I will most likely go by this logic too. When I get around to buying a Blu-ray player, I'll pick up Kai and then out of this release, I'll only buy the Buu saga.

Once I have all of the Dragon Boxes, I'm done!

I may love this series to death, but that doesn't mean I want to keep buying it for the rest of my life. Plus, I already swore that the Dragon Boxes would be my final purchase of the series, and I'm sticking to that.

And besides, the Blu-ray is sure to be a dub-centric release, and only have English title cards and credits (no alternate angles), and since this is FUNi's multi-generational masters we're talking about, no next episode previews.

TheGreatness25 wrote:True, but I am just sick of sitting around for 2 years collecting sets. The Season Sets ran around 2 years, now the Dragon Boxes ran around 2 years. Now this thing will have, what? A GRAND WHOPPING of 17 episodes! Wow! It took two years to get the entire series released with 40 episode per release, but now boy, oh boy, 17 episodes! And after Blu-ray, they'll release it on the next thing that comes out that will be even better than Blu-ray. And then they're going to release it in 3D! And I'll be collecting DBZ when I'm 65 years old.

Screw it. I'm done. It's a cartoon. To see it in "oh my gosh, ultra high definition!!!" is not something I care about since I have Kai on Blu-ray (can't imagine the DVDs looking too much worse than they do), and I have the Dragon Box which may not be the most grandeur release they can have (it's no Blu-ray), but it is the most faithful version of the way the show was intended (at least for home release). So screw it. Besides, I'm not a technical genius, I know nothing about this stuff, but movies on Blu-ray KILL DVD. But a cartoon? What could be different? Unless the DVD image is blocky with sharp jaggedy lines, then I can't imagine what Blu-ray can do for it other than make it a bit brighter maybe (which you can do on your TV). That's just me and I will admit that I'm not knowledgeable in this field, but using logic... I mean on a real movie, in HD, it's more smooth, you can see more detail, you can see the leaves on the trees in the background, it looks just so much clearer. But on a cartoon? I mean you won't be seeing anything on Blu-ray that wasn't drawn in to begin with, and I don't exactly believe that DVD is in such stone ages that it prevents you from seeing everything that was drawn, exactly how it was drawn.
I'm sig-ing that quote :)

But, there is a difference between SD and HD animation. Ever seen some HD screencaps from the movie 5cm per second? ...dude!

However, in the case of DBZ. Yeah. It's pointless.

So based on what FUNimation said at Otakon. It's a new transfer. Also the trailer they showed was in 4:3.

Yeah.

Curious to see how it looks and what exactly it was sourced from.

Nothing from any contacts, but based on past experience, there will likely be something within 3 weeks...ish.

So glad I seem to be wrong in this case. I now think that the press release's mention of ANDTRANSFER's involvement could be taken as either saying they worked with them on this release, that they worked on the season set's, or that they worked on both. I was originally mistaken and thought the ANN article was taken from the press release, but after searching it turns out it wasn't.
FUNimation worked with Dallas-based ANDTRANSFER for the digital film transfer. FUNimation previously worked with the post-production house to remaster the series for the season set releases on DVD.
Since it only says "previously" in the second sentence, it seems to imply that it's saying they're working with them again for this new transfer. Like saying "They worked on this release, and previously worked on the DVD release". If the second sentence was the only one, then it would clearly be saying that they only worked on the previous release. If they are both referring to the season sets, then it seems quite redundant.

Either it's bad wording, I'm missing something and it's just saying they only worked with them before, or they randomly wanted to work with them again, even though they stopped working with them during season six.

Maybe they really are mainly pumping these out at this time to make up for the lack of a Boo-arc in Kai. If these look decent enough, I could see them being a viable way to continue a Blu-Ray collection after Kai ends, though the episode count still sucks.

How good did the 4:3 footage look from the trailer if it was shown at all?

Hmmm..... I might buy this only if it has extra special features for Blu-ray only and maybe if the video quality is halfway decent.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

I hate to say I am curious enough, right after buying all the Dragon Boxes (with 7 pre-ordered). I dunno, maybe some day very far down the line if the price is just right for the amount of episodes.
I think I'll be buying assorted Dragon Ball things for the rest of my life.

I still very much doubt it will look anywhere near as good as the Dragon Box. I have little interest in any "remastering" done by Funimation.

Awesome! At least it's in 4:3 and it isn't the Orange Brick mess from before.

I'm extremely curious about this trailer.

FUNimation has a big chance here to redeem themselves in the remastering department. Here's hoping they don't squander it. If they do a good job, I might buy a set or two.

I'm going to have to agree.

There's no way FUNimation will top the Dragon Boxes. This new Blu-Ray release is just another way for them to milk DBZ for all its worth.
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Fan of Dragon Ball Z and various other Anime since '98! ^^

No possible marathon mode?
