guessing that he remembers every DB character in Neko Majin.

I heard from someone that Tien developed that third eye to help store sunlight for his Solar Flare technique, because his third eye is always open, even if his other two are closed.

Or something like that related to the Taiyoken.

Thah makes sense... but didn't he close it at one point? I don't remember if it was the anime or the manga but I can remember him closing it for something...

(Maybe sand?)

Doubtful. Taiyoken's supposed to be one of the easiest techniques to use. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was easier to use than bukujutsu.

Goku and Kuririn can both use it (I wouldn't count Cell), though there's probably something humorous behind Kuririn using it.
