I know it's a bad comparison, but I compared the footage of Goku and Vegeta fighting to some old Orange Brick caps on my PC and the colors are almost exactly the same. They may be using the same source as those.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

If these are just the DragonBoxes in Blu-Ray, it's gonna make everyone who bought the DragonBoxes look really stupid. I mean, why would you buy them knowing that their is a good chance they might be released on a superior and more modern format? That's like buying the Lord Of The Ring series on VHS back in the day instead of buying it on DVD.

Watch a trailer once in a while. Whether they're basing the sets of DBox footage or not, they're actually remastering them.
So it's not "just the Dragon Boxes", it's FUNimation's touched up digital remaster.

Here is a frame from that clip and the R2 DBox... the colors so seem to be a bit off (although we might see things differently once Funi posts that video somewhere).

We're getting into the old 'blue-sky vs. green sky' argument. While it's been beaten to death, it's an easy way to view the color issues.

Do you have the same scene from the Orange box just to test for color changes?

(of course, the DBox colors may been adjusted a bit too much, that argument has been made before)

If these are good quality I might buy but am currently watching Dragon Box Volume 1 and it seems fine to me. I got all Six Volumes currently released and preordered 7th. Will only get these if they later do in box sets.

Someone throw that part from Kai in, too, just for good measure.

Eh, it'd be nice if the BD release looked great. I still think Funimation is going to screw this up somehow.

Personally, I don't have any interest in buying this (especially with the low episode count) as I got my perfect release with the Dragon Boxes. Now maybe if they faithfully redubbed the series with the cast of Kai then I would definitely look into picking these up but alas...

I think I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now, because it's easy to remove the red color-cast:

The colors could also look similar due to it being a camera recording of the screen, as opposed to the actual footage. Of course, it's also highly possible that the colors would be the similar to the season sets as well.

If it's still their old film, it could also end up looking like the UUE footage, depending on the amount of color correction.

It's sad because it's true. There are even videos on YouTube using the US Dragon Boxes streched to widescreen and called HD

And from Kai (which isn't 'pink' either), but the DBox is the sharper image:

I know I should be ashamed of myself, but I'm interested in the Blu-rays if they turned out to be good, however in bigger sets. Just really crazy, especially since I'm still working on Kai and the last Dragon Box. I wonder if it has next episode previews, though and alternate angles.

Sorry to pop up out of nowhere. I just found my account name. Anyways don't be. It shows that your a dedicated dbz fan. I'm on my 6th dragon box and i preordered 7 and i was gonna call it a day with the dbz series for DVD. but from what I've seen with these new blu ray dvds, it will be hard to pass up. however I'm not happy with the episode count and i hope they have a "physical bonus like the season sets."

Absolutely nothing wrong with wanting DBZ on Bluray.

Everyone wants proper DBZ on Bluray, in HD. Absolutely nothing wrong with that and in terms of concept everything is right with it. The main worry is how it's going to be transferred by Funimation which is completely understandable and should be addressed by the fans.

But a beautiful transfer is completely possible and desirable. DBZ can't stay in DVD resolution forever, especially with how fast technology is growing.

Wow. They seem to be actually doing a manual, thorough remaster. Let's just hope they don't take shortcuts in the future. Moreover, I agree with everyone who's said that FUNimation are using the Dragon Box masters. They're better and they still have the rights to them, but they also might not be contractually allowed to alter the footage. In any case, if FUNimation manage to be as meticulous as they say they will, right till the very end of the series, then this will perphaps be the best DBZ release ever.

Thats not exactly true. Yes, they did agree to not alter the dbox footage, however, they meant that fir the dragon boxes. They are using dragon box footage and remastering it, but they didn't agree to it for other releases.

The Blu-rays can't be using the Dragon Boxes because the Dragon Box footage only exists in 480p. It was digitally remastered, which means whatever resolution they remastered it in at the time is as good as it will ever get. There's no film master of the Dragon Boxes they can go back to and scan in at a higher resolution. Considering the remaster was done in 2002 or 2003 it was most likely done in 480p. The only way it could be Dragon Box footage but 1080p would be if they upscaled it, and they've made it pretty clear this isn't just an upscale.

(They could rescan the raw filmstock and remaster it again though, but that would require remastering from scratch, and that's what FUNi seems to be doing with their own filmstock, which is multi-generational and nowhere near the quality of Toei's.)

It can't be the Dragon Boxes because there's extensive film damage.

Some possibilities I can think of is that these are either the same old masters FUNi's had since forever, new masters they received from Toei, or they are direct copies of the original film used to make the Dragon Boxes and Kai, which may be least likely.

Leaving the remastering to Funimation is like leaving the health inspections to McDonald's.

In b4 somebody says "leaving animating to Toei is even worse".

The master for the Dragonboxes, the film, is not "480 p", though.
