This is quite possibly the best DBZ fanfic I've ever read. The story is that Trunks traveled too far back in time and ended up in age 761, and on a planet being invaded by Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz. Not wanting to threaten his existence and blow his cover, he reluctantly joins the trio. The characters are captured perfectly, especially Vegeta. The suspense throughout the fic is phenomenal. It's well worth a read.

Ok, so it clearly plays on some dub inaccuracies--Vegeta asking certain people to join him, over doing the saiyan honor/loyalty, Nappa makes an offhand comment about being the commander of the saiyan army. But it's far too awesome for that to be worth complaining about.

I like how it tries to mirror the series with certain people's fates and things. When I came to reply, it made me think of what we were talking about in another thread about a MK9-style reboot.
Of course, it's also brutally dark. As a means of messing with the head of an already messed up character, it works pretty well (Ok, two messed up characters...). But it doesn't completely omit the occasional Toriyama-esque moment, even with the emphasis it puts on the methods of Freeza's followers.

Now if I could just read the blasted ending.

Well, it's not one of those "abandoned" fics. It's still in-progress. The author writes a ton of other fics, and she said on her Twitter that she's working on the next chapter as much as she can.

I tried, but the writing style is just... not good. The idea is pretty neat, but I couldn't get past Chapter 2. Does the prose improve at any point?

Well, the perspective character is Trunks, most of the time. So.... there you are.

Actually, if I was going to complain about anything writing-wise, it would be that there are some stylistically questionable perspective changes sprinkled throughout, but they're nothing to stop reading over.

She could've easily made him just a generic villain. But his dialogue, attitude and just the way he treats Vegeta in a particular chapter, as well as the way he acts towards Cooler and how he disrespects some of the laws King Cold set out, it makes you really want to see him get his.

The only thing that really bugs me is that everyone seems to be anticipating how different Porunga is from Shenron, which seemed to catch everyone off guard in DBZ.
