DBZ Sparking! - In Depth Fighting analysis thread

Post by Webon » Wed Nov 02, 2005 8:34 pm

Aigh't my fellow Tekkenites, DOAdites and fighting gurus - this game pales in compariso as in terms of Fighting depth. Hell!, even Budokai 3 is deeper than this.

However, we are not here to discuss that. The game kick @ss and is far more pleasing (aesthetic-wise) than the games above. Yeah, so what if its simpler than SC3 - who cares. DBZ is DBZ. And DBZ is the bomb.

All right here goes.

Blocking System.

I found out that there is a quite simple parrying system.

The Parry.

Tap O, at the moment they hit you (you will see your character flash while being hit), and you will parry them and start your own combo chain. This usually done in the middle of a combo - such as the "stun" hit. Another thing to consider, that is easier to interrupt a chain from a Character that is quicker - such as SSJ2 Gohan - because the chances of parrying are higher.

Teleporting 101.

Okay, this also involves tapping O, however this inputed usually at the last minute, much akin to JF (Just Frame) moves in the Tekken series, but the window frame is much bigger. Still, requires more timing than your usual parry. It has to be at the very last second of the animation.

So like...Webon...when can I Teleport??

-Remember those damn, Dragon Rushes (Or Meteo Smash from the old DBZ games...the CORRECT term) Can't block them? Can't avoid them? Can't Ki-blast rush them!? WHYY!!??

Answer: because they are in Post-Meteo (Old DBZ games term) - They are usually rushing at you at such state of high Ki-rush - that they are so damn fast that most Ki-blasts are deflected and its an almost instant to execute and punish.

Conclusion: Blast 2 Ki-Attack OR Teleport. Its easy, the lather being more Ki-conservative. Time it right, and you can teleport very easily. Leave them open to your punishment. Its up to you. I find Teleporting more easier.

I use to hate it when the AI just used to pull them out like 4 times in a row, especially in survival matches with foes such as Freeza and Buu. Now, it is a thing of the past.

-Fighting and Teleporting.

To MY observation, I have recently discovered (I got this game last week! give me a break!!) that you can also interrupt your combo enders with a teleport.

So far, I have seen most character do this, but SSJ2 SonGokou and SSJ2 Vegita can teleport right behind an enemy and continue their onslaught. I think its done in the middle of their chain attacks (The yellow bars in the Power-Hit bar below the radar). Mostly the 4th tap of the Attack button or final hit of their combo chain. (Make sure the your levels don't go back to Green or it won't work)

*Please note, this varies by characters, due to the fact some character actually have more hits per button imput. Example SSJ2 Gohan.

HOWEVER - Not every character teleports foward. I'm not so sure (Can anyone help!?) I seen so far Perfect Cell, SSJ2 Gokou, SSJ2 Vegita do this.

SSJ3 Gotenks however teleports back. I can never be able to teleport him foward....its usually

X, X, X, X, back+O => 100% true teleport. But if anyone can make him teleport foward, please reply.

Another thing I noticed, is that I'm currently formulating the fact that there SOME character than can teleport back, and some who can teleport foward. SonGokou SSJ2 being the sole exception due to the fact he has a "support-blast" move that can allow him to teleport at will.

Also, Hold the block button and move the right joystick+directional pad. You will see your character go on into different block poses, like Mortal Kombat Deception, Deadly Alliances...what does this mean?? Try it out. I tried with SSJ3 Gotenks, and he was in different stances while blocking - does this have any SPECIAL properties? I will go study this some more.

P.S. Why is that SSJ3 Gotenks can do up to 3 Meteo-smashes followups in Z-Gate, and in normal matches he only does one follow up (You know, smash=>followup=>etc. But SSJ3 Gotenks in Z-Gate =>smash=>smash=>smash, etc.

Also, I stress SSJ3 Gotenks because he has very funny Meteo-Smashes followups. He POSES after every time he ends a move. Very hilarious!. He does many cool funny special poses right after ending any of his chains with a Meteo Smash.

Check it out with individual characters, they use attacks from the actual series. Freeza's 1st form backhand attack he used on Neil. Super Vegeta's uppercut attack on Cell 2nd Form. Very well done and faithful to the series. There are more, but I don't have enough.

As I stated before - the closest DBZ game that embodies DBZ.

Anyways - I hope the community can build on from this. I will be back with more later, to help out the scrubs.[/b]

Correction to your Rush-Type mention. There is a third and fourth means of defense agaisnt such moves. You mentioned the Blast 2/3 and teleporting. I do believe at least some Blast 1's can defelct/counter as well (I think I did it once but can't remember for sure). And the fourth means is parry. That's right, you can parry a Rush-Type if you time your guard right. I've seen the Com do this to me once or twice and I've managed it (accidently) once or twice.

Of these, the blast move is the easiest and most effective, not only do you save your own health but inflict a good chunk of damage as well. Especially if the blast you use is another Rush-Type since you'll first enter Burst Mode and then follow up with your Rush.

About teleport direction, just tapping O really shouldn't cause a teleport. You need to press a direction in junction with the O button to teleport in that direction. So what direction you press (forward, back, left, or right) is the way you'll go. I've already seen Cell jumping left and right with this move around Vegeta's 10 Ki blast chain.

Lastly, SSJ3 Gotenks has multiple follow-ups in Z Gate thanks to Potara equipment, I believe. It seems that your own personalizations in Evolution Z do not carry into Z Gate but that the characters have a pre-set Potara system, both player and com. IIRC the "Dragon Homing" Potara is what is used for this, though I could be wrong.

<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

No, you're correct Xyex. The story matches in Z Gate have preset support potaras such as Dragon Homing.

It's for the combo finishers, if your opponent tries to hit you upward, guard down to block it. They attack down, you block up, they attack right, you block left, they attack left, you block right.
That's what my friend has told me, and he seems to have used it on occasion, but I can't seem to get it (I'm not much of a defender)
