Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discuss
Maybe it's just a cute little character quirk that FUNI added in? That is, Krillin insists on calling it Kame House while the rest of the gang call it by the proper name, kind of like how Goku has a hick accent in the Japanese version.

But he pronounces Kamehameha right. =/

If FUNimation really wanted Kai to be as close to the Japanese version as possible, they would have already corrected Sonny's mispronunciations of "Kienzan" and "Kame House". The Kai dub is beginning to show more and more early FUNimation aspects, in my opinion.
So mondo lame.

Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discuss
Well, character quirks don't necessarily have to make sense. From what I've heard, in the Japanese version, Goku demonstrates very clearly that he could speak normally if he wanted to when he transforms into a Super Saiyan for the first time (when he starts speaking all intensely and all that), yet he sticks with the hick accent afterwards anyways. Of course, I don't know that for certain. But if I'm correct, it could be the same sort of thing. But he pronounces Kamehameha right. =/
Can you list some examples? I mean, I know of stuff like Yamcha's "Future Trunks" line and the truck drivers "DUDE, MY TRUCK!!", but are there any other more glaring examples? If FUNimation really wanted Kai to be as close to the Japanese version as possible, they would have already corrected Sonny's mispronunciations of "Kienzan" and "Kame House". The Kai dub is beginning to show more and more early FUNimation aspects, in my opinion.

How often is Kienzan even used again? And I thought I recall him pronouncing it right the second time he used it (which I think was the last time).GotenDaisuki wrote:If FUNimation really wanted Kai to be as close to the Japanese version as possible, they would have already corrected Sonny's mispronunciations of "Kienzan" and "Kame House". Jeez, how perfect does a dub have to be before we stop saying they're going back to their old ways or being lazy about it?
And even dubs going for decent accuracy don't always get things pronounced right. Ichigo certainly isn't saying Zangetsu right, despite how often the name was used (which is many fold more often than Krillin doing Kienzan), yet there's far less issue with that for people.
I'm not sure if it's the fact that people tend to be more strict about things due to Dragon Ball's history in terms of dubbing, or it's just the crowd in the board, but I've basically gotten two vibes: Excellent (Freeza Arc), and "OH GOD, THEY'RE DOING IT AGAIN!" (some of the current stuff). I'm over-exaggerating, of course, but it really does feel like people aren't letting the few minor issues here and there stand on a middle ground, but treat it like an anchor, dragging the better parts of the series (most of it) down a bit farther in the quality poll than such flaws should affect it.
But hey, maybe I'm just one guy who's got an off-view on things.

What's the exact track name? I can't find it :/DB_Fan1991 wrote:The recap music is Piccolo's bell theme from early DBZ. Not sure about the title screen though.
GT isn't bad, just sucks ass in comparison to the other 2 animes.

I agree. I haven't even noticed any mispronuncing of Kienzan and if so, its extremely minor. We're lucky they're using the Japanese terms in the first place. In terms of the dub overall, its a hell a lot better than Z's dub. Sure, its not a Death Note dub, but it will set the standard for future Dragon Ball dubs.Mewzard wrote:How often is Kienzan even used again? He did pronounce Kienzan correctly after the first time (against Giant-Monkey-Vegeta, and later against Freeza), though.GotenDaisuki wrote:If FUNimation really wanted Kai to be as close to the Japanese version as possible, they would have already corrected Sonny's mispronunciations of "Kienzan" and "Kame House". Oh god. That's so terrible. They're obviously going back to censoring Gohan's tears. I am not overreacting to this at all. I hope that wasn't directed at me, because I wasn't even really complaining, just pointing it out.Rocketman wrote:Oh god. That's so terrible. They're obviously going back to censoring Gohan's tears. I am not overreacting to this at all. Boo hoo hoo. *slashes wrist*

I don't get how not pronouncing names 100% correctly is so horrible. Shouldn't it be enough that they're actually trying to be faithful this time? Do they really have to perform perfectly for you to accept it as BETTER? (No, not directed at you Metalwario64)

Thanks for clarifying, but I only really questioned Rocketman because he quoted my previous post within his own.MetroidJunkie wrote:(No, not directed at you Metalwario64)
Also, when you double post, you can delete the second one you made by clicking the "x" in the bottom right corner of the post, as long as it's still the most recent one in the thread.

To me, the greatest fault of the Kai Dub is the fact that they stuck with Tri-Beam. That's the only glaring problem in my book. Especially since within Part 6 will feature the most epic Kikoho of all-time.

This is pretty much the only unforgivable aspect for me, also.Gozar wrote:To me, the greatest fault of the Kai Dub is the fact that they stuck with Tri-Beam. That's the only glaring problem in my book. Especially since within Part 6 will feature the most epic Kikoho of all-time.
Having Piccolo and Krillin's attacks be faithfully corrected only for Tenshinhan to still suffer from a dub attack name is just salt in the wounds, really.

And what's even weirder is that "Kikoho" seems much easier to pronounce than "Makankosappo" or "Kienzan".
So mondo lame.
