A quick question about Funimation's dub.

Post by dbgtFO » Thu Aug 04, 2011 5:48 pm

Okay, I just want to know, is the following really how Funimation dubbed that scene?

It just seems so ridiculous.

Eyyyep... That's really the dub.

Oh dear  I guess my problem with it is that it's like something out of a WeelyTubeShow episode.
Well thanks for answering. :)

I've mistaken tons of random clips from this dub as fan parodies before. Welcome to the club, I guess.

Scenes like these are why I treat the FUNi dub as little more than an officially licensed parody.

Season 3's pretty bad

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

The worst part is . . . they redubbed that bit and had a chance to rid themselves of that embarassing dialog . . . yet they kept that shit in?!

Season 3 was quite the rush job with bad dialogue choices, but if you think about it, was understandable. It was the make it-or break it for Funimation so they just did things quickly with added humor, that usually wasn't funny, to hopefully make the show a success. Not so good but remember if not for their work on DBZ, we wouldn't have the great stuff like Ouran, OP, YYH, and Funimation might not be as big as they are.

Sometimes some companies don't feel like fixing or re-doing things. For example, watch this vid from a classic tv series at about 28 sec.:

As the actor is still alive they could have redone that with the modulation so Soundwave sounds like he did at the beginning of that clip, but they never did.

Hindsight is 20/20 so it's easy to say that DBZ would've sold regardless, but Funi didn't know this at that point so even though their decisions with Season 3 were definitely pretty bad, they were at least understandable at the time, especially considering how most anime dubs were like back then.

In the first version, Sabat's Vegeta sounds like Sabat's Jheese.

It's stuff like this that makes me appreciate Kai's dub warts and all.

Can we get a Kai dub clip of that scene just to compare?

What's the deal with the redubbed Freeza dialogue? I know they had redone Vegeta for the season sets, but did they do that around the time of the UUE or what?

I think that at the time of the Season Sets' release, they decided to redub all of Linda Young's dialogue up to Freeza's transformation into his fourth form, as well as Vegeta's dialogue until the android arc and uh... some other characters I don't remember off-hand, for the sake of consistency. Annoyingly enough, they could've easily fixed THAT line since nobody else was involved in that conversation, yet didn't :?

Holy crap...that's terrible! That sounds like something you'd hear in DBZ abridged if Team FourStar was totally wasted while recording an episode. Parody doesn't even describe it...

Am I the only one that found that entire sequence awkwardly animated? Even the Kai version seemed rushed.

But otherwise, dub Freeza. Dub Freeza.

Like I mentioned it might've been like the Soundwave example I linked above and they didn't feel like doing so.

What, all this talk of goofy dubisms, and no one included this?

And the music wasn't even originally supposed to be that fruity. Evan Jones, the mixing engineer, was responsible for that. Apparently, he thought it would be a riot :x !
