Three Different Versions of Original Japanese Dub

Post by kei17 » Fri Jul 29, 2011 1:33 am

As I said here before, people watched episode 92 in Akita prefecture said that M817 played in the end of the episode, when Gohan goes SSJ2. Then I got the DVD release recently, but the track plays in the scene is different than what they said.

(Mirror-reversed to avoid FUNi's block)

I asked syoujikimura on Twitter again and he said that this was not what he saw on TV, then he was kind enough to send me a copy of DVD he recorded off Akita TV.

Here is a clip from that:

*To prove that this is not fake, I uploaded a clip of Sponsor Credits that was broadcast only on Akita TV. You can directly ask shoujikimura about this if you want.

You know, this track is mixed and released only in mono. It seems that they got rid of every mono-mixed piece for the DVD release. Probably they were very rushed that they even had to use some mono pieces to fill in the silence to immediately make up an alternate master for delayed-runs in remote areas, but decided not to use them for the sake of consistency after the original run on Fuji TV had been resumed. In addition, Beedock, who lives in Osaka, made a BGM list of episode 95 aired on Kansai TV. As you can see, many mono-mixed tracks played in the episode, but none of them play in the DVD version. There were other delayed-runs in several remote areas, so that means a lot of other only-on-TV Kikuchi mix episodes exist.

In conclusion, there are three different versions of the original Japanese dub of Kai:

1) Yamamoto score version
2) Kikuchi score version with mono pieces, only on TV (episodes around Cell Game)
3) Kikuchi score version without mono pieces

Hahaha, very interesting information, Kei. Edit: both Kikuchi versions are pretty horrible, though.

The TV version is better, to me, at least. But yeah, really could have used something else during those shots of Gohan with such... subtle music.

I much prefer the DVD version. Meanwhile your other Kai videos with the questionable music placement have me questioning if I want to buy that re-release with the Kikuichi music or not. 1 step forward, 2 steps back I guess!

The TV version sounds totally off to me. The DVD version is mediocre, but the TV version is just wrong.

This upsets me more than we'll never get our hands on the original Yamamoto BGM.
That track really blew me away.

Yeah, the music selection here is just terrible. I can't believe they're putting the Kikuchi score to such shame.

I wonder how well the replacement was done for episodes #89 and #94?

Episode 94 is pretty well done. The droning musical placement around Cell's kamehameha has been improved.

By the way, I got the DVD which includes episode 92 to extract the voice/sound effects to rip "The Beginning Of Cell's End", an unreleased piece of Yamamoto score, but the BGM in the scene is completely chopped up, so I once gave up doing it. But I've got this Akita TV version. I succeeded at eliminating the music, and made my own ideal Kikuchi mix for fun. I'll try to rip Yamamoto's piece later, too.

Oh my, that's interesting. Any chance you can upload a clip, even if it's just the audio?

That was pretty damn good! Any chance you can upload the same scene without the BGM? I'd love to try it out with some of Kikuchi's other pieces.

DBZ bootlegs have the movie 9 cover with the pioneer movie 2 description on the back and the disc actually has a Japanese soap opera in MEPG2.

Cool. Kinda reminds me of something that happened with the English version as well.

Note: I know, I know. It's a temporary avatar! The link died to my old avatar so I'm just using this until I come home from Otakon and have time to look for where I put the .PNG of my old avatar in my computer. Was the effort you went through to read this really worth it? Sorry.

It's a shame we'll never get either "Spirit vs Spirit" for Kai nor even the Yamamoto tune, which was decent.

I'm with you. This is a HUGE moment for the series and it was done at least alright with the Yamamoto score. Tacking on either of those Kikuchi pieces just sounded... lame.

Honestly with the limited choices of Kikuchi tracks in Kai replacing my favorite Dragon Ball score to date, I'm liking the Kikuchi score less and less. It's like a slap in the face every time I hear it. Toei didn't even make an effort to save it, and would rather have me being reminded over and over I'll never get the Yamamoto score.

Okay, maybe I'm a bit over the top right now, but I'm incredibly disappointed to this day about the music scandal.

I guess that I'm the only one who likes Kai better with the Kikuchi score.

I actually think the one that uses the the movie 8 piece is pretty decent. It's a bit weak though, and I don't know why the Kikuchi version of Kai uses that track so frikkin' much.

kei17's seems to be better though, as the choice captures Gohan's rage overcoming him due to being a more powerful piece.

With me, it varies from episode to episode. I don't object to Kai with Kikuchi- I prefer his music to Yamamoto's overall- but the placement can be troublesome.

What they should have done was place the score just like they did in DBZ or as much that was available on CD.
