Oh, and I think that despite getting flung that far Bardock isn't lying on the ground there. It looks to me like there's a 'beam' of sorts coming from the impact area, so I think he immediately darted upward from the impact. I could be wrong though.

I doubt it. Some of the translators one of the moderators on the DB Multiverse site were also extremely surprised by the next page. We've had some many "OMG NEW TRANSFORMATION" pages in this manga so far that I don't think Bardock randomly going SSjin 2 would even be such a big deal anymore.
